Srinagar, May 19: Security forces foiled “ Lal Chowk Challo” called by separatists on Saturday when Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to lay foundation and inaugurate developmental projects in Jammu and Kashmir.
All roads leading to historic Lal Chowk, the nerve centre of the summer capital, have been closed with barbed wire by security forces and state police since this morning.
Hundreds of security forces have been deployed in the area to prevent people from assembling there. However, the nearby Moulana Azad road and Budshah chowk were open though large number of security forces and state police personnel remained deployed on both sides of the road to prevent any untoward incident.
Mirwaiz was taken into preventive custody when he defied house arrest restrictions and stepped out of his Nigeen house to lead a march to Lal Chowk. Police personnel present near his house immediately took Mirwaiz into custody and later lodged him in police station Nigeen.
Police also arrested another senior hurriyat leader Hilal Ahmad War when he tried to march towards Lal Chowk in the Civil Lines. Yaseen Malik is already under detention while Syed Ali Shah Geelani remained under house arrest. UNI

Srinagar, Apr 2: Chairmen of both the factions of Hurriyat Conference (HC) Syed Ali Shah Geelani and Mirwaiz Moulvi Omar Farooq were placed under house arrest, while JKLF chief Mohammad Yaseen Malik was detained on Monday morning in the summer capital, Srinagar.
The move by the administration comes in view of strike called by separatists against the killing of four civilians in security force action and 13 militants in three separate encounters in south Kashmir on Sunday. Three Army jawans were martyred in the encounters. Over 50 civilians were also injured in the clashes near the encounter sites.
Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL), comprising Geelani, Mirwaiz and Malik, has called for a strike on Monday against the killing of civilians and militants.
“Mr Geelani was again placed under house arrest on Sunday evening at his Hyderpora residence in the uptown, where security forces were deployed to prevent him from coming out,” a hardline HC spokesperson said.
The hardline HC chairman was released on March 30 after remaining under house arrest for about eight years. The development had come just a day after Director General of Police (DGP) S P Vaid said that Geelani, Mirwaiz and Malik were free to go anywhere they wish to. Dr Vaid, however, had said the trio should not make 'anti-national' speeches or create a law and order problem.
A spokesman for the moderate HC on Monday said a large number of security forces and state police personnel were deployed outside the Nigeen house of the Mirwaiz on Sunday evening.
