Jammu, Oct 05: Ms. Vibha Mahajan, a researcher of School of Business at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, Katra participated in a two-week long workshop at Guangzhou, China. Notably, Ms. Mahajan was the only Indian flag-bearer, besides other 13 internationally selected participants, who interacted with industry experts and civil society regarding policy developments in China. This workshop, sponsored by UNCTAD and MOST, China, was an enriching experience for the candidate as issues, including policy making, experiences in developing sciences, and technology & innovation for sustainable development wrt agriculture, public health and environmental protection were discussed extensively, as reported Dr. Jyoti Sharma, the candidate’s PhD supervisor. During the workshop, the participants made field visits to Guangdong cities of Shenzhen, Foshan, Dongguan and Guangzhou where they learned how to deal with urban waste and maintain sustainable development with the help of technology, innovation and industrial incubation. Ms. Mahajan also got a chance to showcase her research on India’s STI policies for sustainable development to the foreign delegates from Iran, Sri Lanka, South Africa, Thailand and others. The researcher was felicitated with a certificate on the completion of the workshop. Dr. Sanjeev Jain, Vice-Chancellor (SMVDU), congratulated the researcher and wished her a success in her future endeavours.

Jammu, Oct 05: Flydex Automobiles, a startup sponsored by Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University-Technology Business Incubation Centre, bagged third prize with an award of rupees one lac cash at UP Startup Conclave 2018. The event was held at IIM, Lucknow, and jointly organised by Uttar Pradesh Gov Startup India and LMA Lucknow. 
Out of 426 startups under ‘Product & Ideation Stage’ category, Mr. Aksah Srivastava’s startup, who is also an alumnus of SMVDU, reached the final round, and recognized by the jury members, namely Mr.  Saurabh Jain, Vice-President Paytm; Mr. K.C. Ayyagari, Google Cloud and Mr. Digvijay Singh, COO, Indian Angel Networks. During the event, Flydex demonstrated its patented product “CarbaDex” which increases efficiency of 125cc bike average up to 150 KM/L without affecting the engine performance and life, an idea much appreciated by Mr. Mohsin Raja, Cabinet Minister MSME UP Government.

Noida (UP), Oct 5: The Gautam Buddh Nagar administration held a meeting with the Sharda University management Friday to discuss the fight that broke out on its campus in Greater Noida between groups of Indian and Afghan students, officials said.

Over 350 students, including Indians and Afghans, were booked for rioting and related offences after the clash during which a student from Kashmir got roughed up.

Thursday's incident followed a scuffle on Monday, the purported video of which had surfaced on social media.

Three Afghan students were suspended over the Monday scuffle and the university had announced shutting classes till Sunday, while the mid-term was examinations deferred, according to officials.

District Magistrate Brajesh Narain Singh said the Sharda University management has been asked to bring the two confronting sides to the table and ensure dialogue between them in order to defuse the tension.

India and Afghanistan are friendly countries. The university officials have been asked to get the students from both sides to talk so that cordial relations can be restored among them.

"They have been told to tell the students to concentrate on their studies and focus on upcoming examinations, Singh told.

The administration has also asked the university to restrict entry of outsiders, particularly those making communal statements and inflammatory remarks , he said.

Referring to the purported videos being circulated on social media related to incident at the university, Singh said police would be asked to put a check on people indulging in making such comments.

Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal and former chief ministers Mehbooba Mufti and Omar Abdullah also expressed concern over the incident in western Uttar Pradesh's Greater Noida and sought action from the Centre and the state government.

The governor spoke to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath Friday morning and urged him to ensure that Kashmiri students are provided a safe and secure environment in the educational institutions of the state, an official spokesperson said.

Mufti tweeted, Urge PMO India, (UP chief minister) Yogi Adityanath and (Union Home Minister) Rajnath Singh ji to take strict action against the culprits and ensure safety of students from J&K."

This requires a proper and impartial investigation. Let the facts be brought out and the guilty persons punished. I hope (Union Home minister) Rajnath Singh and (the) Home Ministry will direct the UP government and Noida Police to reassure the students while the investigation proceeds, Abdullah tweeted.

A police official Thursday told PTI that no official complaint was lodged about the clash in which one Indian student from Kashmir suffered injuries and was taken to a hospital.

Police force was deployed outside the university along with security personnel of the PAC. The university had also stepped up security on its premises and denied entry to outsiders, including the press.

