Raipur, Feb 21 :  A CRPF commando was Thursday injured in an encounter with Naxals in Sukma district of Chhattisgarh, officials said.

They said the special jungle warfare battalion of the force, CoBRA, and the state police were out for an operation in the Badelanka-Chintalnar axis of the district in south Bastar when two encounters took place with the Maoists.

"A CoBRA constable has sustained a bullet injury during the operation and he is being evacuated. More details are awaited," a senior official said.

The jawan belongs to the 201st battalion of the Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA), he said.                [Agencies]

Raipur, Jan 16 :  A group of Naxals allegedly torched a bus in Kasoli village in Dantewada district of Chhattisgarh on Wednesday, after asking passengers to alight, police said.

Three Naxals were arrested in connection with the incident, police said.

Talking to PTI, Dantewada Superintendent of Police Abhishek Pallav said the incident took place in Geedam tehsil in the district in the morning.

"The bus carrying 14 passengers left for Chhindnar from Geedam this morning. When it reached Kasoli village, some armed Naxals waylaid it and asked the passengers, its driver and conductor to get down. They later set the vehicle on fire," he said.

They also thrashed the passengers, driver and conductor and snatched their mobile phones. The cadres escaped from the spot soon after, Pallav said.

After being alerted, a police team rushed to the spot and managed to track down the Naxals based on the location of the mobile phones robbed by them. Police chased the Naxals till Korgaon jungle area under Barsoor police station limits.

When the police team reached the Korgaon forest area, the ultras opened fire on them. However, police opened a retaliatory firing and arrested three Naxals.

Police have recovered one of the total 16 mobile phones robbed by the Naxals.

Chhattisgarh Supervisor Mallikarjun Kharge of All India Congress Committee told that in the press conference here today, MLA from Patan area and the state Congress Committee president Bhupesh Baghel has elected its leader as its leader. Baghel will be the new Chief Minister of the state. 

The Congress has won a big victory in the state assembly elections. Since then, speculations were being made about the new Chief Minister in the state.After the long meetings, Bhupesh Baghel was finally elected the Chief Minister.

Senior Congress leaders said that AICC Chhattisgarh secretary Chandan Yadav and Arun Uram, state Congress chief Bhupesh Baghel, former Union minister Charandas Mahant Congress and Lok Sabha member of Durg Tamarhdhuj Sahu reached Delhi from Raipur this morning. 

While All India Congress Committee's Chhattisgarh Chairperson PL Punia, Chhattisgarh Supervisor Mallikarjun Kharge, Congress Legislative Party leader TS Sinhdev, reached Raipur later in the afternoon. 

After coming to Raipur, all the leaders participated in the meeting of the Congress Legislature Party in the press conference room of the Communication Department located in Rajiv Bhawan, Raipur, and the name of the new Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh was announced in this meeting.   PTI

Expressing happiness over the polls outcome, the UPA chairperson said it was a "Congress victory over the BJP's negative politics".

A resurgent Congress Tuesday made significant gains in the Assembly elections, dealing a body blow to the BJP in Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan, while emerging as the single largest party in Madhya Pradesh.

Raipur, Dec 12 (PTI) The Congress in Chhattisgarh will hold its legislature party meeting here on Wednesday to decide on the next chief minister of the state.

Congress' Lok Sabha member Tamradhwaj Sahu, who successfully contested the Assembly election from Durg Rural seat, state party chief Bhupesh Baghel and senior leader T S Singhdeo are front-runners for the top post.

The Congress registered a landslide victory in the Chhattisgarh polls, bringing an end to the 15-year rule of the Raman Singh-led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government. It won 68 seats in the 90-member Assembly, while the BJP got only 15 seats.

"The Congress Legislature Party meeting will be held at 8 pm. All India Congress Committee's observer Mallikarjun Kharge, AICC in-charge for the state P L Punia and other senior leaders will be present there," state party unit's general secretary Shailesh Nitin Trivedi told PTI.

