Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath today congratulated NDA candidate Ram Nath Kovind on being elected as the next President of India.


Lucknow, Jul 20 :  Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath today congratulated NDA candidate Ram Nath Kovind on being elected as the next President of India. Terming the election as a moment of pride and honor, the Chief Minister said under the guidance of Mr Kovind, the honor of the country would be enhanced further. In the congratulatory message, the CM said that it was due to the positive thinking of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP Parliamentary Board that the Nation has got such a fine person as President, one who has an impeccable record in a long public life. Mr Kovind comes from a rural background and his deep roots there will enhance the standing of the rural people and Dalit community, the CM said. Mr Adityanath also pointed out that Mr Kovind has always worked for the welfare of the poor, Dalits and the marginalized sections of the society and his election would further develop the social awareness in the country. Meanwhile UP BJP General Secretary Vijay Bahadur Pathak also congratulated Mr Kovind for becoming the first President of the country from UP. "We thank PM Narendra Modi and BJP president Amit Shah for giving an opportunity to a person from Dalit community of the state to assume the highest post if the country", he said. Mr Pathak said the election of Mr Kovind was a great honour for the state and also for the Dalit community and Other backward Class. UNI

On his victory, Mr Kovind, who became the second Dalit president and first from the country's most populated state Uttar Pradesh, said, "My election victory is a tribute to greatness of Indian democracy." Mr Kovind, who was the Governor of Bihar before his nomination for election to the top Constitutional post, would take over charge from incumbent Pranab Mukherjee in Rashtrapati Bhawan on July 25. President Mukherjee congratulating Mr Kovind tweeted,"Heartiest congratulations and best wishes to Mr Ram Nath Kovind on being elected as the 14th President of India." Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a series of tweets said he was 'gladdened by the extensive support' garnered by Mr Kovind and said the NDA nominee got support of the elected members from across the states. The Prime Minister also posted a photograph of him standing aside Mr Kovind and his wife and also wrote in the microblogging site: '....20 years ago and the present…always been a privilege to know you, President-Elect.' "I am sure Shri Ram Nath Kovind ji will distinguish himself as an exceptional President of our nation,' he said. "The election of Shri Ram Nath Kovind ji is a victory for the poor, downtrodden & marginalised and their aspirations,' BJP national supremo Amit Shah said. Talking to reporters after the declaration of results for the Presidential polls, Ms Kumar said,'I want to make it very clear that today on 20th July 2017 my battle for ideology doesn't end. It will continue. My fight for Secularism, the oppressed and the marginalised continues.' Mr Kovind secured 2,930 votes of the value of 7.02 lakh as against 3.67 lakh of Ms Kumar. Secretary General of the Lok Sabha, who is the returning officer for the Presidential poll, announced here declaring Mr Kovind as elected after the counting of votes, which began this morning and was completed around 1600 hrs. In Parliament, Mr Kovind was supported by 722 MPs, and Ms Kumar secured the vote of 225 MPs, while 21 votes of MPs were found invalid. The polls for the highest office of the country was held on July 17. UNI

New Delhi, Jul 20 : BJP-led NDA nominee Ram Nath Kovind today defeated joint Opposition candidate Meira Kumar by a huge margin of 3.34 lakh votes. Mr Kovind secured 2930 votes of the value of 7.02 lakh as against 3.67 lakh of Ms Kumar, Secretary General of the Lok Sabha, who is the returning officer for the Presidential poll, announced here today declaring Mr Kovind as elected. The NDA candidate got 65.65 per cent of total vote share, as against Ms Kumar's 34.35. The polls for the highest office of the country had been held on July 17. Mr Kovind would be the 14th President of the country. He will take over from incumbent Pranab Mukherjee on July 25.  UNI 

The counting of votes for the Presidential election will be held today. According to official sources,the counting will begin at 1100 hrs.