The police have taken the cognisance of the case on its own. The Indian student has suffered minor injuries, more of punches and slaps, but was sent for medical examination so that it could be checked if there is any internal injury or not, the official had said.

We have booked 350-400 students, Indians and Afghans both, and we are probing the matter. Students are being identified on the basis of the footage that has surfaced and we will soon quiz them and initiate action, he added.

The official said the case was registered under Indian Penal Code sections 147 (punishment for rioting), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace), 506 (criminal intimidation), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 352 (assault or criminal force otherwise than on grave provocation), and related offences.

The FIR was registered at the Knowledge Park police station.

Police have also charged the students under the Section 7 of The Criminal Law Amendment Act, 1932, which pertains to any act that impedes another person from doing what they can rightfully do, using intimidation, he said. (PTI)

Aligarh (UP), Oct 5: The Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) has ordered a probe into how pictures of Pakistan founder Mohammad Ali Jinnah with Mahatma Gandhi were put on display at a photo exhibition in the varsity.

In May, a portrait of Jinnah at the university's students' union office had caused a major row.

University authorities have removed the photos and a show cause notice was served to the librarian, who is the curator of the exhibition, an official said Friday.

The week-long exhibition, themed around the life and times of the Mahatma, is being held as part of the Gandhi Jayanti celebrations at the AMU.

The probe was ordered after BJP MP Satish Gautam Thursday demanded the removal of some group photos in which the Mahatma is seen along with the Pakistan founder.

"The probe has been ordered as to how these pictures were included in the exhibition and a show cause notice has been served to the librarian Thursday," Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) spokesman Shafey Qidwai said Friday.

"University authorities certainly do not want any controversy on such a matter, keeping in mind the fact that the campus is functioning peacefully. We are only focused on our academic schedule," he said.

The AMU has removed two pictures, including the one in which Gandhi and Jinnah are seen along with others such as Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel. (PTI)

Jammu, Oct 04: The School of Languages and Literature at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University is a research oriented department at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, Katra which holds special lectures to help students decide on the right field of research. 

In this context, today the school organised an extension lecture on “Cinema in Postcolonial India with Special Focus on Bombay Cinema” by Prof. Prabhjot Parmar, Professor, Department of English at University of Fraser Valley, Canada. In her discourse, the eminent professor focused upon the mise-en-scene in Hindi cinema with particular reference to contemporary movies. 

The insightful conglomeration of films as an academic discipline, theory and its practice was quite beneficial for the students and assisted them in developing a global mindset. Prof. Parmar conducted her research into the Indian experience of WWI as part of her post-doctoral research. 

Her area of specialisation includes postcolonial literatures and theory, South Asian literature and cinema, migration and diaspora studies, multicultural Britain and Canada, women's studies, memory and history, world war and colonial soldiers, modern British fiction. Dr. Amitabh V. Dwivedi, Head, School of Languages and Literature appreciated her interactive and enriching sessions. The formal vote of thanks was presented by Dr. Simranpreet Kaur.

Jammu, Oct 04: Ms. Akanksha Badyal, Research Student, School of Languages and Literature, SMVD University presented a paper entitled “Dialectic of Root and Multiplicity: A Post Feminist Inquiry of Indian Chick-Lit” at International Conference on “Research in Social Science and Humanities” Dubai, United Arab Emirates from 30 September- 1 October, 2018. Her research paper aimed at exploring the rhizomatic attitude of chick generation who by defying the dialectics of root and multiplicity exercises the post- feminist ideology of choice and individuality. Ms. Akanksha has been working under the supervision of Dr. Anurag Kumar and Dr. Amitabh V. Dwivedi, at the School of Languages and Literature, SMVDU.
Her research area dwells into investigation of chick lit genre in Indian Literature. Sharing her experience at the conference, Akanksha said, an assortment of research on distinctive works is surely a great assistance and will also provide an impetus to delve into research further. Dr. Sanjeev Jain, Vice- Chancellor, appreciated the researcher’s effort and hoped that other researchers of the School would also explore and present research at international level.

