Lucknow, Feb 22 : The Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) has arrested two alleged Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) terrorists from Deoband in Saharanpur district, Director General of Police O P Singh said on Friday.

The two men arrested are Shahnawaz Ahmad Teli from Kulgam and Aquib Ahmad Malik from Pulwama in Jammu and Kashmir. 

Both were involved in recruiting members for the JeM, the DGP told reporters. 

Asked whether the two men were involved in the February 14 Pulwama terror attack, Singh said, "It's difficult to tell whether they came here before the Pulwama attack or after that. The probe is on.

Diphu (Assam), Feb 22 :  A hardcore militant of People's Democratic Council of Karbi-Longri (PDCK) was apprehended Friday along with arms and ammunition in Karbi Anglong district of central Assam, police said.

The operation was jointly carried out by the Army and police at Borlangfer area of the district.

Based on specific inputs about movement of PDCK extremists in Borlangfer area, a joint team comprising of Army and Police launched an operation and apprehended the militant identified as Welson Terang alias Mongwe Terang of Bokaram Tokbi gaon, under Dolamara police station, said Karbi Anglong district Superintendent of Police Gaurav Upadhyay.

A .22 pistol with magazine and 6 live rounds of ammunition were recovered from his possession, Upadhyay said.

Welson was earlier a hardcore member of Karbi People's Liberation Tigers (KPLT) and involved in extortion, kidnappings, etc., The SP said, adding, he was arrested in 2013 and 2015.

After getting released on bail, Welson joined PDCK and was involved in extortion and recruitment of youths into the extremist outfit, Upadhyay said.

In July last year, Welson along with his associates, had mounted an attack on a police team at Bokaram Tokbi gaon, he said.                      [Agencies]

Peshawar, Jan 16 :  Security forces in Pakistan have gunned down four militants, including a top Taliban commander who masterminded the last year's powerful bomb blast in the restive Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in which at least 31 people including three Sikhs were killed.

Those killed in the exchange of fire include Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) commander Islam and Mohibullah who were involved in various terror activities, officials said.

A huge cache of arms and ammunition was also recovered from their possession.

Intelligence agencies raided a house near Qazi pump area where the militants were believed to be hiding. The owner of the house was also killed in the firing between the militants and security forces.

In November, 31 people including three Sikhs were killed and over 40 others injured in the bomb blast at the Friday Market (Juma Bazar) near an imambargah, a Shia religious place, in Orakzai tribal district's Kalaya area, bordering Afghanistan.

Prime Minister Imran Khan had strongly condemned the terrorist attack.

Orakzai, a terror hotbed, is one of the seven semi-autonomous tribal regions of Pakistan which has a porus border with Afghanistan.                                                 PTI

Srinagar, Oct 11 : Two Hizbul Mujahideen militants, including PhD scholar-turned-terrorist Manan Bashir Wani, were killed Thursday during an encounter with security forces at Handwara in frontier district of north Kashmir, officials said.

The encounter broke out in the early hours at Satgund in Handwara following a specific intelligence about presence of Wani, 27, along with two others, they said.

Giving details emerging from the encounter site, which ended, police and other security forces were fired upon by holed up militants resulting in exchange of fire which continued till 11 AM.

Police was also making repeated announcements on public address system appealing to the militants to surrender, the officials said.

There was a lull in firing at around 9 AM, prompting the police to initiate search operation at the encounter site, but the same had to be suspended after firing resumed after 15 minutes, the officials said.

Wani, who was enrolled as a PhD scholar with the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), joined militant ranks in January this year.   PTI

Srinagar, Oct 5: Militants Friday shot dead two National Conference workers and injured an office bearer by firing at them from close range in the city, three days ahead of the first phase of elections for urban local bodies in Kashmir, police said.

The gunmen fired at the trio at Karfali Mohalla, resulting in injuries to all three, a police official said.

The injured persons were rushed to nearby SMHS Hospital but two of them succumbed, the official said.

The deceased have been identified as Mushtaq Ahmad Wani and Nazir Ahmad Bhat. While both were affiliated to the National Conference, Bhat was working as public relations officer of MLA Habbakadal Shamima Firdous.

The injured person has been identified as Shakeel Ahmad Ganaie, a Halqa president for National Conference. Gram panchayats are known as Halqa in Kashmir.

Security forces have launched an operation to track down militants, the official said.

The killings come just three days ahead of polling for first phase of elections to urban local bodies in the state.

