Srinagar, May 19: Security forces foiled “ Lal Chowk Challo” called by separatists on Saturday when Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to lay foundation and inaugurate developmental projects in Jammu and Kashmir.
All roads leading to historic Lal Chowk, the nerve centre of the summer capital, have been closed with barbed wire by security forces and state police since this morning.
Hundreds of security forces have been deployed in the area to prevent people from assembling there. However, the nearby Moulana Azad road and Budshah chowk were open though large number of security forces and state police personnel remained deployed on both sides of the road to prevent any untoward incident.
Mirwaiz was taken into preventive custody when he defied house arrest restrictions and stepped out of his Nigeen house to lead a march to Lal Chowk. Police personnel present near his house immediately took Mirwaiz into custody and later lodged him in police station Nigeen.
Police also arrested another senior hurriyat leader Hilal Ahmad War when he tried to march towards Lal Chowk in the Civil Lines. Yaseen Malik is already under detention while Syed Ali Shah Geelani remained under house arrest. UNI

Srinagar, May 19: Curfew-like restrictions were imposed in downtown besides some areas in civil lines and old city in Srinagar as a precautionary measure in view of the 'Lal Chowk Challo' called by separatists on Saturday to protest Prime Minister Narendera Modi's visit to the Kashmir valley.
The main gates of historic Jamia Masjid, stronghold of moderate Hurriyat Conference (HC) Mirwaiz Moulvi Omar Farooq, were closed again as a precautionary measure to prevent any demonstrations.
Police said restrictions under Section 144 CrPC have been imposed in the areas falling under five stations of M R Gunj, Khanyar, Safa Kadal, Rainwari and Nowhatta since this morning to maintain law and order. Similarly, restrictions have also been imposed in some areas under police station Kralkhud in old city and Maisuma in civil lines.
However, the situation on the ground was entirely different as security forces and state police personnel deployed in large numbers have closed all roads with barbed wire, directing people to remain indoors.
All roads leading to Jamia Masjid were closed with barbed wire at several places, including Rangar stop, Hawal and Gojwara and by parking bulletproof vehicles in the middle. Security forces and police could also be seen deployed in the Jamia market.
The entire Nallahmar road wore a deserted look with only security forces and state police personnel, wearing bulletproof jackets and leg-guards and holding automatic weapons and lathis in their hands, implementing restrictions. Security forces had closed the road at Nawa Kadal, Rajouri Kadal, Gojwara, Malaratta, Bohri Kadal and Khanyar with barbed wire. Bulletproof vehicles were also deployed on bylanes to prevent any movement.
People living on both sides of the Nallahmar alleged that they were not being allowed to move out of their houses by the security forces.
Similar restrictions have also been imposed in Khanyar, Rainawari and Malkha. However, the people were being allowed to go to Jawahar Lal Nehru Memorial hospital, Rainawari. However, the main road to S K Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) via Eidgah was open though only patients and para medical staff were being allowed. However, the road was closed in the morning for some time after security forces had to burst teargas shells to disperse demonstrators at Safa Kadal.

Bund road made vehicle free, work in full swing on Zero Bridge-Rambagh corridor


          SRINAGAR, NOVEMBER 01: In keeping with the initiative to make The Bund, Lal Chowk pedestrian-only road, Minister for Public Works Naeem Akhtar and Minister for Education Altaf Bukhari today personally started the blockage of all vehicle plying or parking on the historic road.
            The Ministers who were on a day-long tour of Amira Kadal constituency said that the Bund has its rich historical legacy and government will take steps in a phased manner to restore its glory. Akhtar directed the officials to develop the Bund road completely edge to edge all along the Abdullah Bridge to Old Zero Bridge. The Minister also directed to remove the encroachments and parked vehicles from the Bund. He said that the Jhelum embankment will be developed and further improved upon with new parks.
            At Abi Guzar, the Ministers directed the officials to construct a washroom block for the locals and shopkeepers. Taking strong note of disarray at the vacant plot of land at Lambert Lane, the Ministers directed the Deputy Commissioner Srinagar to clean the entire area and explore its possibility to be used as a parking spot.
            The Ministers directed the concerned officials complete the removal of all silt accumulated near banks at the earliest. The Minister expressed their displeasure at a huge wall being erected on the side of Handloom office on Bund and said that the same should be designed in a way that entire park is visible from Bund. The work on the further construction of the wall was immediately halted.
            The Minister also directed the officials to develop the path under the new zero bridge so that the upgraded Bund road is taken upto old Zero bridge.
            Later the Minister also reviewed the work going on the Zero Bridge-Rambagh toad project project. They expressed the satisfaction at the pace of work. Akhtar said that the road will go a long way in easing the traffic woes in the city as it will provide a useful alternate road. It was decided that the compensation or alternate land for the displaced families will also be resolved at the earliest.

The Ministers were accompanied by Deputy Commissioner Srinagar, Chief Engineer R&B, I&FC and other officials.