Jammu, Oct 02: On 149th birth anniversary of the Father of Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, a ten-day long Swacch Bharat Mission, culminated and completed. The event was organised by the National Service Scheme (NSS) at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University. All ten days were swarming with events and activities. While addressing the physical and spiritual growth of mind and body, regular yoga sessions were conducted, where a huge number of students, faculty members and staff actively participated. Since the university has been committed to ‘Clean India-Green India’, various cleanliness and plantation drives were taken place on campus with a clear message-go green, be healthy. Jammu, Sept 28: An inter-hostel volleyball tournament was conducted by the Board for Sports Activities today at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, Katra where nine teams from different hostels participated.
The final match was played between Vindhyachal and Trikuta hostel, wherein Vindhyachal won the tournament by 3-1 set (out of best of 5 set). Mr. Balbir Singh from Trikuta hostel and Mr. Sahil Bhardwaj from Vindhyachal hostel performed outstanding during the tournament.
The winner and runner-up teams were awarded with the championship trophies. The tournament was officiated by Sports coach Mr. Sucha Singh and Mr.Sumit Sharma. The President of the Board for Sports Activities, Mr. Rajiv Kumar congratulated the finalists. Dr. Sanjeev Jain, Vice Chancellor (SMVDU) appreciated the players sportsmanship and hoped that they would bring state and national level trophies as well.

Jammu, Sept 24: On a part of cleanliness drive, NSS wing of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University organized a swachh Bharat Abhiyan today to spread the awareness about ‘Swachh Bharat mission’ by the Government of India. A major derive was also conducted in the university for the removal of garbage and unused material from the campus. Faculty Coordinator NSS Mr. Sumanta S Sharma informed that that university had adopted nearby villages of Kakryal under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan in order to transform them into model villages. The event culminating on 2 nd Oct, 2018 commemorates the 150 th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. Dr. Anil K. Tewari, Nodal Officer, Swacch Bharat Abhiyaan emphasized to organize awareness camps to educate people about garbage management to keep their surroundings clean.Many students participated on the inaugural day where they cleaned various areas. The student coordinators of the event were Mr. Dhanraj, Mr. Saransh, Mr. Akhil, Mr. Prabhakar, Mr. Neel Kamal, Ms. Neha, Ms. Simran, Ms. Aruna, Ms. Shubhangi, Ms. Saloni and Ms.Sanya. Imphal, Aug 9: Manipur University Vice-Chancellor (in-charge) Prof W Vishwanath has written a letter to the Centre that the agitating bodies have refused to cooperate with the fact finding committee to probe the allegations of financial and administrative irregularities against the VC A P Pandey.

The agitating bodies have sought for an Independent high power committee under the Commission of Enquiry Act 1952 against Pandey, who is currently on a month-long leave, Vishwanath said in the letter to the HRD Ministry yesterday.

Despite assuming office as in-charge of the post of the vice-chancellor of the central university, he has been unable to perform his official duties, Vishwanath said in the letter which was made available to the media.

As many as 93 colleges have been affiliated to the university and publication of the examination results of final year college students is pending making the possibility of losing an academic year, he said seeking a response in two days.

Academic activities in the university has been paralysed since May 30 when the Manipur University Students Union (MUSU) has demanded removal of Pandey on alleged financial irregularities and administrative negligence.

Meanwhile, a joint press release issued by the Manipur University Teachers Association, the Manipur University Staffs Association and MUSU said that investigation against Pandey should be initiated before August 14 in the interest of the public. (PTI)

Mumbai, Jul 28: A bus, on its way to a hill station, fell into a gorge in Raigad district of Maharashtra this afternoon killing 33 passengers, senior officials said.

The bus was carrying 34 staff members of an agriculture university in the Konkan region. It fell into a 500-feet deep gorge at Ambenali Ghat near Poladpur town, around 180 km from here, District Collector Vijay Suryawanshi told.

Thirty-three passengers died in the accident which took place at around 12.30 pm, he said.

SP Anil Paraskar said the passengers were on their way to Mahabaleshwar, a hill station in Satara district, for a picnic, when the driver lost control over the vehicle while negotiating a turn and fell into the gorge.

All passengers of the bus were all staff of Konkan Krishi Vidyapeeth in Dapoli town, he said.

A team of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been called to the spot to take pull out the bodies from the ill-fated bus. A dozen ambulances and 15 doctors have also reached the spot, Additional SP Sanjay Patil said. (PTI)

Kolkata, Jul 9: Jadavpur University Vice Chancellor Suranjan Das today met members of a students' union, observing hunger strike over the past three days in protest against the new admission procedure, and urged them to withdraw their stir.