National Conference and PDP have boycotted the polls on the grounds that state's special status under Article 35-A of the Constitution is under threat due to the legal challenge to this provision in the Supreme Court. (PTI)

Srinagar, Oct 5: Militants Friday shot dead two persons and injured another by firing at them from a close range in Karfali Mohalla area of the city, two days ahead of polling for first phase of elections for urban local bodies in Kashmir, police said.

The gunmen fired at three persons at Karfali Mohalla, resulting in the death of two of them and injuries to another, a police official said.

Srinagar, Sept 27: An unidentified militant and a soldier were killed in a gunbattle in Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday, the army said.

Security forces launched a cordon and search operation in Qazigund area of Anantnag district after receiving tip-off about presence of militants there, an army official said.

The search operation turned into an encounter when the insurgents opened fire on the security forces, he said.

One militant has been killed so far while a soldier laid down his life fighting the ultras, the official said.

He said the operation was in progress when reports last came in.

In another operation, in Panzan area of Budgam district, security forces are locked in a gunbattle with militants hiding in the village, the official said, adding that there were no reports of casualties so far in this operation. (PTI)

Srinagar, Sep 15: Three militants were killed Saturday in an encounter with the security forces in Kulgam district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said.

Three militants have been killed in the operation at Chowgam in Kulgam district of south Kashmir, a police official said.

He said a total of five militants were believed to be engaged in the encounter.

Acting on specific information about the presence of militants in Chowgam, the security forces launched a cordon and search operation in the area this morning.

Amid the ongoing search operation, the militants opened fire on the security forces, prompting them to retaliate and kill three of the outlaws, the official said, adding the operation is continuing.

Meanwhile, train services have been suspended in the valley due to apprehensions of law and order problems.

The train services between Baramulla-Qazigund have been suspended, the official said. (PTI)

Srinagar, Sep 13: Two militants were Thursday killed in an encounter with security forces in Sopore area of Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said.

Security forces launched a cordon and search operation in Chinkipora near Arampora area of Sopore township in the north Kashmir district this morning after receiving intelligence input about presence of militants in the area.

The search operation turned into an encounter after the hiding militants fired upon the forces.

"Two terrorists have been killed in the operation at Chinkipora," an Army official said.

Srinagar, Sep 8: Militants Saturday shot dead a civilian in Sopore township of Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said.

Militants fired upon the civilian in Bomai area of Sopore this afternoon, a police official said.

He said the civilian - Hakim-ur-Rehman, a resident of Reshipora Bomai - received critical bullet injuries in the attack.

The injured was evacuated to the nearby hospital for medical attention where he succumbed to injuries, the official said.

Police have registered a case in this regard and investigation in the instant matter has been initiated, he said. (PTI)

Srinagar, Sep 8: A militant was killed and a policeman injured when a some ultras attacked a police picket in Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir, the police said on Saturday.

Militants attacked a police picket at Achabal late Friday night, a police official said, adding but the attack was successfully repulsed.

In retaliatory action, one militant was killed and his weapon was recovered, he said.

The identity and group affiliation of the slain ultra is yet to be ascertained, he added.

The official said that in the shootout, a policeman sustained injuries and was shifted to a hospital where his condition is stated to be stable. (PTI)

Some arms and ammunition have been recovered from the encounter site at Garol in Kokernag, a police official said.

The identity and group affiliation of the slain ultra is yet to be ascertained, he said.

Srinagar, Aug 17: A woman was shot dead by suspected militants of the Hizbul Mujahideen in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama district today, police said.

Shameema Bano, a resident of Quil, was shot in the Drubgam area of Pulwama, an official said.

He said the woman was rushed to a hospital where doctors declared her dead.

A police spokesman said banned militant outfit Hizbul Mujahideen was behind the killing of the woman. (PTI)

Srinagar, Aug 13: Militants shot dead a civilian after abducting him from his house in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said today.

"Terrorists in Murran area of Pulwama last night barged inside the house of Gulzar Ahmad Bhat and abducted him," a police official said.

The official said police recovered Bhat's bullet-riddled body from a nearby field.

"Police have registered a case and initiated investigation, which suggest involvement of local militants Zahoor Thokar and Showkat Dar of the Hizbul Mujahideen outfit," he added. (PTI)

Imphal, Jul 31: Two militants were arrested by police from two different places in Manipur, a police officer said today.

Two active cadres of proscribed militant outfit People Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (Progressive) group were arrested by police yesterday, a press release issued by the PRO of Manipur Police said.

One of the militants was arrested from Kwakeithel Heinoukhongnembi Thokchom Leikai area in Imphal West district and other from Arapti Thongkhong area in Imphal East district, the release added. (PTI)

Srinagar, Jul 24: An unidentified militant in Kashmir Valley today surrendered before security forces and returned to his family, the police said.

