Jammu, Oct 05: Ms. Vibha Mahajan, a researcher of School of Business at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, Katra participated in a two-week long workshop at Guangzhou, China. Notably, Ms. Mahajan was the only Indian flag-bearer, besides other 13 internationally selected participants, who interacted with industry experts and civil society regarding policy developments in China. This workshop, sponsored by UNCTAD and MOST, China, was an enriching experience for the candidate as issues, including policy making, experiences in developing sciences, and technology & innovation for sustainable development wrt agriculture, public health and environmental protection were discussed extensively, as reported Dr. Jyoti Sharma, the candidate’s PhD supervisor. During the workshop, the participants made field visits to Guangdong cities of Shenzhen, Foshan, Dongguan and Guangzhou where they learned how to deal with urban waste and maintain sustainable development with the help of technology, innovation and industrial incubation. Ms. Mahajan also got a chance to showcase her research on India’s STI policies for sustainable development to the foreign delegates from Iran, Sri Lanka, South Africa, Thailand and others. The researcher was felicitated with a certificate on the completion of the workshop. Dr. Sanjeev Jain, Vice-Chancellor (SMVDU), congratulated the researcher and wished her a success in her future endeavours.

Jammu, Oct 05: Flydex Automobiles, a startup sponsored by Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University-Technology Business Incubation Centre, bagged third prize with an award of rupees one lac cash at UP Startup Conclave 2018. The event was held at IIM, Lucknow, and jointly organised by Uttar Pradesh Gov Startup India and LMA Lucknow. 
Out of 426 startups under ‘Product & Ideation Stage’ category, Mr. Aksah Srivastava’s startup, who is also an alumnus of SMVDU, reached the final round, and recognized by the jury members, namely Mr.  Saurabh Jain, Vice-President Paytm; Mr. K.C. Ayyagari, Google Cloud and Mr. Digvijay Singh, COO, Indian Angel Networks. During the event, Flydex demonstrated its patented product “CarbaDex” which increases efficiency of 125cc bike average up to 150 KM/L without affecting the engine performance and life, an idea much appreciated by Mr. Mohsin Raja, Cabinet Minister MSME UP Government. 
Mr. Akash Srivastava formally thanked SMVDU Technology Business Incubation Centre for its support and guidance. Dr. Swarkar Sharma, CEO, SMVDU-TBIC informed that huge potential and outstanding technology-based ideas like Flydex were discovered and promoted by the SMVDU-TBIC. Jammu, Oct 04: The School of Languages and Literature at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University is a research oriented department at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, Katra which holds special lectures to help students decide on the right field of research. 

In this context, today the school organised an extension lecture on “Cinema in Postcolonial India with Special Focus on Bombay Cinema” by Prof. Prabhjot Parmar, Professor, Department of English at University of Fraser Valley, Canada. In her discourse, the eminent professor focused upon the mise-en-scene in Hindi cinema with particular reference to contemporary movies. 

The insightful conglomeration of films as an academic discipline, theory and its practice was quite beneficial for the students and assisted them in developing a global mindset. Prof. Parmar conducted her research into the Indian experience of WWI as part of her post-doctoral research. 

Her area of specialisation includes postcolonial literatures and theory, South Asian literature and cinema, migration and diaspora studies, multicultural Britain and Canada, women's studies, memory and history, world war and colonial soldiers, modern British fiction. Dr. Amitabh V. Dwivedi, Head, School of Languages and Literature appreciated her interactive and enriching sessions. The formal vote of thanks was presented by Dr. Simranpreet Kaur.

Jammu, Oct 04: Ms. Akanksha Badyal, Research Student, School of Languages and Literature, SMVD University presented a paper entitled “Dialectic of Root and Multiplicity: A Post Feminist Inquiry of Indian Chick-Lit” at International Conference on “Research in Social Science and Humanities” Dubai, United Arab Emirates from 30 September- 1 October, 2018. Her research paper aimed at exploring the rhizomatic attitude of chick generation who by defying the dialectics of root and multiplicity exercises the post- feminist ideology of choice and individuality. Ms. Akanksha has been working under the supervision of Dr. Anurag Kumar and Dr. Amitabh V. Dwivedi, at the School of Languages and Literature, SMVDU.
Her research area dwells into investigation of chick lit genre in Indian Literature. Sharing her experience at the conference, Akanksha said, an assortment of research on distinctive works is surely a great assistance and will also provide an impetus to delve into research further. Dr. Sanjeev Jain, Vice- Chancellor, appreciated the researcher’s effort and hoped that other researchers of the School would also explore and present research at international level.

