Pune (Maha), Sep 20: Two minor girls were allegedly raped by a man and a 17-year-old boy here on Sunday and one of them died of injuries inflicted during the assault days later, a police official said Thursday.

The two girls, both around 12 years' old and residents of the same locality, went to a temple near their home in Hinjawadi area Sunday afternoon, he said.

The two accused, who also lived in the same locality, lured the girls by offering them chocolates. They then took the girls to an isolated area where they allegedly raped them, the official at Hinjawadi Police Station said.

The accused threatened the girls with dire consequences if they revealed the incident to anyone, he said.

The victims did not inform about the incident to their parents. However, one of them complained of pain and weakness following which her parents rushed her to a hospital, where doctors found out that she was traumatised, he said.

The doctors then informed the police, who approached the girl's family in the hospital on Tuesday, but the victim was not in a condition to speak, the official said.

Her family members told police that one more girl from their neighbourhood was with her on Sunday.

"When we approached the other girl, she narrated the entire incident," the official said.

Based on her statement, a case was registered against the two accused, one of whom has been identified as Ganesh Nikam (22), he said.

Pune/Mumbai, Aug 30: Pune police sent the three Left-wing activists, arrested for their alleged links with Maoists, to their homes, as per a directive of the Supreme Court.

Arrangements were made to send the three suspects to their respective cities late last night and all of them have reached their homes, said Pune's Assistant Commissioner of Police Shivaji Pawar, who is the investigation officer in the case.

The three activists will be kept under "house arrest", he said.

"We have our own police officers and personnel along with the local police from the respective cities, who will be deployed at their residences," he added.

Left leaning Telugu poet and writer Varavara Rao reached home in Hyderabad this morning, while activists Vernon Gonsalves and Arun Ferreira, were sent to Mumbai by road, a police official said today.

Gonsalves reached his home in Mumbai's Andheri suburb around 7.30 am.

His wife, advocate Susan Abraham, said, "Vernon reached home safely and we welcomed him."

"We have requested the police not to block the entire road of our housing society which may scare other people living in the building," she added.

Ferriera was taken to his home in Charai area of the neighbouring Thane district, an official said.

The Supreme Court had ordered yesterday that the five human rights activists - Rao, Ferreira, Gonzalves, Sudha Bharadwaj and Gautam Navalakha - arrested in connection with the Koregaon-Bhima violence case would be kept under house arrest at their homes till September 6, observing that dissent was the "safety valve" of democracy.

Following the apex court's order, a court here directed Pune police to send Rao, Gonsalves and Ferreira back to their homes.

While trade unionist and lawyer Bharadwaj is confined to her home in Faridabad and civil liberties activist Navalakha to his Delhi residence, Rao, Gonsalves and Ferreira were brought to Pune on Tuesday night.

Pune police had on Tuesday raided the homes of prominent Left-wing activists in several states and arrested five of them - Rao in Hyderabad, Gonsalves and Ferreira in Mumbai, Bharadwaj in Faridabad and Navalakha in Delhi.

The raids were carried out as part of a probe into a conclave -- Elgar Parishad -- held in Koregaon-Bhima near here on December 31 last year, which had allegedly triggered violence the next day.

"The arrested activists were part of a conspiracy to target higher political functionaries," Joint Commissioner of Pune Police Shivajirao Bodkhe earlier said, without elaborating.

Pune (Maha), Aug 29: Three of the five Left-wing activists, who were arrested yesterday by Maharashtra Police in connection with its ongoing probe into suspected Maoist links to an event held in Pune, were brought to the city late last night, the police said.

A senior Pune police officer said that prominent Telugu poet Varavara Rao, and activists Vernon Gonsalves and Arun Ferreira are likely to be produced in a court later in the day.

Near simultaneous searches were carried out yesterday at the residences of Rao in Hyderabad, Gonzalves and Farreira in Mumbai, trade union activist Sudha Bhardwaj in Faridabad and civil liberties activist Gautam Navalakha in New Delhi, a senior police official had said.

Subsequently, Rao, Bhardwaj, Farreira, Gonzalves and Navalakha were arrested under IPC Section 153 (A), which relates to promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place or birth, residence, language and committing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony, said the official.