"With the help of community one more joins his family and shuns the path of violence," Kashmir Zone Police said on Twitter.

However, the details of the surrendered militant have been kept a secret in order to ensure the security of the youth.

More than a dozen militants have laid down their arms in Kashmir since last year when police announced that they will accept offer to surrender of local militants even during ongoing encounters.

Most of these militants have surrendered after appeals by their families to shun the path of violence and return home. (PTI)

Jalalabad, Jul 11: Militants raided a government building in eastern Afghanistan today, officials said, setting off explosions in an ongoing attack.

At least five people have been wounded in the attack in Jalalabad, Nangarhar provincial governor spokesman Attaullah Khogyani told AFP, in the second assault in the city in as many days.

Security forces were battling to clear the militants from the compound, Khogyani said, but it was not clear how many gunmen were inside.

"I can confirm an armed attack on a branch of the education department," Khogyani said.

"Two big explosions have been reported from the site so far." Jalalabad health director Najibullah Kamawal confirmed five wounded had been brought to hospital so far.

A suicide attack in the same city yesterday killed at least 12 people and ignited a nearby petrol station, with witnesses describing screaming victims "swallowed" by flames.

The bomber was targeting Afghan security forces when he blew himself up. Ten civilians were among the dead.

The Islamic State group claimed that attack via its Amaq propaganda agency -- the latest carried out by the extremists in restive Nangarhar province, which borders Pakistan.

IS has claimed a series of high-casualty suicide bomb attacks in the province in recent weeks, as US and Afghan forces continue offensive operations against the group.

While the Taliban is Afghanistan's largest militant group, IS has a relatively small but potent presence, mainly in the north and east of the country.

Today's attack comes a day after President Ashraf Ghani flew to Brussels to attend a NATO summit where he will be hoping to get a greater commitment from members to the nearly 17-year conflict.

It also coincides with the start of a university entrance exam for more than 16,000 students in the city, but it was not clear if the two events were linked.

The attack comes exactly a month after militants raided the education department in Jalalabad.

In that incident a suicide bomber blew himself up at the entrance to the department, triggering a fierce battle between gunmen and security forces.

At least 10 people were wounded after terrified employees jumped out of the windows.

A recent ceasefire between Afghan security forces and the Taliban during the Islamic holiday Eid had raised hopes that an end to hostilities in the war-weary country was possible.

Since then, however, the Taliban has returned to the battlefield and IS, which was not involved in the truce, has continued to carry out deadly attacks.

Srinagar, Jul 10: A security personnel was injured in a gunbattle with militants while three civilians were hurt during clashes with law enforcing agencies near the encounter site in Jammu and Kashmir's Shopian district, police said.

Security forces launched a cordon and search operation in a village in Shopian following information about the presence of militants there, a police official said.

He said the search operation turned into an encounter after the militants opened fire on the security forces, who retaliated.

The official said a jawan was injured in the exchange of fire with the militants.

He said a large number of civilians rushed towards the encounter site at Kundullan and started pelting stones at security personnel.

Three civilians were injured in action by security forces to chase away the protestors, he said.

The encounter as well as the clashes in the outer periphery of the cordoned area were going on when reports last came in, he said. (PTI)

Srinagar, Jun 22 : A policeman injured in a militant attack in Kak Sarai area of the summer capital here last week succumbed to injuries today, police said.

 Head Constable Habib-ul-lah was the lone bread-earner of his family and is survived by two sons and three daughters - one of them aged 21 years whose marriage was scheduled next week, the other two are studying in class 10 and class 6- besides wife and aged parents.

 Head Constable Habib-ul-lah, who was injured after militants opened fire on a security forces party which was carrying out random vehicle checking at Kak Sarai area of the city on June 15, succumbed to injuries at SKIMS Hospital here this morning, a police spokesman said.

He said a wreath laying ceremony was held today at District Police Lines Srinagar to pay homage to the slain cop.

Civil and police officers led by Director General of Police S P Vaid laid floral wreaths on the mortal remains and paid rich tributes to the policeman who made supreme sacrifice in the line of duty, the spokesman said.

He said officials from the civil administration and other security agencies were present. PTI

"Encounter at Khiram Srigufara on, two terrorists down, firing still continues. Unfortunate we lost one colleague of J&K Police," Director General of Police (DGP) S P Vaid wrote on Twitter
In another tweet, the DGP said the militants were reportedly from the ISJK
"Terrorists reportedly affiliated to ISJK," Vaid said