The chief minister is likely to be announced after the meeting.

Former chief minister Ajit Jogi-led Janata Congress Chhattisgarh (J) won five seats and his ally Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) bagged two seats.

A party needs to win 46 seats to form government in the state.

The Congress got 43 per cent of the total votes polled in the state, while the BJP got 33 per cent.

The opposition Congress was headed for a massive victory in Chhattisgarh Assembly polls, bagging 40 seats and leading in 28 constituencies of the 90-member house by late Tuesday night.


Raipur, Dec 11 (PTI) The opposition Congress was headed for a massive victory in Chhattisgarh Assembly polls, bagging 40 seats and leading in 28 constituencies of the 90-member house by late Tuesday night.

As per the latest Election Commission data, the BJP, which was in power for 15 years, had won only ten seats and was leading on another five.

The Janata Congress Chhattisgarh (J) of former chief minister Ajit Jogi had won two seats and was leading in three seats. Jogi's ally Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) won one seat and was leading in one.

In an embarrassment to the ruling party, six sitting ministers of the BJP lost and two others were trailing.

Home Minister Ramsevak Paikra was defeated by Congress' Premsai Singh Tekam by 44,105 votes.

Sports and Youth Welfare Minister Bhaiyyalal Rajwade suffered defeat at the hands of Congress' Ambika Singhdeo, who belongs to the erstwhile royal family of Koriya in the state, at Baikunthpur seat by 5,339 votes.

Two prominent ministers from Bastar region, Mahesh Gagda and Kedar Kashyap, also tasted defeat.

Kashyap was defeated by Congress' Chandan Kashyap by a margin of 2,647 votes and Gagda lost to Congress' Vikram Mandavi by 21,584 votes.

However, BJP minister Ajay Chandrakar managed to retain his Kurud seat, defeating independent candidate Neelam Chandrakar by 12,317 votes.

Cooperative Minister Dayaldas Baghel was defeated by Congress' Gurudayal Singh Banjare by 33,200 votes.

Leader of Opposition T S Singhdeo defeated BJP's Anurag Singhdeo by 39,624 votes. Singhdeo had defeated Anurag in the previous two polls, in 2008 and 2013, too.

Congress' Deputy Leader of Opposition Kawasi Lakhma emerged victorious from Konta seat, defeating BJP's Dhaniram Barse by 6,709 votes.

Congress MP from Durg Lok Sabha seat Tamradhwaj Sahu bagged Durg Rural seat, defeating BJP's Jageshwar Sahu by 27,112 votes.

Ajit Jogi won from Marwahi seat, defeating BJP's Archana Porte by 46,462 votes.

Chief Minister Raman Singh was leading in Rajnandgaon seat against his nearest rival Karuna Shukla of Congress.

Two ministers in BJP government, Rajesh Munat (Raipur City West constituency) and Amar Agrawal (Bilaspur), were trailing.

Besides, state Assembly speaker Gaurishankar Agrawal was trailing.

State BJP chief Dharamlal Kaushik and state Congress president Bhupesh Baghel were leading from Bilha and Patan seats, respectively.

The voting was held in two phases on November 12 and 20.

After it became clear that the Congress was heading for a massive victory, Chief Minister Raman Singh submitted his resignation to the governor.

Raman Singh told reporters he accepted responsibility for the loss, refusing to pass the buck to the BJP's national leadership.

"The election was solely contested on state agenda and it is not related to Delhi. We will sit with the party workers and analyse the defeat in detail.

"This will not reflect on the Lok Sabha elections scheduled in 2019," he said.

In the 2013 Assembly polls, the BJP had won 49 seats, the Congress 39, while one seat each was bagged by the BSP and an independent.

Bhubaneswar, Dec 12 (PTI) Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has expressed hope that the Mahanadi water dispute with Chhattisgarh would be resolved soon after the change of government in the neighbouring state.

The Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) on Tuesday also said that there could be some relief in store for the state on the matter.