The Secretary General of Lok Sabha, Anoop Mishra, who is the Returning Officer for Presidential polls, has said that the votes will be counted on four separate tables and there would be eight rounds of counting. Sources also said, first, the ballot box of Parliament House will be opened, and then, the ballot papers received from states will be counted in alphabetical order. Out of 771 Members of Parliament of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, 768 cast their votes while of 4100 state legislators, 4075 excercised their right to elect country's first citizen. As many as 714 MPs voted in Parliament premises while the rest voted in respective state Assembly premises. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the first to cast his vote in Parliament premises. The term of incumbent President Pranab Mukherjee, a veteran Parliamentarian, comes to an end on July 24. Parliament has organised a farewell function for Mr Mukherjee on July 23, Sunday, Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan has announced in the House earlier this week. A booklet signed by all Members of Parliament will be handed over to Mr Mukherjee on the occasion. This year's presidential election had generated much excitement as NDA candidate Ram Nath Kovind, a former Bihar Governor, was pitted against united opposition nominee and former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar. There have been also talks about "cross voting" in this year's election. Significantly, the turnout in voting was one of the largest - about 99 per cent. Also notably, a number of MPs this year voted in their respective state capitals. As many as 42 MPs from West Bengal voted in the premises of West Bengal Assembly in Kolkata. The state's ruling party Trinamool Congress has asserted that there would not be any cross voting from their party camp. The election for Vice President's post will be held on August 5. While BJP-led NDA dispensation has fielded senior BJP leader M Venkaiah Naidu, the former West Bengal Governor and a grandson of Mahatma Gandhi - Gopalkrishna Gandhi is the candidate on behalf of the opposition parties. SRINAGAR, JULY 17: The polling for election to the office of President of India started here today at 10 am under the supervision of Chief Electoral Officer, Jammu and Kashmir, Mr Shaleen Kabra, and Election Observers from Election Commission of India.
Assistant Returning Officers and Authorized Agents of the contesting Presidential election candidates were also present during the election process.
Polling was conducted smoothly throughout the day and till the time of the conclusion of polling 86 MLAs out of the total 87cast their votes.
 Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal today said MLAs should listen to their conscience while casting votes in the Presidential poll, which is underway in the Delhi Assembly, state Assemblies and Parliament. Mr Kejriwal, who reached the Assembly holding an umbrella due to rain, exercised his right in room number 35 of the Delhi Assembly, where voting is taking place to elect the next President.

Mr Kejriwal, who reached the Assembly holding an umbrella due to rain, exercised his right in room number 35 of the Delhi Assembly, where voting is taking place to elect the next President. "MLAs should use their conscience in casting votes. In Democracy, one who has the number wins. We are supporting Meira Kumar (Opposition's candidate)," he told reporters after casting his vote. Mr Kejriwal, his Cabinet Colleague Manish Sisodia, Leader of the Opposition Vijendra Gupta and rebel AAP MLA Kapil Mishra were among the early voters. In first two hours, 15 out of 69 MLAs, exercised their right. Addressing reporters, Mr Sisodia said, "Who wins the Presidential election, this is not a question, it is important that the country wins." Rebel AAP MLA Kapil Mishra, who was among the early voters, said, "my vote went to the one (candidate) who is all set to become the next President." After casting his vote, BJP MLA Om Prakash Sharma expressed hope that NDA's Presidential candidate Ram Nath Kovind will win with a huge margin. Claiming that at least 10-12 AAP MLAs are not happy with Arvind Kejriwal, Mr Sharma hoped that they would vote for Mr Kovind. In a tweet later, Mr Gupta said,''I voted for Mr Ram Nath Kovind ji in Presidential poll in DLA. It was proud moment to serve as a polling agent for the winning candidate.'' The ruling Aam Aadmi Party declared its support for the Opposition’s candidate, Meira Kumar in the election. Seventeen Opposition parties have fielded Ms Kumar as their joint candidate in the Presidential election against NDA nominee Ram Nath Kovind. Both of them are Dalits. As many as 32 polling stations including one in Parliament and 31 in State Assemblies have been created for the polling which began at 1000 hrs and will continue till 1700 hrs. UNI

