Jammu, Oct 05: Ms. Vibha Mahajan, a researcher of School of Business at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, Katra participated in a two-week long workshop at Guangzhou, China. Notably, Ms. Mahajan was the only Indian flag-bearer, besides other 13 internationally selected participants, who interacted with industry experts and civil society regarding policy developments in China. This workshop, sponsored by UNCTAD and MOST, China, was an enriching experience for the candidate as issues, including policy making, experiences in developing sciences, and technology & innovation for sustainable development wrt agriculture, public health and environmental protection were discussed extensively, as reported Dr. Jyoti Sharma, the candidate’s PhD supervisor. During the workshop, the participants made field visits to Guangdong cities of Shenzhen, Foshan, Dongguan and Guangzhou where they learned how to deal with urban waste and maintain sustainable development with the help of technology, innovation and industrial incubation. Ms. Mahajan also got a chance to showcase her research on India’s STI policies for sustainable development to the foreign delegates from Iran, Sri Lanka, South Africa, Thailand and others. The researcher was felicitated with a certificate on the completion of the workshop. Dr. Sanjeev Jain, Vice-Chancellor (SMVDU), congratulated the researcher and wished her a success in her future endeavours.

Jammu, Oct 05: Flydex Automobiles, a startup sponsored by Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University-Technology Business Incubation Centre, bagged third prize with an award of rupees one lac cash at UP Startup Conclave 2018. The event was held at IIM, Lucknow, and jointly organised by Uttar Pradesh Gov Startup India and LMA Lucknow. 
Out of 426 startups under ‘Product & Ideation Stage’ category, Mr. Aksah Srivastava’s startup, who is also an alumnus of SMVDU, reached the final round, and recognized by the jury members, namely Mr.  Saurabh Jain, Vice-President Paytm; Mr. K.C. Ayyagari, Google Cloud and Mr. Digvijay Singh, COO, Indian Angel Networks. During the event, Flydex demonstrated its patented product “CarbaDex” which increases efficiency of 125cc bike average up to 150 KM/L without affecting the engine performance and life, an idea much appreciated by Mr. Mohsin Raja, Cabinet Minister MSME UP Government. 
Mr. Akash Srivastava formally thanked SMVDU Technology Business Incubation Centre for its support and guidance. Dr. Swarkar Sharma, CEO, SMVDU-TBIC informed that huge potential and outstanding technology-based ideas like Flydex were discovered and promoted by the SMVDU-TBIC. Dr. Sanjeev Jain, Vice-Chancellor, congratulated the alumnus, and appreciated the sincere efforts put up by SMVDU-TBIC team.

Jammu, Oct 04: The School of Languages and Literature at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University is a research oriented department at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, Katra which holds special lectures to help students decide on the right field of research. 

In this context, today the school organised an extension lecture on “Cinema in Postcolonial India with Special Focus on Bombay Cinema” by Prof. Prabhjot Parmar, Professor, Department of English at University of Fraser Valley, Canada. In her discourse, the eminent professor focused upon the mise-en-scene in Hindi cinema with particular reference to contemporary movies. 

The insightful conglomeration of films as an academic discipline, theory and its practice was quite beneficial for the students and assisted them in developing a global mindset. Prof. Parmar conducted her research into the Indian experience of WWI as part of her post-doctoral research. 

Her area of specialisation includes postcolonial literatures and theory, South Asian literature and cinema, migration and diaspora studies, multicultural Britain and Canada, women's studies, memory and history, world war and colonial soldiers, modern British fiction. Dr. Amitabh V. Dwivedi, Head, School of Languages and Literature appreciated her interactive and enriching sessions. The formal vote of thanks was presented by Dr. Simranpreet Kaur.

Jammu, Oct 04: Ms. Akanksha Badyal, Research Student, School of Languages and Literature, SMVD University presented a paper entitled “Dialectic of Root and Multiplicity: A Post Feminist Inquiry of Indian Chick-Lit” at International Conference on “Research in Social Science and Humanities” Dubai, United Arab Emirates from 30 September- 1 October, 2018. Her research paper aimed at exploring the rhizomatic attitude of chick generation who by defying the dialectics of root and multiplicity exercises the post- feminist ideology of choice and individuality. Ms. Akanksha has been working under the supervision of Dr. Anurag Kumar and Dr. Amitabh V. Dwivedi, at the School of Languages and Literature, SMVDU.
Her research area dwells into investigation of chick lit genre in Indian Literature. Sharing her experience at the conference, Akanksha said, an assortment of research on distinctive works is surely a great assistance and will also provide an impetus to delve into research further. Dr. Sanjeev Jain, Vice- Chancellor, appreciated the researcher’s effort and hoped that other researchers of the School would also explore and present research at international level.