Jammu, Oct 02: On 149th birth anniversary of the Father of Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, a ten-day long Swacch Bharat Mission, culminated and completed. The event was organised by the National Service Scheme (NSS) at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University. All ten days were swarming with events and activities. While addressing the physical and spiritual growth of mind and body, regular yoga sessions were conducted, where a huge number of students, faculty members and staff actively participated. Since the university has been committed to ‘Clean India-Green India’, various cleanliness and plantation drives were taken place on campus with a clear message-go green, be healthy. To make ten days an engaging saga, various competitions were also organised, such as sketching competition, themed “The legacy of Mahatma” and an oratory compétition, titled “Swacchata hi Seva”. Volunteers and students from the faculties of Engineering, Sciences, Humanities, Architecture and Management contributed to the core, as reported by Mr. Sumanta S. Jammu, Sept 28: With an objective to stimulate the young minds for ntrepreneurship activities, the Entrepreneurship Development Cell (EDC) of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University organised a three-day Entrepreneurship Awareness Camp sponsored by DST-NIMAT Project.The event comprises number of training sessions by resource persons, interaction with the successful entrepreneurs to gain hands-on experience for inculcating entrepreneurial traits/competencies and enhancing confidence amongst the participants. Furthermore, the camp is also going to organise industrial visit for the participants during the event with an objective to provide field exposure. The EAC is also going to indoctrinate skills to develop business strategies and articulate vision for competitive excellence. The event has evidenced huge participation from the students of B Tech, M Tech, B Arch, MBA, and alike. The prime objective of the camp is to sensitise the students in the domain areas of entrepreneurship management and related tools, as briefed by Dr. Suparn Sharma, Chief Coordinator of the Camp. Dr. Rashi Taggar of the School of Business believes that this event will be immensely useful for budding entrepreneurs as the participants will get motivated by the live story of successful entrepreneurs, such as Mr. Sujat Mahajan and others.

Jammu, Sept 28: To promote creative arts & aesthetics, the Hindi Cell of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, in association with the Jammu-Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture & Languages, Jammu organised a Kavi-sammelan in the Matrika Auditorium. This event was a part of Hindi Pakhwada celebrations on Campus, as reported by Dr. Anil Tewari, the Nodal Officer of Hindi Cell, during his welcome address. The poets from Jammu division as well from SMVDU recited their poetry, namely Prof. Nirmal Vinod (also the Chair of the event), Dr. Aruna Sharma, Dr. Veena Sharma, Shri Keval Kumar Keval, Smt. Babita Rani, Km. Isha Balgotra, Smt. Rashmi Gupta, Dr. Saurabh (from School of Business), Dr. Amitabh Dwivedi (Head, School of Language & Literature), Dr. Madhu Mangal Chaturvedi (from School of Philosophy & Culture), Shri Anurag Sharma (B. Arch), Shri Nikhil Khajuria (B. Tech), Km. Shagun Gupta (B. Tech), Shri Mohit Chaudhary (B. Tech), Shri Paras Dubey (M.Sc. Economics). The poetry event was conducted by Smt. Jammu, Sept 28: An inter-hostel volleyball tournament was conducted by the Board for Sports Activities today at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, Katra where nine teams from different hostels participated.
The final match was played between Vindhyachal and Trikuta hostel, wherein Vindhyachal won the tournament by 3-1 set (out of best of 5 set). Mr. Balbir Singh from Trikuta hostel and Mr. Sahil Bhardwaj from Vindhyachal hostel performed outstanding during the tournament.
The winner and runner-up teams were awarded with the championship trophies. The tournament was officiated by Sports coach Mr. Sucha Singh and Mr.Sumit Sharma. The President of the Board for Sports Activities, Mr. Rajiv Kumar congratulated the finalists. Dr. Sanjeev Jain, Vice Chancellor (SMVDU) appreciated the players sportsmanship and hoped that they would bring state and national level trophies as well.