Replying to a question on the Mahanadi water dispute with Chhattisgarh on Tuesday, BJD president Patnaik said, "We hope of finding a resolution soon." 

Chhattisgarh has been accused of constructing projects on the upstream of Mahanadi river and blocking the flow of water down stream to Odisha.

The Congress has all along stood by Odisha in the water dispute.

The matter is now pending before a tribunal. 

The Congress will form the next government in Chhattisgarh, ending the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) 15-year reign in the state.

Ajmer, Oct 6 (PTI) In a scathing attack Saturday on the Congress, Prime Minister Narendra Modi accused the opposition party of practising vote bank politics and dividing people to get into power.

The prime minister made the charge at a rally here just ahead of the announcement of assembly election dates for Rajasthan and four other states in November and December.

He asked people not to let the Congress get into power again.

Modi said vote bank politics is not limited to elections now.

Political parties which do vote bank politics divide the bureaucracy when they are in power and this badly affects governance, he said.

They allocate the budget as per vote bank politics and therefore overall development does not happen, he said at the meeting which marked the end of Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje's state-wide political `yatra'.

The Congress has established this tradition in the past 60 years, Modi said.

"With great difficulty, the country has picked the right direction now after 60 years. Don't give them another chance again, he said.

He said the Congress leaders' high command is a family and they can do politics only be revering it.

He accused the party low-level politics.

The Congress leaders were questioning the surgical strikes by the Army across the Line of Control two years ago and insulting soldiers, he said.

They should be ashamed of indulging in such politics, Modi said.

The rally marked the end of Raje's Rajasthan Gaurav Yatra', an outreach exercise by the Bharatiya Janata Party.

The prime minister's rally ended shortly before the Election Commission's press conference in Delhi announcing the polling dates for Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Mizoram and Telangana.

Rajasthan will go to the polls on December 7. Counting will take place in all five states on December 11, the EC announced.

Raipur, Sep 21: The Congress in Chhattisgarh has hit out at Mayawati-led BSP for allying with former chief minister Ajit Jogi's party for the upcoming state assembly election and claimed the pre-poll tie-up has the support of the ruling BJP.

The main opposition party was hoping for an alliance with the Bahujan Samaj Party to take on the BJP in upcoming polls.

It said the BSP has allied with Jogi, an ex-Congressman, as it was facing heat from central government agencies.

The Congress said the alliance between the BSP and Jogi's Janta Congress Chhattisgarh (JCC) has the support of the BJP, which is ruling the state since 2003.

The alliance between the BSP and the JCC was announced in Lucknow Thursday by Mayawati, who said Jogi will be its chief ministerial candidate. According to her, the BSP will contest 35 seats and the JCC 55 in the 90-member House.

"Pressure from the Central Bureau of Investigation and the Enforcement Directorate on the BSP has led to the creation of this alliance.

"This alliance had been formed with the BJP's support and the people of the state had an understanding of it," state Congress chief Bhupesh Baghel said Thursday.

He claimed the BSP had been fielding candidates on the direction of the BJP in all elections in the state so far.

"In the coming polls too, the BSP will field candidates as per the ruling party's choice. This time the party has been exposed by supporting Jogi who has acted as a 'B' team of the BJP," Baghel said.

On the other hand, the BJP said it sees no threat from the BSP-JCC tie-up and is hopeful that the alliance will benefit it.

"Hopes of the Congress were dashed as it had been trying for an alliance with the BSP. The political scenario emerging after the alliance between the BSP and the JCC reflects that the state will see a triangular fight in the coming election," state BJP president Dharamlal Kaushik said.

"However, the BJP is not at all worried as it (BSP-JCC tie-up) will benefit the party and it will storm back to power for a fourth consecutive term," Kaushik said.

The BJP had been working on a mission to win 65 of the 90 assembly seats this time and it will achieve its goal, Kaushik said.

Political observers said the alliance has come as a jolt to the Congress, which was hoping to end the long reign of the BJP in the state.

