Darjeeling, Mar 13: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will inaugurate a two-day industrial meet here on Tuesday.
The inauguration ceremony will take place at 1400 hours. There will be sessions from 
1100 to 1500 ours on the second day. 
Ms Banerjee will be present on both the days. Finance Minister Dr Amit Mitra will also be present at the meet.
This is for the first time that such a meeting will take place in the Hills. The meet is 
aimed at promoting industries and developing the Darjeeling Hills as an industrial hub.
According to government officials, the Hills have immense potential in the eco-friendly sectors of IT, tourism, horticulture, agro industries, medicinal plants, food processing and education. UNI

Darjeeling/Siliguri, Oct 26: Kalimpong district and parts of Darjeeling town today wore a deserted look to mourn the custodial death of GJM councillor Barun Bhujel in a government-run hospital in Kolkata on Wednesday as BJP president Dilip Ghosh reiterated his demand for a CBI probe both into the death of Bhujel and the killing of West Bengal police sub-inspector Amitabh Mallick at Patlebas area on October 13. " We want Gorkhaland, Barun Bhujel amar rahe and Bimal Gurung zindabad, " rent the air as the pro-Gorkhaland supporters shouted slogans while offering khada ( traditional scurf) and flowers on the mortal of Barun Bhujel, whose body was driven to an ambulance on way to his home at Kalimpong. Barun Bhujel, a councillor of the Kalimpong municipality, and arrested on June 15/16 for alleged arson, died at SSKM hospital on Wednesday. The mourners wearing black badges hoisted black flag atop their houses to condole the death of Barun Bhujel, who was the councillor of Ward No 16 of the Kalimpong municipality. As the ambulance carrying Barun Bhujel body entered Kalijhora, the local people offered khada and flowers while others shouted slogans “Barun Bhujel Amar Rahos”. UNI

Darjeeling, Oct 23: The West Bengal police raided different hideouts in the hills and arrested two GJM leaders from Kalimpong last night for their alleged involvement in destroying government properties during the Gorkhaland agitation, police said today. GJM leader Ambar Bahadur Newar alias Dambar Pradhan (43), who has been accused of setting the NBSTC office afire during the agitation, was arrested from Kalimpong during a raid last night. Besides him, Police also arrested Sunjit Tsamang of Monsong, Kalimpong, who was involved in burning of the Monsong police camp during the agitation. The duo, the followers of Gorkha Janmukti Morcha president Bimal Gurung, has been taken to a local court for judicial production. UNI

 Darjeeling, Oct 17: GJM supremo Bimal Gurung and his 19 other associates have been booked under various charges, including sedition and murder, after West Bengal Police sub-inspector was gunned down near a riverbed at Patlebas area in Darjeeling recently. The fresh charges against the elusive Gorkha Janmukti Morcha leader have been framed after state DGP Surajit Kar Purkayasta's visit to some areas in Darjeeiing town's Chawkbazar area on Monday, where a powerful bomb, triggered by suspected pro-Gorkhaland activists, exploded two months ago. The fresh cases have been filed in Darjeeling Sadar police station against Gurung and his 19 other associates, who fled during a police raid on October 13 in which the SI was gunned down. The DGP said the situation was returning to normal in the hills with the cooperation of people and great job done by a very good team of police force. He said there have been tourists visiting the hills and in course of time more tourists will come here with the onset of winter. UNI

Darjeeling, Oct 14: The Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) has accused the Mamata Banerjee Government of hatching a 'conspiracy' to eliminate GJP supremo Bimal Gurung. In a letter to Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh yesterday, the GJM alleged that the Trinamool Congress Government in West Bengal was out to eliminate Bimal Gurung to end the statehood agitation and sought immediate Central intervention to convene a tripartite talk with invitation to Mr Gurung. Former chairman of Gorkha Territorial Administration (GTA) and GJM's central committee member Lopsang Lama in a letter to Mr Singh said the State Government was 'using' its policemen along with Central forces to eliminate Mr Gurung in a bid to stop the ongoing statehood agitation in the hills. The letter alleged that some 30/40 police vehicles with around 200 West Bengal police personnel, aided by Central forces, raided Patlebas and Tukvar at 0300 hours on Friday to arrest or eliminate Mr Gurung, " falsely implicated' under various Sections, including UAPA Act, sedition and other charges. The policemen also opened fire to scare away the innocent villagers and create a fear-psychosis among the people supporting the statehood agitation, the letter stated.  UNI