Jammu, Oct 02: On 149th birth anniversary of the Father of Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, a ten-day long Swacch Bharat Mission, culminated and completed. The event was organised by the National Service Scheme (NSS) at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University. All ten days were swarming with events and activities. While addressing the physical and spiritual growth of mind and body, regular yoga sessions were conducted, where a huge number of students, faculty members and staff actively participated. Since the university has been committed to ‘Clean India-Green India’, various cleanliness and plantation drives were taken place on campus with a clear message-go green, be healthy. To make ten days an engaging saga, various competitions were also organised, such as sketching competition, themed “The legacy of Mahatma” and an oratory compétition, titled “Swacchata hi Seva”. Volunteers and students from the faculties of Engineering, Sciences, Humanities, Architecture and Management contributed to the core, as reported by Mr. Sumanta S. Sharma, NSS Faculty Coordinator.Dr. Sanjeev Jain, Vice Chancellor, SMVDU, congratulated the NSS team and appreciated their sincere efforts.

Jammu, Sept 28: With an objective to stimulate the young minds for ntrepreneurship activities, the Entrepreneurship Development Cell (EDC) of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University organised a three-day Entrepreneurship Awareness Camp sponsored by DST-NIMAT Project.The event comprises number of training sessions by resource persons, interaction with the successful entrepreneurs to gain hands-on experience for inculcating entrepreneurial traits/competencies and enhancing confidence amongst the participants. Furthermore, the camp is also going to organise industrial visit for the participants during the event with an objective to provide field exposure. The EAC is also going to indoctrinate skills to develop business strategies and articulate vision for competitive excellence. The event has evidenced huge participation from the students of B Tech, M Tech, B Arch, MBA, and alike. The prime objective of the camp is to sensitise the students in the domain areas of entrepreneurship management and related tools, as briefed by Dr. Suparn Sharma, Chief Coordinator of the Camp. Dr. Rashi Taggar of the School of Business believes that this event will be immensely useful for budding entrepreneurs as the participants will get motivated by the live story of successful entrepreneurs, such as Mr. Sujat Mahajan and others.

Jammu, Sept 28: To promote creative arts & aesthetics, the Hindi Cell of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, in association with the Jammu-Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture & Languages, Jammu organised a Kavi-sammelan in the Matrika Auditorium. This event was a part of Hindi Pakhwada celebrations on Campus, as reported by Dr. Anil Tewari, the Nodal Officer of Hindi Cell, during his welcome address. The poets from Jammu division as well from SMVDU recited their poetry, namely Prof. Nirmal Vinod (also the Chair of the event), Dr. Aruna Sharma, Dr. Veena Sharma, Shri Keval Kumar Keval, Smt. Babita Rani, Km. Isha Balgotra, Smt. Rashmi Gupta, Dr. Saurabh (from School of Business), Dr. Amitabh Dwivedi (Head, School of Language & Literature), Dr. Madhu Mangal Chaturvedi (from School of Philosophy & Culture), Shri Anurag Sharma (B. Arch), Shri Nikhil Khajuria (B. Tech), Km. Shagun Gupta (B. Tech), Shri Mohit Chaudhary (B. Tech), Shri Paras Dubey (M.Sc. Economics). The poetry event was conducted by Smt. Jammu, Sept 28: An inter-hostel volleyball tournament was conducted by the Board for Sports Activities today at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, Katra where nine teams from different hostels participated.
The final match was played between Vindhyachal and Trikuta hostel, wherein Vindhyachal won the tournament by 3-1 set (out of best of 5 set). Mr. Balbir Singh from Trikuta hostel and Mr. Sahil Bhardwaj from Vindhyachal hostel performed outstanding during the tournament.
The winner and runner-up teams were awarded with the championship trophies. The tournament was officiated by Sports coach Mr. Sucha Singh and Mr.Sumit Sharma. The President of the Board for Sports Activities, Mr. Rajiv Kumar congratulated the finalists. Dr. Sanjeev Jain, Vice Chancellor (SMVDU) appreciated the players sportsmanship and hoped that they would bring state and national level trophies as well.

