Calls for collective effort to create mass awareness
SRINAGAR, SEPTEMBER 08: The Principal Secretary to Government, Health and Medical Education Department, Dr Pawan Kotwal, Saturday held a meeting of the State Task Force on Immunization (STFI) and the State Operation Group (SOG) to review the progress and concerns regarding the Measles-Rubella Vaccination Campaign 2018 underway across the State.
Dr Kotwal said the Governor’s administration is keen to see the entire population of 37,72,960 children aged between 9 months and 15 years in the State covered under the immunization programme launched in the State as part of the Government of India’s commitment to the South East Asia Regional Committee resolution of 2013 calling for elimination of Measles and control of Rubella by 2020.
He said the immunization programme is aimed at preventing children from catching these highly infectious and potentially fatal viral diseases. He called on the civil society, religious heads and teachers to help spread awareness among the masses about it and contribute to the larger aim of eradicating these diseases.
The Principal Secretary said the government has roped in several well-known personalities including sporting stars like Irfan Pathan, Parvez Rasool, and Tajamul Islam as ambassadors to create mass awareness about the immunization campaign and importance of administering the vaccination to all eligible children.
The meeting was informed that mobile and special teams have been constituted for vaccination in high-risk and hard-to-reach areas, adding that division and district control rooms have been established in both the divisions to monitor the day-to-day activities to give feedback to the STFI and the SOG.
It was also informed that all PHCs will have Adverse Events Following Immunization (AEFI) centres equipped with treatment kits, evaluation, and resuscitation equipment as per the guidelines of MHFW GoI in order to ensure control and management in the event of adverse events which is highly unlikely.
The vaccination programme is likely to be launched in mid-September. It includes three weeks of intensive vaccination in schools followed by two weeks of outreach and sweeping services. 80 percent of the targeted population is school-going and as such the schools shall receive the maximum attention. Some 6062 trained vaccinators from the Health Department will be involved in administering the vaccination to eligible children at 29,382 schools across the State.
The campaign will be held at schools (government as well as private) including those for the specially-abled children and non-conventional educational institutions like madrassas, darul ulooms and monasteries. It will not include House-To-House (or HTH) vaccination.
Heads of medical colleges, senior professors and doctors, officers from the Health Department, concerned representatives from WHO besides Additional Transport Commissioner Kashmir, Joint Director Information Kashmir, and President J&K Private Schools Association were present in the meeting.

Rajkot, Aug 20: A 63-year-old woman was arrested with cannabis here in Gujarat early this morning, police said.

Acting on a tip-off, the Special Operation Group (SOG) of the police intercepted the woman who was moving in a suspicious manner in the Jungleshwar area, they said.

On searching her, 1.3 kg of cannabis worth Rs 7,380 was found from her possession, the police said, adding the woman was identified as Amina Sunna.

"We have seized the drug and arrested the woman under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act," said SOG police inspector S N Gaddu.

This is the second time in as many days that cannabis was seized in the Saurashtra region of which Rajkot district is a part.

Yesterday, the police had arrested two persons and seized 9.5 kg of cannabis worth of Rs 57,000 from them in the Morbi city of the region.

"The two were coming to Morbi from Rajkot in an auto- rickshaw. We had a tip off that they were carrying cannabis.

We intercepted their vehicle near the Shanala Road area in the Morbi city and recovered the drug from them," said Morbi SOG inspector S N Sati. (PTI)

Srinagar, May 16: Security forces on Wednesday launched a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) in Tral area of south Kashmir district of Pulwama, official sources said.
They said personnel of Rashtriya Rifles (RR), Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police and CRPF launched a joint search operation at Koilshikar, Tral, in Pulwama following a tip off about the presence of militants.
Security forces sealed all exit point and launched the operation, they said, adding that some firing shots were heard in the area.
Additional security forces and state police personnel have been deployed outside the cordoned off area to prevent any demonstrations during the operation which was going on when the reports last came in. UNI