Darjeeling, Oct 13: Fresh spurt in violence rocked the hills of Darjeeling once again as a police officer and a civilian were killed and several injured in a clash between the government forces and Bimal Gurung-led Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) activists at Takvar area, police today said. The deceased police officer was identified as ASI Amitava Mallick and the identity of the Morcha supporter was being ascertained. According to police, on a specific information that Gurung was hiding in Lepcha Busty somewhere at Takvar, the force swooped down on the area only to face a barrage of bullets from the Gurung supporters. Police said locals also fired to shield Gurung to make good his escape, adding, however, he was still hiding around the same place. Police also stumbled upon a workshop in the same area, where arms were being manufactured. Immediately, clashes erupted between the Morcha supporters belonging to Gurung faction and policemen midnight last night. As per police confirmation, two casualties have been reported in cross-firing - one Morcha supporter and one Assistant Sub-inspector rank officer, Amitava Mallick. Cross firing was still on when the report came in. With this so far 12 people have fallen prey to violence since the fresh statehood agitation began on June 8 last, while killing of the police officer in the agitation was the first. UNI

Darjeeling/Siliguri, Sep 27: At last the denizens of the Hills of Darjeeling got a respite from the indefinite strike as life returned to normal from 6 AM this morning following lifting of the 104-day-old Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM)-sponsored shutdown in support of its demand of Gorkhaland. GJM supremo Bimal Gurung called off indefinite the shutdown on the 105th day today, responding to Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh's appeal after the latter directed the Central Home Decretary to convene a tripartite meeting within a fortnight on Darjeeling's various political and economic issues. In a recorded audio message, GJM president Bimal Gurung, evading arrest by West Bengal police following a lookout notice, last night declared the lifting of the indefinite strike from 6 AM today from an undisclosed location, said party spokesperson Jyoti Rai. Responding to the appeal, Mr Gurung in a recorded audio message called off the strike and said, " We must make a conducive atmosphere for the tripartite talk. " Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh asked the Union Home Secretary to convene a meeting of all three parties — Centre, West Bengal Government and the GJM— within a fortnight for discussion. UNI

Darjeeling /Siliguri, Sep 15: Violent attempts were being made to derail all out efforts of restoring normalcy in Darjeeling hills with reports of attacks on students and commuters in government and school buses pouring in as police fired teargas shells after batons failed to quell a rampaging mob at Kalimpong today, a night after Gorkha Janmukti Morcha chief Bimal Gurung's direction to his followers to enforce shutdown. Miscreants hurled stones on a vehicle carrying students from hostel to a nearby hospital for routine medical check-up. As the vehicle was passing on an almost empty road, some miscreants from uphill at Dambachak in Kalimpong pelted with stones damaging the car. However, the students have been rescued by the security forces to safe passage. This apart, two NBSTC buses carrying commuters from Siliguri to Kalimpong were attacked on NH 10 near Teesta. But the patrol police immediately swung into action and escorted the buses to the destination, where pro-Gurung supporters fought a pitched battle with the security forces, who were trying to restore order. The supporters attacked the uniformed men, who first used batons to disperse them. But when the mob turned berserk, police retaliated firing several teargas shells to quell them at Kalimpong bus terminus. UNI

Siliguri/Darjeeling Sep 13: The hills is gradually limping back to normal with two government buses carrying passengers today heading for uphill Darjeeling town from Siliguri, almost after three months of suspension of services, a day after yesterday's second round bipartite talk between West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the political parties operating in the hills, which stressed on restoration of normalcy. While two NBSTC ( North Bengal State Transport Corporation ) buses left this commercial town of Siliguri to traverse around 70 km uphill roads via Kursegong and are expected to return by evening with commuters, reports reaching here said the NBSTC buses were also plying at Mirik and Kalimpong. Sources said efforts were on with proper security arrangement to reopen some educational institutions at Mirik, which is comparatively returning to normal for the past few days. Immediately after the 90-minute all-party meet at Uttarkanya on Tuesday afternoon, Ms Banerjee announced that the government was keen on restoration of the public distribution system and urged all stake holders help the administration to bring peace and sanity in the hills, crippled for the past over three months following indefinite shutdown by the GJM (Gorkha Janmukti Morcha) demanding statehood for Gorkhas. Ms Banerjee told the meeting clearly that Darjeeling hills are part and parcel of West Bengal and it will remain so , but her government was for a permanent solution for Gorkhas and sought their suggestions. Meanwhile, GJM president Bimal Gurung, evading arrest, said from an undisclosed location that " not a single word was spoken regarding Gorkhaland in the all-party meeting " and threatened to launch " Janta Curfew ' to protest police atrocities against rallies in support of Gorkhaland demand. " Bandh not called by me, it was called by Binay Tamang, he has to clarify regarding this to people. I will call off the bandh only after tri-partite meeting for Gorkhaland starts," Mr Gurung said. " We want tri-partite talks at political level. We have our MP, MLAs. I am not in favour of calling off bandh, ' he stated. JAP president Dr Harka Bahadur Chhetri said, " We have requested Ms Banerjee to clarify her stand on Gorkhaland issue and we have also clarified from our side. " UNI