All road blocks put up in the downtown and SeK have been lifted and traffic was plying on all routes normally today. Srinagar, Aug 4 :  Security forces burst teargas shells after repeated lathicharge had no impact on demonstrators in Anantnag, where a Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) militant and a civilian were killed this morning. The trouble started at several places in the town, including Lal Chowk, Malakhnag, Chinni Chowk, Reshi Bazaar, Sherpora, Janglat Mandi and Achabal bus adda, when people, mostly youths hit the streets and started pelting stones on security forces deployed there. Security forces resorted to lathicharge which was followed by bursting of teargas shells to chase away the demonstrators who were pelting stones. Several people, including some security personnel, were injured in the clashes, which were continuing when the reports last came in. Business and other activities remained paralysed with shops and business establishments remaining closed and traffic off the roads. The District Magistrate (DM), Anantnag has already closed all the educational institutions while mobile internet has also been suspended. UNI


Srinagar, Jul 31 :  Several government employees were taken into preventive custody today by police after they staged a protest in this summer capital, demanding removal of pay disparity and anomaly. Raising slogans in favour of their demands, scores of the members of Jammu Kashmir and Ladakh All Departments Clerical Staff Association hit the street at Press Enclave here today. However, when they tried to take out a protest march to Lal Chowk, security forces deployed in the area stopped them from moving ahead. As the protestors did not back down, security forces took several JKLADCSA members into preventive custody. UNI

2 Heritage schools to be retrofitted with the help of IIT Madras on pilot basis
SRINAGAR, JUNE 22: Minister for Education, Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari today stressed on preservation of Lal Chowks historic legacy by evolving a comprehensive redevelopment plan that is in sync with its heritage values.
The Minister made these remarks during a meeting convened to discuss urban renewal streetscape improvements in Lal Chowk.
          The meeting was attended by Dr Farooq Ahmad Lone, DC Srinagar, Fayaz Ahmad Khan, Chief Town Planner, Joint Commissioner SMC, SSP Traffic, Conservation Architect Ms. Gurmeet S Rai and other senior officers from SDA and SMC.
Bukhari said Srinagar city is unfortunately riddled with a plethora of issues ranging from traffic and transportation to urban design and its aesthetics.
He emphasized on a comprehensive redevelopment plan that takes care of large scale public consultations besides focussing on urban design, aesthetics, skyline, convenience and safety.
During the meeting a number of conservation proposals for heritage conservation and streetscape improvements were discussed threadbare.
                An elaborated discussion was held on traffic and transport management, preserving old heritage buildings and other related issues keeping in view the Master Plan for the Srinagar city.
A multimedia presentation was made by Ms Gurmeet S Rai about how the different countries worked on these conservation projects and achieved the positive results therein. She said that there is a need to involve people in taking any initiative regarding conservation program in any city.
          The Minister asked her to make a formal proposal and a detailed presentation for the improvement in Lal Chowk which will be later presented before Chief Minister, Ms Mehbooba Mufti who is keen on restoration of pristine glory of the Srinagar city.
 Later, Bukhari chaired a separate meeting convened to discuss the retrofitting of heritage school buildings in Kashmir.
During the meeting a number of conservation proposals for heritage buildings housing schools in both urban and rural Kashmir were discussed threadbare.
The meeting was attended by DC Srinagar, Directors of School Education (Kashmir), RMSA, SSA, Additional Secretary School Education, Senior Professor of IIT Madras, Dr Arun Menon   and conservation Architect Ms Gurmeet S Rai.
          Two government schools one in Fateh Kadal in Srinagar and another in Kupwara which were already agreed to be undertaken as a pilot project where in Ms Gurmeet Rai was asked to make a proper proposal and the budget plan for the retrofitting of these two schools.
          The National Centre for Safety of Heritage Structures (NCSHS) in IIT Madras, and department of civil engineering would be engaged in this project.
                Bukhari asked the architects that these schools should set examples as for as the preservation of heritage is concerned and assured an extension in the project only after satisfactory results.
He said that the school conservation and retrofitting project would be the first project of its kind to develop retrofitting guidelines for Taq buildings in Kashmir.
It was informed that local technical institutions like NIT, Srinagar would also participate in this project. Traditional craftsmen would also be engaged in the process for mutual learning and integration of traditional knowledge system with modern scientific processes and knowhow in the valley. 
It was informed that it is the process of making old and weak buildings safe from earthquake and other risks.  It is a scientifically proven way for saving old structures and traditional construction practices of the region, observed Dr Menon.

          Bukhari said that the Government of Jammu and Kashmir has been supporting the rehabilitation of schools affected by the devastating 2014 floods, and is extending the efforts to improve school infrastructure housed in dilapidated buildings in downtown Srinagar and other parts of the valley. 

SRINAGAR, MAY 17: Minister of State for Forest, Environment, Animal and Sheep Husbandry, Cooperatives and Fisheries, Mir Zahoor Ahmad, today visited Cooperative Super Bazaar at Lal Chowk Srinagar to take stock of its functioning.
          Secretary Cooperative Department, Bashir Ahmad Bhat, Managing Director State Road Transport Corporation (SRTC) and other officers of Cooperative Department and SRTC accompanied the Minister.
           On the occasion, Mir Zahoor underscored the need of face lifting of the Cooperative Super Bazaar and said that the business unit is not only profit making unit and a source of supplying essential consumer goods to the public at reasonable rates.
         The Minister was apprised that the Cooperative Super Bazaar has sold Rs 7.41 crore worth consumer goods including departmental sale and earned a net profit of Rs 22.86 lakh during 2016-17, while as it sold Rs 1.83 crore worth consumer goods and earned a net profit of Rs 6.97 lakh during the current fiscal up to ending April.
            While visiting various business counters of household goods, stationary, electric, furniture, and others within the Complex of Super Bazaar, he was briefed by the officials about the working of the business unit and the products available for the buyers at discount rates. He was told that people can benefit by availing discount ranging from 5 to 50 percent on various goods at the Bazaar.
          He expressed satisfaction over the working of the Super Bazaar. He appealed general public to visit Super Bazaar and avail the benefits being offered to the consumers by the Cooperative Department.
            During the visit, detailed discussions were held on rent assessment wherein the Minister directed the Cooperative Department to hold a meeting with SRTC and R&B Department and prepare revised rent assessment report.

He also interacted with the employees of the unit who projected their demands. The Minister gave them a patient hearing and assured them that their genuine demands will be looked into.   He asked the concerned to work with utmost dedication and honesty and directed them to provide quality products and ensure availability of sufficient stock of goods to make the unit a success and more profitable one.