Srinagar, May 12: A Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawan was killed and a civilian injured in an encounter which ensued during a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) against militants in south Kashmir district of Pulwama.
A police spokesman said here Saturday that a joint search operation was launched by 55 Rashtriya Rifles (RR), Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police and 182 and 183 battalion CRPF at village Chinar Bagh Mohalla, Takiya, in Pulwama late last night following a tip-off about the presence of militants. However, when the security forces began searches in the village, militants hiding there opened fire with automatic weapons. Security forces also retaliated ensuing in an encounter.
A CRPF jawan J D Mandeep Kumar of 182 battalion and Bashir Ahmad owner of the house where the militants were hiding, were injured. 
He said that the area was immediately taken into cordon and the searches were intensified. However, militants taking advantage of the darkness fled from the spot. The operation was later called off in the early this morning.
The injured Kumar later succumbed while the condition of Bashir, who was hit in the shoulder, was stable. UNI

Baramulla, May 4: Security forces launched search operations in several areas of this north Kashmir district on a tip-off about the presence of militants on Friday, official sources said.
They said troops of Rashtriya Rifles (RR), Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police and CRPF launched a joint search operation in some parts of old town in Baramulla, following inputs about the presence of militants.
All exit points have been sealed and search operation was going on when the reports last came in. Meanwhile, additional security forces have been deployed in areas adjacent to cordoned off areas, to prevent any demonstration.
Sources said with the first light this morning, security forces resumed CASO in Drangbal area of the town. Security forces had launched a search operation in the area last evening. However, the operation was suspended during the night to resume this morning. Eye-witnesses said drones were also used during the operation. 
However, so far no contact was established with the militants, they said, adding that operation continued in both the places. UNI

Srinagar, Apr 28: Life remained affected for the second day on Saturday due to shutdown in south Kashmir's Shopian district to protest the death of a student during a shootout at Anantnag on Thursday.
Meanwhile, life returned to normal in Tral and adjoining areas in south Kashmir district of Pulwama, where four militants, including Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) operational commander Mufti Yasir, an aide of Masood Azhar, were killed in an encounter with security forces on Tuesday. An Army soldier and a Special Operation Group (SOG) cop of Jammu and Kashmir police were also martyred in the encounter.
Shops and business establishments remained closed and traffic was off the road in Shopian against the killing of Shafiq Shabir Shah. Police said 21-year-old Shah, a student of BA second year, was injured when militants, travelling in a car, opened fire on Thursday afternoon.
Shah was rushed to local hospital from where he was referred to Srinagar. He was declared brought dead in the hospital. Work in government offices and banks was affected due to strike. Educational institutions also remained affected. However, some private vehicles were plying on different routes in the district.
Additional security forces have been deployed to maintain law and order, official sources said.
Meanwhile, business and other activities resumed on Saturday in Tral and adjoining area after remaining affected since Tuesday. Work in government offices and educational institutions also resumed. UNI

Meanwhile, life remained affected for the third day on Friday in some areas in south Kashmir district of Pulwama, where four militants, including Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) operational commander , Mufti Yasir, an aide of Masood Azhar, were killed in an encounter with security forces on Tuesday.

Srinagar, Apr 11: Three security force personnel were injured in a fierce encounter with militants, holed up in a house, in south Kashmir district of Kulgam on Wednesday, official source said.
The encounter was continuing when the reports last came in, they said, adding that further details are awaited.
However, a defence ministry spokesman said details about the encounter are being collected.
Meanwhile, authorities have suspended mobile internet service in Kulgam and Anantnag district as a precautionary measure to prevent spread of rumours.
Sources told that troops of Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police, Rashtriya Rifles (RR) and CRPF launched a joint search operation at Wani Mohalla, Khudwani Wanpoh in Kulgam district in the wee hours of Wednesday. 
However, when the security forces were sealing the area, militants hiding there, opened indiscriminate firing with automatic weapons. Troops also retaliated resulting in fierce encounter. Three security force personnel were injured who have been admitted to Army hospital, they said.
They said two to three militants are holed up in the area.
Additional security forces were immediately rushed and cordon around the area was further tightened to prevent militants to escape.
Further details are awaited, they said, adding that two to three militants are reportedly trapped there.
A police spokesman on official twitter account of J&K police said, “ Cordon and Search operation being carried out at Wani Mohalla #Khudwani, Wanpoh, District Kulgam turns into an encounter. Information is of preliminary nature. Details being collected'.