The BJP and the Congress have dominated the bipolar political landscape in Chhattisgarh, which came into existence in November 2000, and there has been a very limited impact of smaller parties in elections.

However, the BSP-JCC alliance will make the contest triangular when the elections are held by the year-end.

"The Congress has suffered a setback with the move as it was attempting to take the BSP to his side for the upcoming election in view of the latter's hold among Scheduled Caste population, particularly the Satnami community, in districts like Janjgir-Champa, Raigarh and Bilaspur," veteran journalist Ramesh Nayyar told PTI.

However, the development has made the BJP anxious, Nayyar said.

The BSP-JCC combination will prompt both the national parties to devise strategies to attract Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe voters, who comprise nearly 50 per cent of the population of the state, and Jogi has considerable influence among these sections, he added.

Ajit Jogi's son Amit, a legislator, said only the BSP-JCC alliance is capable of stopping the BJP from coming to power in the state.

"BSP chief Mayawati was well aware of the fact that the Congress is a sinking ship. She knows it is only the JCC which has the potential to snatch power from the ruling BJP," said Amit Jogi, MLA from Marwahi seat.

"The people of the state will get a better alternative this time and very soon a joint programme of both the leaders (Mayawati and Ajit Jogi) will be held in the state," he said.

In the 2013 poll, the BJP had won 49 seats, Congress 39, the BSP 1 and Independent 1. The BJP had secured 41.04 per cent of the total votes polled, the Congress 40.29 per cent and the BSP 4.27 per cent.

New Delhi, Sep 19: Declaring that "dictatorship has become a vocation" in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's regime, Congress chief Rahul Gandhi Wednesday said people in Chhattisgarh will remember the attack on his party's workers in Bilaspur as an act of "political persecution".

Taking to Twitter a day after police beat up protesting Congress workers in the Chhattisgarh town, leaving several injured, the Congress president trained his guns on the BJP-led Raman Singh government in the state and also tagged a video of the incident.

"In Narendra Modi's regime, dictatorship has become a vocation. The cowardly manner in which the fundamental rights of Congress workers in Bilaspur were attacked by the Raman Singh government will be remembered by the people there as political persecution," he said on Twitter in Hindi.

At least seven Congress workers were injured on Tuesday when police beat them with sticks in Chhattisgarh's Bilaspur city after they allegedly threw garbage inside a minister's house.

The opposition party claimed its workers were carrying out a peaceful protest against Urban Administration Minister Amar Agrawal but were brutally beaten up by police.

Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Neeraj Chandrakar claimed Congress workers threw garbage inside the minister's house and also roughed up a policewoman and some male constables, following which a case was registered against them.

The protesters then went to the district Congress office and staged a sit-in, the police officer said.

When police tried to arrest them, Congress workers again got into a scuffle with police so "mild force" was used to arrest the workers against whom the case had been lodged, Chandrakar said.

At least 52 Congress workers were arrested and seven of them sustained injuries in the process, the ASP said. (PTI)

Raipur, Sep 17 : Two persons, including a woman, were killed when an improvised explosive device (IED), suspected to have been laid by naxals, went off in Chhattisgarh's Sukma district, police said Monday.

The incident took place last Friday in Metagudem village, located around 500 km from here, but it came to light on Sunday when some locals informed the police about it, Superintendent of Police Abhishek Meena told PTI.

As per preliminary information, the IED exploded on the village's outskirts, killing two persons on the spot, he said.

The identity of the deceased was yet to be ascertained, he said, adding that a police team has been sent to the village to gather details.

Maoists have many a times planted IEDs to target security forces deployed in the Bastar region.

Such incidents led to deaths of several police personnel, villagers and cattle in the past.

Raipur, Sep 13: The Congress in Chhattisgarh may field local candidates to contest the crucial seats being held by the ruling BJP in the naxal-affected Bastar region, a party leader said Thursday.