Jammu, Sept 21: Mr. Rohit Kumar Maurya, an alumnus (2011-15) of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, is visiting MIT Cambridge, USA. Mr. Maurya is currently pursuing M.Tech.in Mechanical Engineering with specialization in Thermal and Fluids Engineering from IIT Bombay. As a Tata Fellow, he is currently working on an agricultural project, titled “Energy Efficient Jaggery Maker”, which is aimed to enhance the efficiency of Indian jaggery industry and make it more profitable. This project is funded by Tata Centre for Technology and Design, IIT Bombay. As a part of the Tata Fellowship, he will be visiting MIT Tata Centre, Cambridge, USA, a sister organization of TCTD, IITB, for 2 weeks from 25 September, 2018 onwards. The objective of this visit is to understand the approach and methodology used by researchers at MIT for any particular social problem. In this series, he will be attending MIT Tata Centre's Symposium and Workshops, visiting labs and research centres along with meetings with social entrepreneurs. He has also served as Junior Research Fellow at Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, BARC Mumbai and had worked in the broad area of agriculture for his major project. He understands that there is a huge gap between available technology and existing problems which motivates him to steer his work in the agricultural field as he himself comes from an agrarian background. Dr. Sanjeev Jain, the Vice-Chancellor, SMVDU congratulated Mr. Maurya and exhorted upon the student and scholar community to follow the path of hard work, commitment, dedication and sincerity to achieve their best and desired goals.

Jammu, Sept 8: A 61-year-old pilgrim from Bihar died Saturday after falling unconscious at a hotel in Katra the base camp for Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine in Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said.

Suraj Dev Parshad, a resident of Karmali Chak area of Patna, had reached Katra to pay obeisance at the famous shrine.

He fell unconscious at a hotel counter while booking a room and was immediately rushed to nearby a community health centre, a police official said.

Parshad was declared brought dead by doctors and his body would be handed over to his family members after completion of legal formalities, the official said. (PTI)

Jammu, Jul 21: A 30-year-old man from Delhi died of suspected heart attack enroute to the cave shrine of Vaishno Devi in Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir, a police official said today.

Mukesh Sharma, a resident of Delhi's Rohini area, fell unconscious near Battery car point along the new track to the cave shrine last evening and was later declared brought dead by doctors at a dispensary nearby, the official said.

He said the pilgrim was accompanied by his wife and the couple were on way to the shrine to offer their prayers when he apparently suffered the massive heart attack and fell down.

His body was brought to a health centre at Katra and is being handed over to his family for last rites, the official said. (PTI)

Jammu, Jul 17: A 50-year-old woman, who was injured in the Siar Baba waterfall accident in the district, today succumbed to injuries at a hospital in Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir, taking the death toll in the incident to eight, officials said.

A huge boulder had rolled down a 100-feet high waterfall at Talwara village, killing seven persons and injuring 33 others on Sunday last.

The incident had happened when a large number of people, mostly from Jammu district, had gathered at the picnic spot and some of them were taking a bath under the waterfall.

Babli Devi, a resident of Gangyal and one of the critically injured persons, succumbed to injuries at the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Superspeciality Hospital at Kakryal near Katra this morning, the officials said.

All the 33 injured were admitted to hospital on Sunday evening and being provided free treatment by the shrine board.

Of them, five of the seriously injured are recuperating in Intensive Care Units while four of whom were operated upon by the neurosurgery team of the hospital.

Five other persons who suffered fractures were operated upon yesterday, the officials said adding rest of the injured are stable and would be discharged in due course.

Immediately after the accident, Governor N N Vohra had directed Chief Executive Officer, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, Dheeraj Gupta, to make arrangements for the treatment of the injured.

As per the directions of the Governor who is also chairman of the Board, the entire cost towards the treatment of the injured persons is being borne by the board.

The officials said family members of the injured patients have also been provided food and accommodation and other required support by the Board, within hospital premises. (PTI)

KAKRYAL, JULY 16: On the directions of Governor N. N. Vohra, Chairman Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, 35 critically injured persons in the yesterday’s tragic incident at Siar Baba near Reasi were immediately rushed to the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Super-specialty Hospital (SMVDNSH), Kakryal, for urgent treatment.
Of those injured, two were declared as brought dead, while the other 33 are undergoing treatment at this Hospital since last evening. Of these 33 patients, 6 who are seriously injured are being managed in the Intensive Critical Care Units, 4 of whom were operated last night by the Neurosurgery Team of the Hospital.
5 other patients, having different types of fractures, shall be operated electively today by the Orthopedics Team of the Hospital. All the other patients are stable and shall be discharged in due course.
It may be recalled that on being informed about the accident, Governor had directed Sh. Dheeraj Gupta, CEO, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, to make immediate arrangements for all the injured persons being taken to the Shrine Board’s Super Specialty Hospital at Kakryal. As per the directions of the Governor, the entire cost towards the treatment of the injured persons is being borne by the Shrine Board. Meanwhile, the family members of the patients have also been provided food and accommodation and other required support by the Shrine Board, within the Hospital premises.