Koraput, Mar 26: Three women Maoists were killed and another red rebel was seriously injured in a fierce encounter between the security forces and the Maoists inside Dokarighati forest under Narayanpatna police station limit on late night of Sunday.
Police sources said a joint team of Koraput District Voluntary Force (DVF)and the Special Operation Group(SOG) jawans on a specific tip off from intelligence input,launched a combing operation last night.
At least 15 to20 armed Maoists belonging to the Andhra Pradesh-Odisha Special Zonal Committee of the CPI ( Maoist) were camping in the area and when the joint forces approached them, the red rebels opened fire.The security forces also retaliated and in the encounter three women Maoists were killed.
The Maoists in the face of a stiff gun battle from the security forces fled from the scene leaving the bodies of the three female cadres .The security forces later recovered 10 Maoist kits and three rifles besides some other ammunition from the spot .
Sources said one Maoist was also seriously injured in the exchange of fire and the security forces have launched an intensive combing operation in the area after the incident. UNI

Srinagar, Mar 24: Both the militants, who were holed up since last night in a village, were killed by security forces in a fierce encounter in south Kashmir district of Anantnag on Saturday morning, official sources said. 
They said on a tip off about the presence of militants troops of Rashitriya Rifles (RR), Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police and CRPF launched a joint search operation at village Shishtragam, Dooru, in Anantnag district late Friday night.
However, when the area was being sealed militants hiding there opened fire with automatic weapons, they told adding security forces also retaliated ensuing an encounter.
Additional security forces were immediately rushed to the area from nearby camps, sources told adding the entire area has been sealed to foil any attempt by militants to escape. 
With the first light this morning security forces launched a major offensive and killed both the holed up militants.
A police spokesman said the identity of both the militant was being ascertained. Large cache of arms and ammunition were recovered from the slain militants, he said adding there was no collateral damage during the encounter which has now ended.

Srinagar, Mar 22: A search operation was resumed with the first light on Thursday morning in the frontier district of Kupwara, where five foreign militants were killed and equal number of security forces were martyred in the encounter which ensued on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the district administration of Kupwara has ordered closure of Government Degree College (DGC) in the district, as a precautionary measure on Thursday.
Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kashmir S P Pani and other senior police and CRPF officers paid floral tributes to Selection Grade Constable Deepak Thusoo, a resident of Nagrota, Jammu, at District Police Lines (DPL), Srinagar on Thursday. 
There is no fresh information in the Halmatpora woods as security forces are conducting searches, Defence ministry Spokesman Col Rajesh Kalia told on Thursday morning.
He said no fresh contact was established with the militants, since Wednesday.
Three Army soldiers and two personnel of the Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police were martyred and five militants, believed to be foreigners, were also gunned down in the woods, since the eruption of encounter on Tuesday, he said.
The operation was suspended last night due to darkness in the dense forest to avoid any casualty, official sources told, adding that forces have resumed the operation from different directions. However, despite all odds including chilly weather conditions, security forces remained deployed throughout the night.
It is believed that the militants had recently infiltrated into this side from Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (POK), where a large number of trained ultras are waiting to sneak into this side as there was very less snow on the higher reaches this winter. However, security forces guarding the LoC are already on high alert to foil any infiltration attempt.
Giving details about the Halmatpora encounter, a police spokesman said that on a specific information troops of 41 Rashtriya Rifles (RR), 160 Territorial Army (TA), state police, 98 and 162 CRPF launched a joint search operation in Halmatpora forest in Kupwara on Tuesday.
When the security forces were moving deep into forest in a particular area, militants opened indiscriminate firing with automatic weapons. Security forces also retaliated ensuing a fierce encounter, he said, adding that five militants were killed. A large cache of arms and ammunition, including AK rifle and grenades, were recovered. UNI