The party's victory in all the 12 seats of Bastar, one of the worst Maoist-affected areas of India, will be important to ensure a Congress government in the BJP-ruled state, he said.

Elections for the 90 assembly constituencies in Chhattisgarh are scheduled to be held this year-end.

The Congress is weighing all probable candidature for the 12 seats of Bastar, of which 11 (Bijapur, Dantewara, Konta, Chitrakot, Bastar, Narainpur, Kondagaon, Keshkal, Kanker, Bhanupratappur, Antagarh) are reserved for scheduled tribes and one (Jagdalpur constituency) is unreserved, the party leader said.

The Congress has eight MLAs from the region in the Chhattisgarh Assembly whereas the ruling BJP has four.

"The Congress is not leaving any stone unturned to ensure its victory in Chhattisgarh. Winning all the 12 seats in Bastar will be advantageous for us.

"We are in the process of scanning its candidates for the poll and those with high chances of winning and those with good local connect may be given preference while finalising the names," another senior party leader from the state said.

In an interview to last month, senior Congress leader T S Singh Deo had said that not all sitting legislators may get tickets to contest the upcoming assembly polls in Chhattisgarh.

The Congress is out of power since 2003 and its chief Rahul Gandhi is keen on revival of the party in the state.

Chief Minister Raman Singh has already started a mass-contact program to ensure his victory for the fourth time.

The Congress lost to the BJP in the 2013 elections as it could secure only 39 assembly seats out of the 90.

The ruling BJP got 49 seats and one each was won by the Bahujan Samaj Party and by an Independent candidate. (PTI)

Raipur, Sep 10 : Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari said Monday that Chhattisgarh has immense potential for production of bio-fuel.

Addressing a gathering at Charoda in Durg district of the state, he said use of alternative fuels will cut down our dependence on petrol and diesel.

Gadkari laid foundation stones of or dedicated total of eight construction works worth Rs 4,251 crore, including four fly-overs between Raipur to Durg Monday.

"Growth rate of the agriculture sector in Chhattisgarh is very good. Production of rice, wheat, pulses and sugarcane is abundant here, but the state can also emerge as a bio-fuel (production) hub," he said.

Bio-fuel produced from jatropha plant in Chhattisgarh was used in the first biofuel-powered flight which took off from Dehradun and landed in Delhi recently, he said.

The state has immense potential for production of bio-fuel which will create job opportunities for farmers, tribals and forest-dwellers and empower them, he said.

A research institute on biotechnology should be set up in the state capital Raipur which can help the state lead in the production of alternative fuels in the country, he said.

Switching to ethanol, methanol, bio-fuel and CNG will cut down dependence on petroleum and reduce the prices of petrol and diesel, he said.

"We are importing petrol and diesel worth Rs 8 lakh crore and prices are increasing. Rupees is falling against dollar. I have been saying for last 15 years that farmers, Adivasi (tribals) and forest-dwellers of the country can produce ethanol, methanol, bio-fuel and can (become rich enough to) fly planes..." the Union minister said.

"We have decided to exempt vehicles including auto-rickshaws, buses, taxis run on alternative fuels like ethanol, biodiesel, CNG, methanol and bio-fuel from permit requirements," he said.

"Our petroleum ministry is setting up five ethanol plants, where the fuel will be produced from paddy straw, wheat straw, sugarcane and municipal waste. (Consequently) Diesel will be available at Rs 50 per litre and petrol at Rs 55," he said.

Saying that he has approved the projects demanded by the Chhattisgarh government, he said, "I am the only minister who has no dearth of money (for his department). I have so far inaugurated works worth Rs 40 lakh crore.

"I have no dearth of money but I ensure that the work is done in a good way. After getting works worth Rs 40 lakh crore executed, I can confidently say that no contractor had to come to the office with bills (to get them passed). All the works which were done were corruption-free and done in a transparent manner," the Union minister said.