Jammu, Sept 22: The School of Languages & Literature organised one-day National Doctoral Students Conclave today at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, Katra (SMVDU) where research scholars of J&K universities and other states, participated and presented their papers on various topics, including Dalit Studies, Queer Studies, Public Sphere, Western Pahari Languages, Management, Philosophy and Cultural Studies.
The School of Languages & Literature is a leading research-oriented department in the university which organises academic events and activities on regular basis. During the inaugural session, Prof. D. Mukhopadhyay, Dean, Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences, SMVDU was the chief guest on the occasion. Addressing the gathering Prof. Mukhopadhyay emphasised on the qualities of a good research and researcher, while enumerating that iteration process of methods, questions and data is important.
On The Occasion, Dr. Amitabh V Dwivedi, coordinator & Head, School of Languages & Literature gave a detail that the school felicitated NET & SET qualified students of the school. Many quality papers were presented and based on their presentations three scholars, namely Ms. Bhushan Shamra, Ms. Ayushi & Ms. Parul Priya were awarded with cash prize and certificates. Dr. Anurag Kumar, Convener of the event said that the conclave is very unique in that it is focused on every spheres of research. The organising committee thanked Dr. Ashok K. Tarai, Dr. Swarkar Sharma, Dr. Sadaf Shah, and Dr. Veenet Tyagi for evaluating the presentations.
The Conclave ended with a vote of thanks presented by Dr. Simran Preet Kaur & Dr. Ranbir Kaur.

Jammu, Sept 21: Knowing that the ability to communicate in multiple languages is becoming more and more important in the increasingly integrated global business community, the School of Languages & Literature at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University started a certificate course in French. A qualified French researcher (NET-JRF), namely Mr. Chanda Vishwas from Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Banaras, has been appointed for this purpose who will stay on campus for three months, reported Dr. Amitabh V. Dwivedi, Head, School of Languages & Literature. Considering that, language impacts the daily lives of members, a huge number of participants applied for the course, including B. Tech. Students, MA & PhD Students, Faculty & Staff Members and their kids. Further, Dr. Dwivedi informed that weekly tests would be conducted to tap the progress of the students, and accordingly the students would move from basic certificate to advance, based on their performance. Dr. Sanjeev Jain, the Vice-Chancellor, believes that intelligence and mental capacity of bilinguals is more than mono linguals. Also, he wishes that SMVDU students should learn foreign languages so that they will be successful entrepreneurs, doctors, scientists, engineers, or whatever influential job they choose in this globalised world.

Jammu, Sept 20: Following the mantra of “empowering women, empowering India” and taking a jibe from “Beti Bacho Beti Padhao”, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University has recently started a scholarship, namely “Shakti” through which performing & outstanding girls students of the B Tech program will be awarded with financial assistance for further studies.
Notably, Dr. Ramesh Jolly & Ms. Irene Jolly provided funds for this family scholarship, who visited the university and presented the first Certificate of Scholarships to the two girl students, namely Ms. Harshita Anand, B.Tech. (Biotechnology) & Ms. Saloni Seth, B.Tech. (CSE).The students were awarded with the scholarship based on their performance in December, 2017-May, 2018 semester in the presence of Dr. Sanjeev Jain, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor; Dr. V.K.Bhat, Registrar; Dr. Rakesh Kumar Jha, Associate Dean (R&D); Mr. Vinod Sharma, Administrative Officer & Mr. Samir Vohra, Assistant Registrar(Academic Affairs). Dr Nirmal hails India’s cultural, religious legacy
KATRA, JUNE 01: A two Day National Seminar on “Socio-Cultural Impact of Adi Shankaracharya: A Historical Perspective” jointly organized by Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR), New Delhi, in collaboration with the School of Philosophy & Culture (SoPC) began here at SMVD University.
The Chief Guest of the inaugural function was Prof Nirmal Singh, Speaker, Jammu & Kashmir Legislative Assembly.  
In his address to participating delegates, Dr Singh explained the relevance of Shankaracharya in the present perspective. He also threw light on cultural and religious heritage of India and its relevance in present day times.
The Chairperson of the session was Dr. Sanjeev Jain, Vice Chancellor, SMVD University who highlighted the importance of Vedic studies in the contemporary world.
In the key note addresses, Prof Rajneesh Kumar Shukla, Member Secretary ICHR and Dr Balmukund Pandey, Organizing Secretary Akhil Bhartiya Itihaas Sankalan Yojana stressed on the need to demystify Indian history and authenticate findings, which has flecked the greatness of our glorious past including Shakaracharya’s contribution.
  Prof Arvind P. Jamkhedkar, Chairman ICHR equated Shakaracharya’s reputation with Immanuel Kant in the West. Prof. Baidyanath Labh, Dean Faculty of Arts, University of Jammu, and academic advisor of the seminar, was also present at the inaugural session.
Dr. Anil K. Tewari, Head SoPC delivered the vote of thanks to organizers and participants. In this seminar, participants from all over the country will deliberate and discuss on social and cultural issues pertinent to philosophical findings of Adi Shankaracharya in the coming days.  The valedictory session of the Seminar is scheduled in the evening session of 02 June 2018.