Srinagar, Mar 21: A policeman was injured on Wednesday after fresh contact was established with militants in the forest area of frontier Kashmir district at Kupwara, where four ultras were reportedly killed on Tuesday.
However, no body has been recovered so far from the forest area.
'The search operation by security forces was suspended last night due to darkness, only to be resumed with the first light this morning in the woods at Halmatpora in Kupwara,' Defence Ministry Spokesperson Colonel Rajesh Kalia told.
A police official said fresh contact was established with militants this morning, adding that one policeman, identified as Javid Ahmad, was injured in the exchange of fire. 
'Ahmad, who received bullet wound in his leg, was evacuated from the area and rushed to a hospital, where his health condition was stated to be stable,' he added.
Col Kalia said security forces have sealed the entire forest area to foil any attempt by the militants to escape.
He said following specific information about the presence of militants in Halmatpora check forests, a joint search operation was launched by the Special Operations Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir Police, Army and CRPF in the area on Tuesday.
However, when security forces were moving towards a particular area in the forest, militants hiding there fired at them with automatic weapons. 'Security forces also retaliated, ensuing in an encounter,' he added.
Four militants were killed on Tuesday in the exchange of fire, he said.
However, a police official of Kupwara, when contacted, said that he can't confirm the killings as no body has been recovered so far from the forest area.
Sources said security forces have also launched a search operation in the adjacent forest areas, including at Gulgam and Awoora, which is connected to Halmathpora forests. UNI

Srinagar, Mar 21: With the first light on Wednesday morning, security forces resumed operation in the forest area of frontier Kashmir district of Kupwara, where four militants were reportedly killed in an encounter.
However, the bodies of the militants have not been recovered so far. 
'The search operation by security forces was suspended on Tuesday night due to darkness only to be resumed with the first light this morning in the woods in Halmatpora in Kupwara,' official sources said.
Despite bad weather, security forces have sealed the entire forest area to foil any attempt by the militants to escape, they said.
Following specific information about presence of militants in Halmatpora check forests, a joint search operation was launched by Special Operations Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir Police, Army and CRPF in the area. 
However, when security forces were moving towards a particular area in the forest, the militants hiding there, fired at them with automatic weapons. Security forces also retaliated, ensuing in an encounter, they said.
Four militants were killed on Tuesday in the exchange of fire, the Defence Ministry spokesperson told.
However, a police official of Kupwara, when contacted, said that he cannot confirm the killings as no body has been recovered so far from the forest area.
The sources said security forces have also launched a search operation in the adjacent forests, including Gulgam and Awoora, which are connected to Halmathpora forest. UNI

Srinagar, Mar 6: Security forces on Tuesday launched a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) in Tral area of south Kashmir district of Pulwama, where a top Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) militant was killed, official sources said.
They said on a tip off about the presence of militants, troops of 42 Rashtriya Rifles (RR), Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police and CRPF launched a joint search operation at village Satura, Tral, in Pulwama this morning. All exit points have been sealed and a massive search operation has been launched.
Details are awaited, they added.

Srinagar, Feb 20: Security forces busted a militant hideout and recovered large cache of arms and ammunition, including explosive material, UBGLs and detonators in the frontier district of Kupwara in the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday, official sources said.
They said on a specific information about the militant hideout in the woods at Lashtiyal village in the north Kashmir district of Kupwara, troops of Rashtriya Rifles (RR), Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) launched a joint search operation in the area.
However, after hectic searches, security forces finally unearthed the hideout and recovered huge cache of arms and ammunition, they said, adding that the recovery included two kg of explosive material which could have been used for making Improvised Explosive Devices ((IEDs), seven detonators, three UBGLs and over 350 rounds of ammunition. They said on a tip off about the presence of militants, security forces and Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police launched a joint search operation in Palhalan area of Baramulla district early this morning.
However, when the security forces were sealing the area, militants opened fire with automatic weapons, they said, adding security forces also retaliated ensuing an encounter.
Sources said two to three militants are holed up in the area.
Meanwhile, additional security forces have been deployed and cordoned off the area to prevent any demonstration, they said.