Raigarh, Aug 22: A 35-year-old man was trampled to death by a wild elephant in a forest in Raigarh district of Chhattisgarh, a forest official said today.

The deceased, identified as Bhuvan Dhanwar, was attacked by the pachyderm last night near Basajhar village under Chhal forest range, Divisional Forest Officer (Dharamjaigarh forest division) Pranay Mishra said.

Dhanwar, who was from Dhodagaon village in the area, was walking across the forest to reach Kharra, his in-laws' village located near his place, he said.

After being alerted about the incident this morning, a team of forest personnel reached the spot and sent the body for the post-mortem, the DFO said.

The kin of the deceased was given immediaterelief amount of Rs 25,000, while the remaining Rs 3.75 lakh will be given within 15 days, once all the formalities complete, the official added.

The thickly forested northern region of Chhattisgarh, comprising Surguja, Korba, Raigarh, Jashpur and Koriya districts, is notorious for incidents of human-elephant conflict.

The region has witnessed killings of several people and damages to houses and crops by rogueelephantsin the last few years. (PTI)

Raipur, Aug 20: Chhattisgarh has sent 2,500 tonnes of rice for the people of flood-hit Kerala in a special train.

The train, which departed from here yesterday, is likely to reach the southern state in the next three days covering a distance of 2,100 kms, officials said today.

The move comes after Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh announced assistance of Rs 10 crore to Kerala.

The state government has sent 2,500 tonnes of rice, worth about Rs 7.5 crore, through the special train, the officials said, adding that the railways has not charged any money for ferrying the consignment.

The Chhattisgarh government will soon release the remaining Rs 2.5 crore to Kerala, they said.

"We are ready to help Kerala in all possible way. We are also willing to send doctors and a team of self-help groups to help people there," Singh said.

Singh has also spoken to Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan to enquire about the flood situation and offered his government's assistance in any possible way.

Heavy rains in Kerala have so far claimed 216 lives and forced over 7.14 lakh people to take shelter in relief camps. (PTI)

Raipur, Aug 17: Three young men were killed when the motorcycle they were riding on rammed into a divider and then hit a roadside electric pole in Raipur district of Chhattisgarh today, police said.

The mishap took place this morning when the victims had gone for a ride on a motorcycle in the Naya Raipur area, around 25km from here, a local police official told.

The deceased, all students, were identified as Parmanand Sahu, Praveen Garg and Arpit Nath, aged 20-21 years, he said.

As per preliminary information, the three were triple riding the motorcycle at a high speed. The rider lost control over the vehicle following which it skidded.

They were dragged for around 50 meters before hitting the divider and then the electric pole that left them dead on the spot, he said.

Of the deceased, two belonged to Kanker, while the third one hailed from Rajim town in Gariaband district. They were studying in different colleges in Raipur and Bhilai, he said.

After being informed about the accident, a police team reached the spot and shifted the bodies for post-mortem, the official added. (PTI)

Raipur, Aug 11: A 35-year-old man was killed by naxals in Dantewada district of Chhattisgarh, after accusing him of being a police informer, a police official said today.

The deceased, identified as Lokesh Kartam, was attacked by naxals late last night at his house inBade Gudra village under Kuakonda police station limits, the official said.

"As per the preliminary information, a group of armed naxals stormed into Kartam's house and killed him with sharp weapons," Dantewada Additional Superintendent of Police Gorakhnath Baghel told PTI.

Soon after being informed about the incident, a police team was sent to the place this morning and the body was brought to the police station, he said.

"According to the villagers, the ultras claimed that Kartam was working at the behest of police," Baghel said adding that the victim was not associated with the police in any way.

A case has been registered in this connection and a search operation has been launched in the area to trace the ultras, he added.

With this, Dantewada district has witnessed four incidents of attack y Naxals in the last three days.

These attacks are being viewed as Naxals' reaction to the death of their 15 colleagues in an encounter with security forces in neighbouring Sukma district on August 6.