Das insisted that it was his job to implement the orders of the university's executive council, the highest decision-making body of the institute, but he was "willing to look for a solution" keeping the interest of students in mind.

"So long I am occupying the VC's chair, I have to go by the decision taken by meeting of EC. What I feel about the issue at a personal level doesn't matter. However, I do have the interest of students in mind," he said.

Around 20 members of Arts Faculty Students' Union (AFSU) started a hunger strike on July 6, two days after the university announced that it would admit undergraduate students in English, comparative literature, Bengali, history, political science and philosophy on the basis of board marks, reversing its earlier decision to hold entrance tests.

Despite requests by Das, the union members today refused to call off their strike.

Somashree Choudhury, the chairperson of AFSU, said the indefinite strike by the 20 students of the arts faculty would continue till the time the authorities reconsider their decision.

"We heard what the VC said, but there was no assurance from his side. The turn of events over the admission issue in past couple of days has only harmed JU's reputation. This can be restored by bringing back the admission test," she said.

The VC, on his part, said he had met Governor K N Tripathi, who is also the Chancellor of the university, and efforts were being made to reach a middle-path, acceptable to all parties concerned.

Das, who was accompanied by Pro-VC Pradip Ghosh, said the university will take every step to monitor the health condition of the students, who had been sitting on hunger strike over the issue.

He also suggested them to use a room in the administrative building for their protest instead of camping out in the open, next to Aurobindo Bhavan.

Meanwhile, joining their colleagues from three other humanities streams, 12 teachers of the philosophy department today refused to lend a helping hand in the admission procedure.

In a letter sent to JU authorities, the teachers said, "We state that if our assistance in any form regarding BA admission of this year is solicited, we will be unable to cooperate unless the stake of teachers of the faculty of arts is reinstated by a written statement."

"If the administration does not involve the teachers in the admission test, then the teachers cannot be a part of the admission process in any way at all," they added.

Earlier, the faculty members from departments of English, comparative literature, and international relations had said that they prefer to stay out of the entire admission process.

A spokesperson of Jadavpur University Teachers' Association (JUTA) said a letter has been sent to Tripathi to seek his appointment for discussing the modalities of the issue, but no response has arrived from Raj Bhavan so far.

The VC, too, has written to Tripathi with details of events unfolding at the university in the wake of the recent decision and subsequent agitation by the students, a university official told PTI.

On July 4, an hour after the decision to scrap entrance tests was announced, the students gheraoed the VC and other members of the executive council in protest.

The gherao, which lasted for 30 hours, was followed by JUTA ceasework, class boycott and indefinite fast by AFSU members. (PTI)

Panaji, Jul 5: President Ram Nath Kovind will address the annual convocation of Goa University on Saturday as part of his two-day visit to the state, a senior official said today.

"Kovind will arrive in the state on Saturday morning and immediately head to Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee Stadium at Dona Paula to attend Goa University's annual convocation ceremony," T S Sawant, Director of State Information and Publicity Department, said.

At 5 pm on the same day, the president would be given a civic reception by the state government at the auditorium of the National Institute of Oceanography, Dona Paula, he added.

"Since he (Kovind) is coming for the first time in Goa after becoming the president, the state government has organised this civic reception in his honour," Sawant said.

Kovind will be in the state on Sunday as well, the official said. (PTI)