SRINAGAR, MAY 21: Prof. Sanjeev Jain, Vice Chancellor, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, called on Governor N.N. Vohra, Chancellor of the University, at the Raj Bhavan today.
Prof. Jain briefed the Governor about the progress achieved in the past months in the academic, administrative and infrastructural development arenas and the initiatives presently underway.
Governor discussed with Prof. Jain the importance of systematic efforts being continued to attract the best persons to fill Faculty positions and, side by side, ensuring that there was no gap whatsoever in the quality of teaching and maintaining sharp focus on the implementation of relevant research projects.

Jammu, Apr 18: President Ram Nath Kovind, accompanied by First Lady Savita Kovind, on Wednesday arrived on a two-day visit to the winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir.
The President visited to the state to address the Sixth Convocation of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU) at Katra in Reasi district.
Jammu and Kashmir Governor N N Vohra, Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, Speaker Legislative Assembly Kavinder Gupta, Chairman Legislative Council Haji Anayat Ali, Deputy Chief Minister, Dr Nirmal Singh, Minister for Revenue Abdul Rehman Veeri, Minister for Cooperatives Chering Dorjay, Minister for PHE Sham Lal Choudhary and Minister for Food Civil Supplies an Consumer Affairs Zulfkar Ali received the President at the Technical Airport here on Wednesday morning.
Over 880 scholars will receive their degrees and merit certificates at the ceremony.
Founder and Chairman of Bharti Enterprises, Sunil Bharti Mittal and Chairman-cum-Managing Director, Munjal Auto Engineering Ltd, Sudhir Munjal will be conferred honorary Doctorate by SMVDU on the occasion.
A civic reception will also be held at Amar Mahal Lawns in Jammu city to honour the President on Wednesday evening.
He will be also meeting Chief Justice Ramalingam Sudhakar and other Judges of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court over breakfast here on Thursday. UNI

JAMMU, APRIL 14: Governor N.N. Vohra, Chancellor of the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, reviewed the progress of the various infrastructural development projects which are underway in the Campus. He visited the New Girls Hostel; Staff Residential Quarters and extension of the University’s Guest House. He also visited the Basohli Hostel to view the installation of the solar panels on the roof of the building. Governor directed urgent completion of the entire Solar Power project so that it is commissioned by the end of this month.
It is pertinent to note that this University has become the first Academic Campus in J&K to have a 900 Kilo Watt Solar Power Plant, a step initiated towards its becoming a ‘Green Campus’. Governor asked Vice Chancellor to enlarge the Solar Power Project to raise 2MW power, to fully cover the entire power requirement of the University.

Teachers granted 7thPay Commission scales and retirement age enhanced to 65 years