Two days after the encounter, naxals had torched two buses and a truck in Bhansi area of Dantewada after asking occupants of the vehicles to alight. Police had later recovered a human skeleton inside one of the charred buses.

In another incident on the same day, the engine of an empty rake of the Visakhapatnam-Kirandul passenger train derailed after Naxals uprooted railway tracks near Kamaloor railway station in Dantewada.

On August 9, Maoists had torched a JCB machine, engaged in pipeline laying works, in Kuakonda area, while yesterday, they had set ablaze five empty trucks in Bacheli area of the district. (PTI)

Raipur, Aug 7: An officer of the CRPF's elite CoBRA unit was injured today when an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) laid by naxals exploded in Chhattisgarh's Sukma district, police said.

The incident took place near Timilguda village, around 500 km from here, when a team of the Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA) was out on an area domination operation, Sukma Superintendent of Police Abhishek Meena told .

When the patrolling team was on way back to its camp, Assistant Commandant K Ijung inadvertently stepped on the pressure IED connection, triggering the blast, he said.

The assistant commandant, belonging to CoBRA's 201st battalion, received splinter injuries in his abdomen, he said.

Reinforcement was rushed to the spot and the injured officer was shifted to a field hospital of the paramilitary force in Chintalnar, Meena said.

Efforts were on to airlift the injured officer to Raipur, but the bad weather and continuous rainfall in the area were hampering the evacuation operation, another police official said.

The CoBRA is a specialised unit of the Central Reserve Police Force and is proficient in guerrilla tactics and jungle warfare. It is ranked among one most experienced and successful law enforcement units in the country.

Yesterday, 15 Maoists were gunned down in an encounter with security forces in a dense forest in Sukma, police earlier said. (PTI)

Raipur, Jul 28: Three suspected wildlife poachers and traders were arrested and the skin of a leopard and other body parts were seized from them in Chhattisgarh's Mahasamund district, police said today.

Acting on a tip-off, the police arrested the alleged wildlife poachers and traders, identified as Anjan Singh, Mithlesh Bariha and Lalit Dhruv, from Patewa police station limits yesterday, Mahasamund Superintendent of Police Santosh Singh told over the phone.

The police had information that the three, natives of different villages of the district were looking for prospective customers to sell a wild animal's body parts, he said.

A joint team of the Local Crime Branch and police swung into action and a group of personnel, posing as customers, fixed the deal with them at Rs 40,000, he said.

When the trio arrived in Gogal forest in Patewa, about 80km from the state capital Raipur, they were apprehended, Singh said.

The skin of a leopard, its teeth and jaws, bow, arrow and two knives were recovered from their possession, the SP said.

Their interrogation revealed they had allegedly poached the leopard in the Barnawapara wildlife sanctuary located close to Patewa, he said.

The police were yet to ascertain the exact value of the seizure.

A case has been registered in this connection and further investigation is on, Singh said. (PTI)

Raipur, Jul 19: At least seven naxals, including three women, were today gunned down in a fierce encounter with security forces in Chhattigsarh's insurgency-hit Bijapur district, police said.

The skirmish took place at around 6 am in the forest near Timinar and Pusnar villages along the border of Bijapur and Dantewada districts when a joint team of District Reserve Guard (DRG) and Special Task Force (STF) was out on an anti-Maoist operation, state's Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police (anti-naxal operations) Sundarraj P told PTI.

Acting on a tip-off, security forces had launched the operation from Dantewada district in the forest along the border of the two districts, he said.

While they were cordoning off jungles of Timinar and Pusnar villages, located around 450 km away from the state capital Raipur, in Bijapur, the exchange of fire broke out between the two sides, he said.

"After guns fell silent, bodies of seven naxals, including three women, were recovered from the spot," the DIG said.

Besides, two Insas rifles, two .303 rifles, one 12 bore gun and a few muzzle loading guns were also recovered from the spot, he said.

Further details are awaited as the search operation was still underway in the area, he added. (PTI)