Sliguri/Darjeeling, Sep 12: Expectation is rife for a positive outcome from today's second round of government-sponsored meeting to put an end to the current stalemate in Darjeeling crippling life for over three months since June 8. The meeting, to be chaired by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at Uttarayan in Siliguri, would involve all the political parties operating in the hills. During the August 29 talk at Nabanna, Ms Banerjee made it clear that the statehood issue was not under the jurisdiction of the State Government even as at the same time she acknowledged that any political party could raise such issue democratically. Ms Banerjee said her government was keen on restoring normalcy in the hills first and subsequently would take up other issues, adding people have been forced to starve following the indefinite shutdown bringing all economic and social activities to a grinding halt for the past three moths. Meanwhile, the Gorkha National Liberation Front (GNLF) yesterday issued a statement, saying its nine-member delegation, headed by president Mann Ghishing, would attend the second round of dialogue., It said the government has invited the GNLF to attend the meeting as it did in the first on August 29 at Nabanna.  UNI

Darjeeling, Sep 12: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today going to hold the second round crucial meeting of all political parties operating in Darjeeling hills at the north Bengal secretariat, Uttarkanya on the current unrest crippling life for the past three months since June 8. The Gorkha National Liberation Front (GNLF) yesterday issued a statement, saying its nine-member delegation, headed by president Mann Ghishing, would attend the second round of dialogue, scheduled to be held from 1500 hours here. It said the government has invited the GNLF to attend the meeting as it did in the first on August 29 at Nabanna . Meanwhile, pro-Bimal Gurung faction of the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) named a six-member delegation, including three MLAs, to attend the government-sponsored all-party meeting. Darjeeling MLA Amar Rai, Kalimpong MLA Sarita Rai,and Kurseong MLA Rohit Sharma, besides Kalimpong Municipality Chairman Subha Pradhan, Morcha central committee leaders R B Bhujel and Saugat Thapa will be attending the meeting. Gorkha Janmukti Morcha assistant secretary Jyoti Kumar Rai said, " The central committee has decided to send six-member delegation to the meeting today in the state all party meeting." Expelled GJM leader Anit Thapa also said they got invitation from the government and send seven members for the meeting. Both Binoy Tamang and Anit Thapa, the expelled from the GJM, would attend the meeting as GJM the representatives. Jan Andolan Party (JAP) leader Harka Bahadur Chettri, who attended the first meeting, is expected to attend the meeting along with some other members. Throughout the course of impasse in the Hills, the chief minister has led untiring efforts in bringing normalcy back in the region. She has time and again stressed on holding dialogues. The first meeting towards solving the issues was held a few weeks back at the State Secretariat, Nabanna. It had a very positive outcome, and provided the impetus for the second meeting to be held today. UNI

Darjeeling, Sep 02: Tension ran high in Kalimpong town today after hundreds of Bimal Gurung's followers assembled preparing for a rally with the body of driver Dawa Bhutia, allegedly shot dead during crossfiring at Sadam, Sikkim, even as police arrested 14 GJM leaders from Majitar in Sikkim and brought them to Phansidewa police station to produce them in court at Siliguri later in the day. In the latest crackdown on the GJM leadership, police also arrested former Kuseong municipality chief Krishna Pradhan and Norman Thapa, the latter accused of setting afire Kalimpong forest guest house recently. Meanwhile, the indefinite shutdown, which entered the 82nd day, continued to paralyse life across Darjeeling hills with shops, offices and business establishments havingdowned their shutters responding to the strike for statehood in Darjeeling hills. The people in general rejected the appeal of GJM assistant general secretary Binay Tamang to suspend strike for 12 days up to the next government-sponsored meeting to be held on September 12 at Siliguri. The pro-Bimal Gurung supporters now seeking the head of Tamang, whose house was basically now fortified with the armed security forces as he virtually stayed home for the past three nights. The statehood struggle has now spilled into neighbouring state of Sikkim, which has filed a case under Section 302/34 IPC against Kalimpong SP Ajiit Singh Yadav and his police team for alleged intrusion by West Bengal police on Friday, a report from Gangtok said today. Sikkim also allegedly prevented Bengal police from taking into custody six GJM leaders, who have been arrested along with 14 others from Majitar near Namchi in south Sikkim, claiming the Bengal police violated territorial jurisdiction. The arrested were Sanjit Tamang, Raju Biswakarma, Dawa Lama, Anil Kr Gupta, Shankar Adhikary, Hemanta Goutam, Ganesh Sharma, Sidhant Adhikary, Arjun Ghimray, Buddhaprasad Sharma, Milan Pradhan, Saran Thapa, Keshab Nirala and Krishna Limbu. The Sikkim police had also allegedly seized three police vehicles of Kalimpong police station. A latest report said Bengal police could get back the six arrested GJM leaders only after the Sikkim court order. West Bengal police allegedly cracked down on the GJM leaders before they could meet in the scheduled central committee meeting at Majitar, which could have ratified the expulsion of Tamang and Anit Thapa and on the future of indefinite shutdown. West Bengal police issued lookout notice in the name of Bimal Gurung, Prakash Gurung and Roshan Giri. UNI


