Srinagar, Dec 19: Two militants, including a foreigner, were killed and a soldier was injured in a fierce encounter in south Kashmir's Shopian district on Tuesday, state police chief S P Vaid said here. 
The operation is going on when the reports last came in, Director General of Police (DGP) Vaid said.
Acting on a tip off about the presence of militants, Rashtriya Rifles (RR), Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police and CRPF launched a joint search operation in village Batmuran Shopian in south Kashmir late on Monday night. All exit points were sealed, they said, adding that when the security forces were moving towards a particular area in the village, the militants hiding in a house resorted to indiscriminate firing with automatic weapons.
The operation continued throughout the night, Dr Vaid said, adding that the two militants were killed in the exchange of fire. He said bodies of both the slain militants have been recovered. One of the slain militant is a foreigner and another is a local, he said, adding that there could be one more militant in the area.
A soldier was also injured in the encounter during which a house was also damaged. UNI

Srinagar, Dec 5: A self-styled Divisional Commander (DC) was among three militants of Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) killed in a fierce encounter with security forces which ensued on Monday afternoon when an Army convoy was attacked on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway in Kulgam district.
A militant in an injured condition was also arrested during the encounter, Director General of Police (DGP) Dr S P Vaid said on Tuesday morning.
A soldier was also martyred while two others besides two civilians were injured in the encounter.
Giving details about the encounter, official sources said that an Army convoy on way to Srinagar from Jammu was attacked by militants at Bongam, Kulgam, on the highway Monday afternoon. Three soldiers were injured in the initial attack, they said, adding that the militants later fled away and entered a nearby house.
Security forces immediately cordoned off the entire area to foil any attempt by militants to escape, they said, adding that when militants were asked to surrender, they continued heavy firing from inside the house.
Sources said the house was later blasted after the militants refused to surrender and continued firing with automatic weapons.
Describing the killing of militants a great success, the DGP congratulated security forces involved in the operation.
He said three militants were killed and another was captured alive in an injured condition who was shifted to hospital. This is the third time security forces arrested a militant in an injured condition and admitted him to hospital in Kashmir.
Dr Vaid said the slain militants were identified as Furkan, Abu Maviya, both foreigners, and a local Yawar.
He said Furkan , a Pakistani militant, had taken over as Divisional commander of LeT after the elimination of Ismail. UNI

Srinagar, Dec 1: “Eid-e-Milad”, the observance of birthday of Islamic Prophet Muhammad, was celebrated on Friday with religious fervor and gaiety in the Kashmir valley and Ladakh region.
Governor N N Vohra, Chief Miniser Mehboba Mufti, president and working president of National Conference (NC) Dr Farooq Abdullah, Omar Abdullah, Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) chief G A Mir, religious and separatist leaders have greeted people on the occasion. Director General of Police (DGP) Dr S P Vaid and Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kashmir, Munir Ahmad Khan too have hoped that this auspicious occasion would be the harbinger of peace, prosperity and progress and further strengthen social harmony in the state.
Braving chilly weather lakhs of people, including women and children, joined the night-long in mosques, shrines, Khankhas and other religious places in the Kashmir valley.
The main congregation was organised at Hazratbal shrine, which houses the Holy Relic of Prophet, on the bank of Dal Lake. Despite coldest night at minus 2.9 degree, thousands of people, who had come from different parts of the valley and outside, joined night-long prayers at Hazratbal shrine. Immediately after "Fajr" (morning prayers) devotees had glimpse of Holy Relic of Prophet. The process will continue after every prayers today and tomorrow.
The authorities had made all arrangements, including transport, medical, power and water, for the devotees. The State Road Transport Corporation (SRTC) also operated a good number of vehicles for devotees, particularly from city to Hazratbal. The traffic police had announced traffic plan for reaching Hazratbal from different parts of the valley to avoid any traffic jam. 
Large number of vendors, including those selling eatables, had also set up their stalls near the shrine. A number of government departments had also set up their camps for devotees. 
Similar congregations were also organised at other religious place, including Asar-e-Sharief Shehre Kalashpora, Soura and Kabai Marg.
In a message of greetings, the Governor observed that Islam teaches one the values of brotherhood, simplicity, compassion and morality, all of which need to be vigorously inculcated in today’s trouble torn world. The Governor has prayed for the well-being and happiness of the people of the state.
Ms Mufti has greeted the people of the state on the auspicious occasion.
In her message of felicitation, Ms Mehbooba prayed that the auspicious occasion proves to be a harbinger of harmony, peace, progress and prosperity in the state. “It’s an occasion to seek forgiveness from Almighty Allah and blessings for the entire mankind”, she said.
The Chief Minister said in the present-day world, marred by conflicts and discord, there is a dire need to practice firmly and promote the teachings of holy Prophet of Mercy in which lies the solution to all problems of mankind. Ms Mehbooba has prayed for the well-being and happiness of the people of the state. UNI

UDHAMPUR, NOVEMBER 18: Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh along with Minister for Public Works, Naeem Akhtar and Minister for Industries and Commerce, Chander Parkash Ganga were among those who laid wreath on the mortal remains of slain Sub-Inspector, Imran Tak who was killed by militants in Zakura area of Srinagar on Friday evening.
Dr Singh while paying tributes to the police officer here at DPL Udhampur expressed grief over the killing and extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.
"Imran was a brave and sincere cop who laid his life for securing the lives of others," the Dy CM said, adding that the nation will always remain indebted to him for the supreme sacrifice and devotion to duty.
Recognizing the brave act of Sub-Inspector Imran Tak, DyCM said his name will be recommended for prestigious Shaurya Chakra gallantry medal so that the future generations can take inspiration and follow the path tread by the brave police officers.
MLA Jammu West, Sat Paul Sharma; Chief Secretary, B B Vyas; Principal Secretary Home, Raj Kumar Goyal; DG JKP, Dr. S P Vaid; IGP Jammu, Dr. S D Singh, DIG Udhampur–Reasi range, DC, Ravinder Kumar, SSP, Director SKPA Udhampur, senior officers of civil administration, Police, Army and other paramilitary forces besides prominent citizens were present on the occasion who paid floral tributes to the martyred Sub-Inspector of J&K Police.

Later, the mortal remains of the slain cop were laid to rest at his native place Basantgarh.

SRINAGAR, AUGUST 16: A deputation of members of Faculty of Veterinary Sciences of SKUAST-K met the Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti here today.
The deputation apprised the Chief Minister about the level of veterinary sciences education in Kashmir and the research activities carried at the campus. They suggested measures for livestock development in the State. They also sought upgradation of academic and research activities in their field so that the faculty can contribute more intensely for the development of livestock in Kashmir Valley.
The Chief welcomed the suggestions put forth by the deputation saying that these would be examined for putting to proper execution.
Another deputation of the officers of State Police Service also met Mehbooba Mufti and thanked her for the historic decision of giving them due share in promotion avenues in their organisation. They informed her that this gesture has infused in them a new vigour to work for the welfare of the State.
The Chief Minister asked the Police officers to work with renewed zeal and ensure that convenience to the common masses is ensured at their level.
Director General of Police, Dr. S. P. Vaid and other senior Police officers were also present on the occasion.

SRINAGAR, JUNE 23:  Early today morning, on learning about the gruesome killing of Sh. Mohammad Ayoub Pandith, Dy Supt. of Police, Governor spoke with Dr. S.P. Vaid, Director General of Police, and conveyed his sincere sympathy to the family of the slain officer and to all ranks of the J&K Police. Governor has expressed grave concern over the continuing attacks on personnel of J&K Police. He is convening an emergency meeting with the Chief Minister.