KAKRYAL, APRIL 13: The Executive Council of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU) which met here, discussed various important matters relating to the functioning of the institution. Chaired by Governor N. N. Vohra, the Council decided to enhance the retirement age of the teaching faculty to 65 years and approved grant of 7th Pay Commission scales to the teaching staff. To attract well known teachers to serve the University the Council also decided to grant Children Education Allowance and Performance linked awards to the Faculty.
The Council congratulated Prof. Sanjeev Jain,Vice-Chancellor, for the University attaining the 94th rank among all the Engineering Institutions of the country and for retaining its position among the top 150 Universities in the country in  the ranking assessment done under NIRF- 2018. It was noted that despite its young age the University has obtained better ranking than many NITs and IIITs.
The Council recorded appreciation on the University’s MBA programme becoming the University first accredited MBA program in J&K and for the University being included as a participating institution in Centralized Counselling for M.Tech (CCMT) 2018 and being brought under the Direct Admission of Students Abroad  (DASA) – 2018 programme.
VC informed the Council that faculty and students of the University were participating in quality international conferences and the number of research papers written by them has significantly increased. Chancellor expressed satisfaction that the University is harnessing the potential of on line learning mechanisms, especially Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) through SWAYAM and NPTEL and National Digital Library.
The Council appreciated various eco-friendly initiatives undertaken by the University to develop it as a green campus and becoming first Academic Campus in J&K to have a 900 Kilo Watt Solar Power Plant which will be commissioned on 30th April, 2018; encouraging the use of bicycles by students; usage of LED bulbs for street lighting and in the hostels and other buildings.
The Council approved conferring of Honoris Causa on Sh. Sunil Bharti Mittal, Founder and Chairman Bharti Enterprises Ltd. and Sh. Pawan Munjal, Chairman Hero Moto Corp Ltd.
On being apprised about the functioning of the SMVDU Technology Business Incubation Centre (TBIC) established in the University for encouraging the spirit of entrepreneurship among the people of the State, Chancellor observed that students from other States should be invited to join the TBIC and stressed the development of an ideal entrepreneurial ecosystem for boosting Start up culture in the State. He advised the VC to undertake a critical appraisal of all the Coys incubated so far in the TBIC and observed that he would very shortly convene a meeting of all VCs and Heads of Higher Education Institutions in the State for discussing and preparing a roadmap for promotion of entrepreneurship and Start-up Policies.
In order to incrementally and qualitatively enhance the academic environment of the University, the Council accorded ‘in principle’ approval to the Perspective Plan (2018-23) and urged the VC to implement a concrete Action Plan with regard to each and every aspect of the identified goals.

Lauds SMVDU for achieving ranking among top 100 Engineering Institutes
JAMMU, APRIL 4: Governor N.N. Vohra, Chancellor of the Kashmir and Jammu Universities, congratulated Prof. Khurshid Iqbal Andrabi and Prof. R.D. Sharma, Vice Chancellors of the Kashmir and Jammu Universities, respectively, for their Universities securing the 47th and 51st positions among the top 100 Universities in the country in the  ranking status assessed by Ministry of Human Resource Development under the National Institutional Ranking Framework, the results of which were announced yesterday.
Governor, who is also Chancellor of the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, congratulated Prof. Sanjeev Jain, Vice-Chancellor for his University being placed at the 94th rank among all the Engineering Institutes of the country. He commended the notable distinction of this University to being among the top 100 engineering institutes of the country within such a short span since its birth.
Governor advised the Faculty, students and staff of these three Universities to continue with their good work and vigorously endeavour to improve their standings at the future national and international assessments.

JAMMU, MARCH 07: Governor N.N. Vohra inaugurated the 54th Annual Conference of “The Indian Econometric Society (TIES)” at the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, Kakryal.
Dr. Hasseb A. Drabu, Finance Minister, Dr. Bibek Debroy, Chairman, Economic Advisory Council-PM and Member NITI Aayog, Prof. T.C.A. Anant, President TIES, and Prof. Sanjeev Jain, Vice-Chancellor, SMVDU participated in the inaugural function.
           Welcoming the delegates, Governor thanked TIES, which is one of the oldest and largest body of professional econometricians and quantitative economists, with members from all over India and abroad, for giving an opportunity to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University to host this important Conference.
           Highlighting the vital role being played by econometricians in supporting policy makers to formulate targeted schemes for the balanced growth and development of country the Governor stressed the importance of continually devising new and reliable methodologies for data collection.
           Governor observed that institutions of higher education must get involved in dealing with problems facing the people of the State and the region. He exhorted scholars and academicians to investigate, analyse and determine solutions for the varied serious problems facing the population and hoped that some of the participants could take up researches into some of the problems facing J&K e.g water and energy conservation, transport issues, effects of climate change, rural-urban relationship etc which would help the policy makers in evolving fruitful policies.
      Emphasising the crucial importance of establishing a dynamic relationship  between academia and policy makers,  Governor observed that if NITI Aayog,  in collaboration with local Universities, support  groups of young scholars to
 take up researches into various  State specific issues it would go a long way in optimising the utilisation of available resources.
       Dr. Drabu highlighted the importance of reliable data collection and converting this large amount of data into meaningful figures for usage by the planners. He appealed to the scholars to take up research projects in J&K for providing solutions to its problems and highlighting its achievements in various sectors.
Dr. Bibek Debroy, Chairman, Economic Advisory Council-PM and Member NITI Aayog, Prof. T.C.A. Anant, President TIES, spoke on various aspects of econometrics and its importance for development of the country.