KATRA, JULY 13: As part of the Shrine Board’s continuing efforts for enlarging and upgrading facilities for the pilgrims by adopting the latest eco-friendly technologies, on the directions of Governor N. N. Vohra, Chairman of the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, a phased programme is being implemented for the renovation and technological upgradation of all Toilet Blocks located along the Katra to Bhawan tracks,  for securing enhanced sanitation and high levels of cleanliness in the Shrine area.
In furtherance of these objectives, the renovation and upgradation of all 36 Toilet Blocks along the tracks has been recently completed at a cost of about Rs. 3.5 crore. Some of the upgraded Toilet Blocks have also been equipped with western style seats to meet the requirements of senior citizens and specially-abled persons.
For the first time, in line with the Board’s multifarious environment-friendly measures, bio-sanitation products based on a consortium of different microbes and extract of plants have been introduced, replacing chemical based reagents for cleaning of toilets.
Continuing with the initiative to add newer facilities for the pilgrims, a new 4-storey earthquake resistant Toilet Block with modern facilities is under construction at Adhkuwari. With a built up area of 8760 sft, this Toilet Block is estimated to cost Rs. 1.67 crore and will become functional by the forthcoming Navratras. It will have an elevator and covered sitting area on the rooftop. All the 7 Toilet Blocks on the recently inaugurated Tarakote Marg have also been specially equipped to cater to all segments of pilgrims, including senior citizens and specially- abled persons.
Meanwhile, in an effort towards water conservation and to reduce the very large quantity of water consumed for flushing of the urinals, all the 324 urinals installed all along the tracks, in Bhawan area and in other establishments of the Board have been converted into waterless urinals by switching over to the “Flush Me Not” programme. As a result of this, every urinal is saving at an average 10,000 to 12,500 litres of water per month, thereby making a net saving of nearly 4 crore litres of water per annum. This cost effective technology besides saving water also saves expenditure on chemical disinfectants by using eco-friendly cleaning products. It does not require any special expertise and is being handled by the local sanitation staff with rudimentary training. This technology has resulted in improved hygiene in and around the urinals and is being widely appreciated.

KATRA, JUNE 18: The Siar Dabri-Bhawan Material Ropeway, which has been installed by Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board at a cost of Rs. 12 crore, is facilitating quick and eco-friendly transportation of prasad and various other items and materials from Katra to Bhawan and on the return journey to Katra the wagons carry scrap and other items. This is the first ever Material Ropeway of its kind installed in the State.
It is pertinent to recall that this Material Ropeway, along with the newly constructed Tarakote Marg between Katra and Adhkuwari, was formally inaugurated by the Hon’ble Prime Minister on 19 May 2018.
The operation of this Material Ropeway has enabled hassle-free transportation of construction and varied other materials from Siar Dabri to the Shrine. This system, which has a carrying capacity of 5000 kg of materials per hour, will help to significantly decongest the existing track by reducing the logistics of ferrying materials, food stuffs etc. on the Yatra tracks. The decongestion of the tracks shall significantly enhance the convenience of pilgrims.
Governor N. N. Vohra, Chairman of the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, who has been personally monitoring the implementation of the Shrine Board’s infrastructure development projects, directed CEO to ensure the maximum possible  utilization of the Material Ropeway, as per the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP), for the better management of the pilgrimage.
Very shortly, when the Ropeway will run to its full capacity, it is expected to transport goods and materials for catering to the requirements of the various users at the Shrine and in the adjoining areas. It will also facilitate the various Service Providers which operate in the Shrine area by carrying their materials at a reasonable rate.
Further, as part of Central Store decongestion plan at Banganga, a Sub-Store has been established at Siar Dabri near the Material Ropeway Starting Point which would significantly augment the storage buffer capacity.       
The entire system, which is electrically operated, will help in preserving the fragile eco-system of Trikuta Hills, besides very significantly reducing the number of goods/ materials carrying mules on the track to the Shrine.

