Srinagar, Apr 2: Curfew-like restrictions have been imposed in the Shehar-e-Khas (SeK), downtown and parts of old city and civil lines in Srinagar as precautionary measure to prevent any law and order problem.
The restrictions were imposed as precautionary measure following a strike call given by separatists in protest against killing of four civilians in security force action and 13 militants in three separate encounters in south Kashmir on Sunday. Three Army jawans were martyred in the encounters. Over 50 civilians were also injured in the clashes near the encounter sites.
The main gates of historic Jamia Masjid, stronghold of chairman of moderate Hurriyat Conference (HC), Mirwaiz Moulvi Omar Farooq, have been closed to foil any demonstration.
Police said restrictions under section 144 CrPC have been imposed in the areas falling under the jurisdiction of police station M R Gunj, Nowhatta, Safa Kadal, Khanyar and Rainwari in the downtown and SeK. Restrictions have also been imposed in parts of areas under police station of Maisuma in civil lines and Kralkhud in old city.
However, the situation on the ground was entirely different as security forces and state police personnel deployed in the downtown and SeK were directing people to remain indoors. The entire Nallahmar road, which otherwise remains busy, has been closed for traffic or pedestrian movement. Security forces have closed the road with barbed wire and by parking bullet proof vehicles in the middle at different places, including Tarabal, Nawa Kadal, Kawdara, Rajouri Kadal, Ali Kadal and Khanyar.
People in these areas alleged that they were not being allowed to move out of their houses by the security forces deployed after every ten feet. “The milkmen and vegetable sellers could not come from outskirts due to restrictions. The local bread makers also could not open their shops,” Mutahir Ahmad, a resident of Nawa Kadal told.
The road to S K Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) from Safa Kadal and Eidgah was open though medical staff and patients only were being allowed to move.
All roads leading to Jamia Masjid were closed at Rangar stop, Nowhatta and Hawal to prevent people from assembling and organise protests at worship place. All main gates of the Masjid remained closed since this morning. Similar restrictions had been imposed in other areas of down town and SeK.
Roads leading to Maisuma, stronghold of JKLF, have also been closed and hundreds of security forces personnel deployed in the area to strictly implement restrictions.
Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL), comprising Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Moulvi Omar Farooq and Mohammad Yasin Malik, has called for a strike on Monday against the killing of civilians and militants. UNI

Srinagar, Nov 18: Separatist leader Mohammad Yasin Malik was arrested on Saturday morning while chairman of moderate Hurriyat Conference (HC) Mirwaiz Moulvi Omar Farooq was put under house arrest since late Friday night.
There was also no relief for chairman of hardline HC Syed Ali Shah Geelani who remained under house arrest for the past several months. A spokesman for the JKLF said team of security forces arrested Malik from his Maisuma residence near here this morning. He said Malik was later shifted to central jail, Srinagar. Meanwhile, a spokesman for the HC said a large number of security forces and state police have been deployed outside the Nigeen house of Mirwaiz since last night. He said the chairman of the HC has been informed that he cannot leave since he has been put under house arrest. Though no reason was given for putting him under house arrest by the administration, it is believed that there was apprehension of protests in Srinagar following death of a militant, a resident of down town, in an encounter in Zakoora area in the city outskirts last evening. A police Sub Inspector was also killed in the encounter and a Special Police Officer ( SPO) was injured. A suspected militant was also arrested on the spot during the encounter. UNI

Both the factions of the Hurriyat Conference (HC) and Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF), spearheading the agitation demanding right to self determination, had called for a general strike today against the visit of Mr Singh, who arrived here on September 9 on a four-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir. The train service has become very popular among the passengers, particularly daily travellers and those travelling from Jammu to Srinagar, who prefer boarding train from Banihal. The service is being considered safe, fast and economical. In the past, railways suffered heavy damage to property, including stations and tracks due to violence. Last year the train service remained suspended for about six months due to summer unrest in the valley.UNI

Srinagar, Aug 2 : Jammu and Kashmir police will be approaching Pakistan High Commission (HC) in New Delhi through the Union Home Ministry to take back the body of most wanted Lashker-e-Toiba (LeT) militant Abu Dujana, who was killed along with another militant in an encounter in Pulwama in south Kashmir. "We are approaching Pak HC to take back the body of Dujana so that his parents and other family members could see him before burial," Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kashmir, Munir Ahmad Khan said. However, he added if the HC refused to take the body, he (Dujana) will be given proper burial here. The IGP said that Pak HC has been approached to claim the body of Dujana, who belonged to Gilgit-Baltistan in POK. However, the house owner where Dujana was hiding at the time of encounter yesterday said he (Dujana) had told them that he was from Karachi in Pakistan.