Raipur, July 17 :  Barring expelled Congress legislator Amit Jogi, all 90 members of the Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly -- including Chief Minister Raman Singh -- exercised their franchise till 1400 hrs to elect the country's 14th President. Mr Jogi, son of former Chief Minister and Chhattisgarh Janata Congress founder Ajit Jogi, is expected to cast his vote in the Chhattisgarh House this afternoon after his return from Bilaspur. Voting commenced at 1000 hours in the Assembly Committee Room No 2 amid tight security bandobast. Earlier in the day, independent legislator Vimal Chopra was prevented from exercising his franchise by the polling officials for wearing a black badge on his kurta in support of the farmers' cause. However, he cast his vote after he covered his body with a jacket. In the 90-member House, the ruling Bhartiya Janata Party has 49 MLAs followed by princiipal opposition Congress 39, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) one and one independent candidate, who has announced his support to NDA's presidential candidate Ram Nath Kovind. The BJP is hopeful of getting more votes than its actual strength because of the prospect of cross voting in faction ridden Congress party. UNI

NDA nominee Ram Nath Kovind, a former Rajya Sabha member from UP and an ex-Bihar Governor, is pitted against united Opposition's Meira Kumar, a former diplomat turned senior politician. In Lucknow, amid speculation of cross voting among the Samajwadi Party MLAs, UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath was among the first to vote. Security measures have been enhanced in the Assembly after explosives were recovered inside the House on July 12. Yogi Adityanath said it would be an honour for the NDA to give country 'first President' from UP. Mr Adityanath is an MP from Gorakhpur and is yet to get membership of any Houses in the state. The entire voting process in Lucknow has generated excitement after rebel SP leader Shivpal Singh Yadav said that some party MLAs could vote for BJP nominee Mr Kovind. In West Bengal assembly premises in Kolkata, a Congress MLA felt sick after casting his vote. The voting in West Bengal for presidential polls is witnessing an unusual political unity as Trinamool Congress, the Left and the Congress are expected to vote for opposition candidate Ms Meira Kumar. Though NDA’s presidential pick Mr Kovind has massive support from other parts of the country, in the 294-member Bengal Assembly and among its 42 Lok Sabha members, the presence of BJP is weak. However, Mr Kovind is likely to get support from six legislators in the Assembly which includes three from the BJP and the other three from its political ally Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM). In Lok Sabha, BJP has two members from West Bengal - S S Ahluwalia (Darjeeling) and Babul Supriyo (Asansol). Actress-turned-politician Roopa Ganguly, a key BJP leader in Bengal, is a nominated member to the Rajya Sabha. In Patna, voting for presidential election began at the state Assembly`s library at 1000 hours sharp. BJP MLA Sanjay Saraogi was the first legislator to cast his vote. MLA Rajballabh Yadav, who is presently lodged in Biharsharif jail is also likely to cast his vote with permission from court. Similar reports of voting for President's elections have come from other states also. Telangana Chief Minister and TRS leader K Chandrasekhar Rao and state Assembly Speaker Madhusudhan Chary were among the first to cast their votes in the polling to elect the country's next President. In Bangaluru, polling began for Presidential election in Karnataka being conducted at Vidhana Soudha here, where 224 members of the Legislative Assembly and one Lok Sabha member will be exercising their franchise. As many as 233 elected members of the Rajya Sabha, 543 members from the Lok Sabha and 4,120 MLAs from the state Assemblies comprise the electors. The electoral college has a vote value of 10.98 lakh and comprises 4,896 electors - elected members of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha and elected members of legislative assemblies of states and union territories. According to the Election Commission, since the technology for proportional election and single transferable vote is yet to be developed in the electronic voting machines, the presidential election is taking place through ballot papers. For marking the votes, the Election Commission is providing special pens to the electors in the polling booth along with the ballot paper. “Only these pens can be used for marking the votes. The use of any other pen would render the ballot invalid.” Lok Sabha Secretary General has been appointed returning officer for the poll. The counting of votes will take place from 1100 hours on July 20. Incumbent President Pranab Mukherjee’s term expires on July 24 and a new President has to take over on July 25. UNI