Some other sections of the IPC were also pressed against those arrested, along with Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act for their "alleged Naxal activities," said the police official, without elaborating.

Five people allegedly having close Maoist links were arrested in June from Mumbai, Nagpur and Delhi in connection with Elgar Parishad event held on December 31 last year which had later triggered violence at Koregaon-Bhima village in Pune district.

Provocative speeches were made at the Elgar Parishad event which triggered the violence at Koregaon-Bhima, according to an FIR registered at the Vishrambaug police station here after the event.

London/Pune, Aug 9: Astronomers have used an Indian telescope to discover the most distant radio galaxy ever known, located at a distance of 12 billion light-years.

The galaxy from a time when the universe was only seven per cent of its current age was found using the Giant Meter-wave Radio Telescope (GMRT) in Pune.

GMRT is an array of thirty fully steerable parabolic radio telescopes of 45 metre diameter. It is operated by the National Centre for Radio Astrophysics.

The distance to this galaxy was then determined using the Gemini North telescope in Hawaii and the Large Binocular Telescope in Arizona.

The galaxy is perceived as it looked when the universe was only a billion years old, according to the study appearing in the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

This also means that the light from this galaxy is almost 12 billion years old.

"It is very surprising how these galaxies have built up their mass in such a short period of time," said Aayush Saxena from Leiden Observatory in the Netherlands.

"Bright radio galaxies harbour supermassive black holes. It is amazing to find such objects as early in the history of the universe; the time for these supermassive black holes to form and grow must have been very short," said Huub Rottgering, also from Leiden Observatory.

Radio galaxies are very rare objects in the universe. They are colossal galaxies with a supermassive black hole in their centre that actively accretes gas and dust from its surroundings.

This activity initiates the launch of high-energy jet streams, which are capable of accelerating charged particles around the supermassive black hole to almost the speed of light.

These jets are very clearly observed at radio wavelengths.

The fact that such galaxies exist in the distant universe has surprised astronomers.

The discovery of such galaxies at extremely large distances is important for our understanding of the formation and evolution of galaxies, researchers said.

Studying these radio galaxies in detail also sheds light on the formation of primordial black holes, which have driven and regulated the growth of galaxies, they said.

Pune, Aug 9: Internet services were suspended in Maharashtra's Pune district today to prevent rumour-mongering in view of the Maratha quota agitation, police said.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Sandip Patil told the Internet services were temporarily suspended in Baramati, Shirur, Khed, Junnar, Maval, Bhor and Daund rural tehsils of the district.

The step was taken to prevent any untoward incident after violent protests were witnessed during the Maratha community's protest for reservation last month, he said.

Chakan, an industrial hub located in Khed tehsil, witnessed large-scale violence during the Maratha quota agitation on July 30, when around 70 buses were torched and damaged in the area.

Patil said there was no information of any untoward incident in the district so far.

The agitators held a sit-in protest outside the residence of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar in Baramati today.

The Sakal Maratha Samaj, an umbrella body of Maratha groups, has called for a "bandh" today across Maharashtra, except Navi Mumbai, over the community's demand for reservation in government jobs and education.

Over 7,000 police personnel have been deployed in the city, along with some companies of the State Reserve Police Force and Rapid Action Force, to maintain law and order, Pune Commissioner of Police Venkatesham K said.

He added that the pro-reservation Maratha groups had earlier said they would stage peaceful protests at the collector's office.

The police official urged the citizens to carry on with their daily routine.

Fearing violence during the bandh, Pune Collector Naval Kishore Ram issued an order yesterday that schools and colleges will remain shut today.

A release issued by the collectorate earlier had said 70 to 80 vehicles were torched and damaged in the Chakan area during the violence on July 30.

"Two school buses were also torched and the lives of students were endangered," it had said.

"Even if there is no untoward incident during the protest, roads might be blocked and we do not want students to be inconvenienced and parents to be anxious unnecessarily," the collector said.

In view of the bandh, a majority of the commercial units in the Chakan industrial area have also decided to remain closed today.

"There are over 1,000 companies in the Chakan MIDC area and a majority of them have decided to keep their plants shut," Chakan police station's senior inspector Santosh Girigosavi had said yesterday.