Beijing, Jun 7: A Chinese university suspended an Islamic culture class taught by a Pakistani student following criticism that it is spreading religious beliefs to students, a state-run media report said today.
Nanjing Agricultural University in East China's Jiangsu Province denied that the course had spread religious beliefs to students, amid online criticism that the university failed to separate education from religion, state-run Global Times daily reported.
The university said the course "Islamic culture," which was opened to undergraduates in the College of Engineering, was suspended half a year ago.
"It was suspended after the school discovered in late 2017 that the course instructor, a Pakistani student who is seeking a PhD degree in our university, was unqualified to teach in Chinese universities," a university employee surnamed Huang told the paper.
The university said in a separate online statement that it has begun investigating the incident, and will hold relevant people accountable. 
The course was meant to introduce students to Islamic culture, history and festivals, and also to introduce Muslim conventions.
The university said it did not find any evidence that the instructor had guided students to engage in religious practices during and outside the class, the report said.
The university responded after Xi Wuyi, an expert on Marxism at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, wrote on her Sina Weibo on May 30 that the university, in a clear violation of law, spread religious beliefs in class. 
China's Education Law stipulates that education should be separated from religion. Xi's post sparked heated discussions online.
"We did not practice religion in the course and were not asked to memorise any religious texts," an anonymous student, who attended the course, told the paper. 
She said that many people chose this course because it's easy to pass, and the "teacher" conducts lectures in English, "so many students believe the course can improve their English skills." 
"Universities are allowed to offer courses on religion. However, actions such as building religious sites, religious practices and advocating religious dogma in schools are strictly forbidden," Shen Guiping, a religious expert at the Central Institute of Socialism in Beijing, told the paper.
China's newly revised regulation on religious affairs, which took effect in February, bans religious practices and activities in schools and other educational institutions, except at religious schools.
However, Shen noted that a fine line exists between introducing religions to students and guiding them to practice religions. 
The university said it sticks to the ethnic equality principle and encourages cross-cultural exchanges. It also vowed to strengthen scrutiny over its courses and prevent religion from infiltrating the campus.
In May, Northwest Minzu University in Northwest China's Gansu Province stressed a ban on religious activities on campus during Ramadan, amid a clamour to regulate religious practices and make sure they do not "disturb public order. (PTI)

New Delhi, Jan 24: The Supreme Court on Wednesday dismissed senior apex court lawyer Kamini Jaiswal's plea seeking to initiate contempt of court against three lawyers for allegedly violating the court order and allegedly assaulting many journalists while a case was being heard by a lower court against ex-JNU President Kanhaiya Kumar in 2016.
A division bench of the apex court, headed by Justice Ranjan Gogoi, dismissed the petition filed by Jaiswal.
"Petition is dismissed and we don't find any ground for initiation of contempt proceedings against the accused persons," the bench of the top court today said in its order.
The apex court passed the order after hearing a petition filed by Jaiswal, seeking investigation and initiation of contempt proceedings against the three lawyers who had allegedly assaulted many journalists while a case was being heard by the Patiala House Court against the former Jawaharlal Nehru University, President, Kanhaiya Kumar, in 2016. UNI

JAMMU, APRIL 23: Chairing the 77th University Council meeting here at the Raj Bhavan, Governor N.N. Vohra, Chancellor, University of Kashmir, urged the Vice Chancellor Prof. Khurshid  Iqbal Andrabi to maintain continued focus on high teaching standards, quality research and strengthen linkages with identified institutions of excellence within the country and abroad. Sh. Mohammad Altaf Bukhari, Minister for Education participated in the meeting.
To enhance awareness of the initiatives taken by the University for improvements in pedagogy, Chancellor advised Vice Chancellor to publicise the work being done and results achieved.
 Chancellor congratulated the University for figuring amongst top 200 institutions in QS-BRICS international ranking and securing the 73rd rank in the National Institutional Ranking Framework-2017. While appreciating the University’s performance in teaching-learning and research areas, he emphasized systematic efforts being made for improving future rankings by addressing the shortfalls in parameters of Outreach and Inclusivity (OI) and Peer Perception (PP).
Reviewing the Action Taken Reports on critical areas, Chancellor reiterated that the University must not deviate from its set goal of undertaking socially-relevant research on identified problems facing the State and imparting quality education to students, besides high attention to sports and extra-curricular activities.
Prof Andrabi briefed the Council  regarding the improvements brought about in regard to conduct of examinations and introducing transparency in regard to the University’s policies, recruitments, memoranda of understandings signed with top ranking institutions including Montana Tech, USA, e-governance practices, live-streaming of results etc. He informed that at present 212 research projects are ongoing, and 56 placements have been made through 3 recruitment drives during October 2016-March 2017.
The Council had  detailed deliberation on the agenda items which included several key matters related to academics and research, establishment of the Directorate of Admissions and Competitive Examinations;  reorganization of Institute of Technology (Zakura Campus); policy regarding refund of fee and return of documents after closure of admissions; grant special chance to PG pass outs of batches 2004-2012, for improving their performance; introduction  of PG course in Geography at the Kargil and Leh satellite campuses; shifting 25 positions of Assistant Professor created under UGC 12th Plan; establishment of Department of Anthroplogy and Department of Philosophy; enacting  policies for governing Admissions and Residence of Students in University-maintained Hostels, etc.