KATRA, MAY 26 :  Governor N.N. Vohra, Chairman of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, reviewed the functioning of the Tarakote Marg with Sh.  Anshul Garg, Additional CEO, Shrine Board. This over 7 km long picturesque Marg, between Katra and Adhkuwari was opened to pilgrims less than two weeks ago and finally inaugurated by Hon’ble Prime Minister on 19th May 2018.
          In the past 13 days during 13-25 May, nearly 20,000 on-foot pilgrims used Tarakote Marg for their journey to the Holy Cave Shrine and on their return journey to Katra. 
          Almost all pilgrims who have walked on this new track have expressed high satisfaction. They are particularly appreciative of the beautiful ambience, scenic view of the surrounding areas, gentle gradient of the 6 meter wide track, modern infrastructure and the logistics put in place by the Shrine Board for facilitation of the pilgrims. The floating fountains in the water body developed at Tarakote have become a special attraction for pilgrims, particularly the children. The colourful lights emanating from these fountains present a panoramic view during nights. 
The Tarakote Marg has 6 food outlets which offer hygienic food at reasonable rates, 13 RO water points and 6 ultra filtered water ATMs for providing filtered quality drinking water while more are being added, besides attractively designed shelter sheds have been installed for protection of pilgrims from the vagaries of weather and shooting stones. To ensure utmost sanitation and cleanliness on the track, mechanized cleaning is being done 24x7 through ride-on machines, the Toilet Blocks are being cleaned with pressure jet machines while vacuum cleaners are deployed for general cleaning.  
Many pilgrims have preferred to walk on the specially constructed 1.5 km Link Road which takes off near Gulshan Langar for their onward journey on the Tarakote Marg.       
Governor  has asked Sh. Garg, Addl CEO to send him daily reports, by 8 pm every evening, on every aspect of the Tarakote Marg usage.

Governing Council for Gurukul meets
JAMMU, MAY 21:  The 24th meeting of Governing Council for Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Gurukul, Charan Paduka, Katra, was held here in which a number of important decisions were taken for developing this institution as a centre of excellence.
The Governing Council discussed a scheme for institutionalising  fellowships for the top 5 meritorious students of Shastri classes of the Gurukul for pursuing Acharya or equivalent Post-Graduation Course in Sanskrit, Jyotish, Darshan and Ved streams in the leading institutions of the country. The merit fellowships will be provided to the students for a period of 2 years based on their academic performance during three years of the Shastri Course, including the marks obtained in English. The amount of fellowship to be provided by the Shrine Board will be approx. Rs. 50,000/- per to the meritorious scholar. The draft scheme will be placed before Governor N.N. Vohra, Chairman, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, for consideration and approval.
Sh. B. B. Vyas, Member of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board and Chairman of the Governing Council for Gurukul, chaired the meeting. Prof. Y. K. Mishra; Prof. Vishwamurti Shastri; Sh. Umang Narula, Principal Secretary to the Governor and Chief Executive Officer of the Shrine Board; Dr. M. K. Kumar, Additional CEO; Sh. Pankaj Gupta, Dy. CEO and Administrator of Gurukul; Sh. Hem Kant Prasher, Chief Accounts Officer; and Sh. Gopal Dass Sharma, Head Pujari, Bhawan participated in the meeting.
Sh. Vyas emphasised the need for preparing a dynamic and inter active website of the Gurukul and hosting all the relevant information including the Vision, Mission and the achievements of this institution. He added that a complete database of the alumni of the Gurukul should be prepared so that they remain connected to their alma mater. He also suggested setting up a smart classroom in the Gurukul for promoting smart learning besides organizing guest lectures by the experts in the relevant fields of knowledge for the benefit of students. He also asked for putting in place a biometric attendance system besides installation of CCTV cameras in the Gurukul.
The Chairman of the Governing Council advised the preparing of a Master Plan for the Gurukul so that future infrastructure development is carried out in a planned manner.
 The Governing Council desired that the Newsletter of the Gurukul titled “Shambhavi”, be published as an e-magazine to effectively disseminate information about the activities and achievements of this institution.
The meeting also decided to organise four refresher courses, 2 each for Pandits and Pujaris from the Shrine Board as well as from other parts of the state, during the current financial year.
Presently, 166 students are studying from class 6th to Shastri Class in this fully residential institution which was established by the Shrine Board in 2010. Education, boarding, lodging, books, uniforms etc. are being provided to the students by the Shrine Board totally free of cost.  The Gurukul is affiliated to the Sampurnanand Sanskrit Vishwavidyala, Varanasi.

SRINAGAR, MAY 21: Prof. Sanjeev Jain, Vice Chancellor, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, called on Governor N.N. Vohra, Chancellor of the University, at the Raj Bhavan today.
Prof. Jain briefed the Governor about the progress achieved in the past months in the academic, administrative and infrastructural development arenas and the initiatives presently underway.
Governor discussed with Prof. Jain the importance of systematic efforts being continued to attract the best persons to fill Faculty positions and, side by side, ensuring that there was no gap whatsoever in the quality of teaching and maintaining sharp focus on the implementation of relevant research projects.
