Srinagar, Oct 12 (PTI) Normal life in Kashmir was affected Friday due to a strike called by separatists after the killing of PhD scholar-turned-Hizbul Mujahideen commander Manaan Bashir Wani in an encounter with security forces.

Schools, higher educational institutions and business establishments remained closed due to the strike called by the Joint Resistance Leadership, a separatist amalgam comprising Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Mohammad Yasin Malik, officials said.

Public transport remained off the roads in most places but few private vehicles could be seen plying in the city, the officials said.

The separatists called for a shutdown after Wani and his associate Ashiq Hussain Zargar were killed in a gunbattle with security forces in Handwara area of Kupwara district on Thursday.

The situation across the valley so far is peaceful but security personnel have been deployed in strength at vulnerable places for maintaining law and order, the officials said.

Srinagar, Jan 10: Train service has again been suspended on Wednesday for security reasons in south Kashmir, where a youth was killed in security force firing on demonstrators who hit the streets after a Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) militant was gunned down during an encounter.
However, all trains will chug in north Kashmir as per schedule, a railway official told  this morning.
He said an advisory was received from police last night to suspend train service between Badgam-Srinagar in the central Kashmir to Banihal in Jammu region via Anantnag and Qazigund in south. Therefore, he said, no train will run on this track and all trains have been cancelled. Train service on this track was resumed only yesterday after remaining suspended for security reasons on January 8.
Large number of passengers, who had arrived at different railway stations in Srinagar and south Kashmir, were disappointed after being informed about the cancellation of all trains today. Train service has become very popular in the Kashmir valley, which is being considered safe, cheap and fast against other mode of transport service.
'Today, we suspended train service as authorities have apprehension of demonstration in south Kashmir, where a youth was killed after security forces opened fire to disperse stone pelting demonstrators at Redwani in Kulgam district yesterday,' the official said.
Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has expressed deep anguish over the killing of a youth namely Khalid Hussain Dar of Redwani Payeen of tehsil Qaimoh of Kulgam district.
The Chief Minister has directed the district administration to conduct a probe to know the reasons of the killing and come up with a report at the earliest.
Accordingly, the Deputy Commissioner, Kulgam, Talat Parvez has appointed Additional District Development Commissioner, Kulgam as the inquiry officer to ascertain the facts about the death of the said youth. He has been asked to submit a report within two weeks. UNI

Srinagar, Sept 11 :  Train service between Srinagar and Baramulla in north Kashmir resumed this morning, after remaining suspended for a day yesterday for security reasons in view of strike called by separatists against the four-day visit of Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh to the state. However, the train runs between Srinagar to Banihal in Jammu region remained suspended for the second successive day today, when two Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) militants were killed in an encounter with security forces in south Kashmir district of Kulgam early this morning. “We have resumed train service on Srinagar-Badgam in central to Baramulla in north Kashmir this morning after remaining closed yesterday,” a railway official told . He said train service will remained suspended today on Srinagar-Anantnag-Qazigund in south Kashmir to Banihal in Jammu region for security reasons. The official said train service remained suspended following directive from the state administration and police. "There was threat to railway property and passengers," he added. Rail service was also suspended on September 8, when separatists had called for protests after Friday prayers to express solidarity with the Rohingya Muslims. Both the factions of the Hurriyat Conference (HC) and Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF), spearheading the agitation demanding right to self determination, had called for a general strike today against the visit of Mr Singh, who arrived here on September 9 on a four-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir. The train service has become very popular among the passengers, particularly daily travellers and those travelling from Jammu to Srinagar, who prefer boarding train from Banihal. The service is being considered safe, fast and economical. In the past, railways suffered heavy damage to property, including stations and tracks due to violence. Last year the train service remained suspended for about six months due to summer unrest in the valley.UNI

Srinagar, Aug 17 : Concerned Citizens Group (CCG) led by senior BJP leader and former union minister Yashwant Sinha arrived here today to meet the mainstream and separatist leaders besides students to restore peace in the Kashmir valley. However, the report prepared by the CCG during its previous visit in 2016 on the Kashmir situation and possible measures to restore normalcy was not even taken into consideration by the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre. Mr Sinha, after meeting with the working president of the main opposition National Conference (NC), told reporters here today that he was the peace mission to Kashmir. "We are here after a gap of about eight months to meet leaders of different political parties besides students," he said. Srinagar, Aug 14 : Curfew-like restrictions are back today after day-long normalcy yesterday in Shehar-e-Khas (SeK) and downtown in Srinagar, where people remained indoor due to heavy security force and police deployment to prevent any law and order problem. Authorities had imposed similar restrictions on August 12 when separatists, backed by trader groups, had called for a strike against alleged attempts to abrogate Article 35-A. There were no restrictions yesterday in any part of the city. Both the factions of Hurriyat Conference (HC) and Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) urged people to observe a strike today against alleged attempts being made to abrogate Article 35-A of the Constitution. The strike was backed by many trader groups, including Kashmir Economic Alliance (KEA) and Kashmir Traders and Manufacturers Federation (KTMF). There was no strike call from any organizations today. State police personnel and security forces, wearing bulletproof jackets, helmets and holding automatic weapons in their hands, were deployed in these areas to strictly implement the restrictions. All gates of historic Jamia Masjid, stronghold of chairman of moderate Hurriyat Conference (HC) Mirwaiz Moulvi Umar Farooq, who remain under house arrest since last about two months, were also closed and a large number of security forces and state police personnel remained deployed in the area. Nobody was being allowed to enter the Jamia Masjid area by the security forces. The entire Nallahmar road from Khanyar to Qamarwari was closed with barbed wires and no one was allowed to move on the road. Main and link roads were closed with barbed wire and by parking bullet proof vehicles in the middle. People of these areas alleged that milkmen and vegetable vendors were not allowed to enter from outskirts by the security forces due to which they had to drink black tea. However, the Safa Kadal road to S K Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) through Eidgah was open though only patients and ambulances were being allowed after checking their documents.