Darjeeling, Aug 25: Close on the heels of yesterday's explosion at Sukhiapokhari Police Station, an abortive attempt was made to blow up the Peshok bridge near Teesta Bazar, even as the GMCC leadership was busy would hold a meeting at Chitre later today to pick up delegates for representing Darjeeling Hills for peace talk at Nabanna on August 29 to be chaired by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Reinforcement and forensic experts visited the site of explosion, which was triggered at the wee hours today. It was close to Peshok bridge (iron and concrete) linking Teesta Bazar with Darjeeling. However, there was no damage to the bridge, also linking Lamahatta, a tourist spot. Local people heard the explosion around 0130 hours and informed local police, which immediately inspected the area and called for reinforcement of combat forces. The bomb experts visited the site and collected samples for ascertaining the nature of the explosives. The explosion was the fourth in seven days after Darjeeling and Kalimpong Police Station, and 24 hours after Sukhiapokhari police station. In the Kalimpong blast, a Civic Volunteer was killed and two others were injured on August 20. UNI


Darjeeling/Kolkata, Aug 21 : GJM leader Niraj Pradhan has been arrested for various charges amid prevailing tense situation across Darjeeling hills even as the Gorkhaland Movement Coordination Committee (GMCC) sought the NIA probe into the grenade attack at Kalimpong police station and mainstream oppositions - CPI(M) and Congress - demanded immediate convention of a tripartite meeting along with the Union government to resolve unrest in Darjeeling. Former Ward no 8 councilor and GJM leader Niraj Pradhan has been arrested from Kurseong last night for various charges, including damaging police vans and assaulting the government employees during the ongoing movement for statehood for Gorkhas. However, after two successive blasts on Friday and Saturday in Darjeeling and Kalimpong, the Sunday was relatively peace with indefinite shut down entered 69 days. GMCC convenor Kalyan Dewan alleged that some vested interest parties were behind the blasts to frustrate the peaceful negotiation on Gorkhaland issue. CPI(M) state secretary Surya Kanta Mishra in a statement demanded immediate convention of a tripartite talk to resolving the unrest before the situation went out of hand. Mr Mishra also opined that if the Trinamool Congress government that situation would become complicated if it resorted to repression rather than following the peaceful negotiable settlement. He said that if the Union government and the state go on delaying the tri-partite talk then the situation would go more complication to handle it. Mr Mishra opined that all the stake holders should without any condition should sit together find out an amicable situation in Darjeeling. Congress leader Pradeep Bhattacharya has demanded that state Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee should immediately convene an all parties meeting on volatile Darjeeling unrest for resolving the ongoing impasse. Rajya Sabha member Mr Bhattacharya while demanding immediate an all parties meeting should be convened by the CM and at the same time the state government should start negotiation with the Gorkha leaders for a peaceful solution to the current unrest in Darjeeling Hills. He also opined that the Union government should also take necessary steps for resolving the trouble of Darjeeling. Slamming the state government for present unrest in Darjeeling, BJP leader Dilip Ghosh alleged that the state government was politicising and adopting a vendetta by filing cases against GJM leader Bimal Gurung and others in blast cases. Mr Ghosh said actually chief minister Mamata Banerjee did not want any negotiation on Darjeeling issue, otherwise she should have delegated authorities/ representatives through government officials or ministers, who could be approached by the Gorkha leaders. "Only she talks about negotiation in public meeting and in Assembly but actually she is politicising the issue and adopting vendetta by filing cases against the Gorkha leaders," Mr Ghosh said. Mr Ghosh demanded the CBI or NIA probe into the blast in Darjeeling and hand grenade charge at Kalimpong police station saying the people of the state had no faith with the state police and the present government. Police police booked Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) supremo Bimal Gurung and four others under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act for their alleged that involvement in the blast and explosion. UNI