Srinagar, Feb 13: A CRPF jawan was martyred and two Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militants, who were holed up in a building near battalion headquarters of CRPF in Karan Nagar area of Srinagar, were killed in more than 27 hour-long encounter with security forces.
The martyred jawan was identified as Mujahid Khan. The encounter ensued after alert sentry foiled a fidayeen attack on their camp early on Monday.
'Both the militants have been killed. The operation to sanitise the area is still going,' official sources told on Tuesday.
They said that with the first light, security forces launched an assault on the building where the militants were holed up for the past 24 hours.
They said security forces used UBGL and mortars besides explosives to blast the concrete under construction building as militants were often changing their position from one room to another. Intermittent firing could be heard during the night.
A resident said that firing started at 0615 hrs. 'We also could hear loud explosion near the site of encounter,' he said.
A group of two militants made an unsuccessful attempt to enter the battalion headquarters of CRPF when they were challenged by an alert sentry on the main gate. However, the militants managed to escape and entered a nearby building, a senior CRPF officer said. The area was immediately cordoned off after additional security forces and Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police were rushed from different areas.
The contact was established with the militants holed up in the building at 0930 hrs on Monday when security forces opened fire.
The entire area has been cordoned off. All roads, in the area have been closed for any traffic or pedestrian movement. The main road to downtown, including SMHS hospital from civil lines, has been closed for any traffic. Vehicles are being directed to take alternative routes, including Qamarwari and Khanyar areas.
On Monday, security forces had to burst teargas shells to disperse large number of people who had gathered near the encounter site.
This was the first encounter after a top militant of Naveed Jatt alias Abu Hanzala of Lashker-e-Toiba (LeT) escaped from SMHS hospital in the Karan Nagar area, where he was brought for treatment from Central Jail, Srinagar on February 7 after two police personnel, escorting the detainees, were killed.
However, police later arrested two militants and as many Over Ground Workers (OGWs) who helped Naveed to escape. A day later, Rs 35 lakh were looted from an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) of State Bank of India (SBI) in the area. UNI

A CRPF constable Mujahid Khan was martyred and a police jawan critically injured in the encounter which ensued after CRPF alert sentry foiled a fidayeen attack on their camp on early Monday.

However, militants again resorted to indiscriminate firing on security forces. The encounter was going on when the reports last came in. Srinagar, Feb 12: A fierce encounter ensued after an alert sentry foiled a fidayeen attack on a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) camp in Karan Nagar area of this summer capital, on Monday.
Official sources said that an alert sentry noticed a group of militants approaching towards the camp at Karan Nagar in the city this morning. He opened fire, after which the militants fled away.
Later, security forces cordoned off the entire area and launched a search operation, they said, adding that CRPF personnel fired some shots towards a vacant house in the area. However, militants trapped inside also returned the fire, ensuing a fierce encounter, near the Government Medical College (GMC) side.
The entire area has been sealed after additional security forces and Special Operation Group( SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police personnel rushed to the spot. We could hear firing from the area, a correspondent of UNI said, adding that all mediapersons were stopped at a distance. Traffic in the area has also been diverted through other routes.
This was the first encounter after top militant Naveed Jatt alias Abu Hanzala of Lashker-e-Toiba (LeT) escaped from SMHS hospital in the Karan Nagar area, where he was brought for treatment from Central Jail, Srinagar on February 7 after two police personnel, escorting the detenues, were killed. 
However, police later arrested two militants and as many Over Ground Workers (OGWs), who helped Naveed to escape, a day after Rs 35 lakh were looted from an Automatic Teller Machine (ATM) of the State Bank of India (SBI) in the area. UNI
