Bhopal, Mar 24  :   The number of COVID-19 cases in Madhya Pradesh went up to eight on Tuesday after a man tested positive for the coronavirus in Gwalior, an official said.

Earlier, six COVID-19 cases were reported from Jabalpur, while a woman was found positive for the viral infection in Bhopal on Sunday.

On Tuesday, a 36-year-old man tested positive for the coronavirus in Gwalior, the state health department's additional secretary Sapna Lowanshi told.

The man returned to his home in Gwalior last week from Khajuraho in Chhattarpur district, and possibly might have come in contact with some foreign tourists there, sources said.

The condition of all coronavirus patients in the state was stable, Lowanshi said.

In a related development, the Madhya Pradesh government, through an order, reserved the Bhopal Memorial Hospital and Research Centre to treat COVID19 patients.

Bhopal, Mar 20 :  Madhya Pradesh Governor Lalji Tandon on Friday accepted the resignation of Chief Minister Kamal Nath.

Nath had submitted his resignation to the governor at the Raj Bhawan here around 1 pm on Friday.

"The governor accepted the resignation of Kamal Nath and asked him to continue as the caretaker chief minister till the new CM takes charge," a Raj Bhawan official told.

Nath's move of stepping down as the CM came a day after the Supreme Court directed that a floor test be conducted in Madhya Pradesh Assembly to prove that the Congress government led by him enjoys majority in the House following the rebellion by 22 MLAs of his party.

The Nath government had been teetering on the brink of a collapse after 22 Congress MLAs rebelled and resigned in support of Jyotiraditya Scindia, who had quit the grand old party and joined the BJP.

USD 5 trillion economy goal difficult, not impossible: Gadkari


Indore (MP), Jan 18 :  Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said on Saturday that the goal of making India a USD 5 trillion economy by 2024 was "difficult but not impossible".

It can be achieved by increasing domestic production and reducing dependence on imports, he said at the 29th International Management Conclave of the Indore Management Association here.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other BJP leaders have often spoken about the goal of turning India into a USD 5 trillion economy by 2024.

"Strong political will is very important to achieve any goal. Manifesting the same will, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has set ourselves the goal of making the country a USD 5 trillion economy," Gadkari said.

"This goal is difficult but not impossible," he added.

"Our country has plenty of resources and production capacity. Despite that we are spending crores every year on importing goods like medicines, medical devices, coal, copper, papers, etc," the Union minister said.

"If we want to become a USD 5 trillion economy, we have to increase the domestic production of these things instead of importing them," he said.

Referring to the current economic slowdown, Gadkari said, "We are the fastest growing economy in the world. But there is a cycle in the business. Challenges crops up, at times due to the global economy and sometimes because of a gap in demand and supply.

"But I see India's future in the leaders of younger generation who can turn difficulties and challenges into opportunities," Gadkari said.

There was no dearth of capital, resources and technology in the country, "but there is definitely a lack of right vision and leadership in different fields", he said.

Exports will be encouraged by focusing on increasing the participation of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in the development, the minister said.

"This will help create five crore new jobs....The government is asking every department what it can contribute to achieve the target of USD 5 trillion economy," Gadkari added.

Indore, Jun 12 :  Confusion prevailed at the BJP- controlled Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) when the recital of the national anthem 'Jana gana mana' was abruptly stopped by its members on Wednesday for singing of 'Vande Mataram'.

A video clip of the incident has gone viral on social media here, in which Mayor Malini Gaud, who is also a local BJP MLA, is also visible.

According to the eyewitnesses, the elected representatives and others present at the civic body's budget session the national anthem was being sung at the outset of the . However, after a few seconds some of the members abruptly stopped singing the national anthem and instead started singing 'Vande mataram', which they sang it till the end.

Corporators belonging to the opposition parties sought action against members for "insulting" the national anthem.

When contacted, IMC chairman Ajay Singh Naruka said, "The mistake was possibly committed following a corporator's slip of the tongue. I don't feel it was due to anybody's ill intention. So, the incident should not be blown up unnecessarily." 

Seeking to downplay the incident, he said that according to the tradition, the IMC's budget session kicks off with the recital of national song and ends with the national anthem.

According to sources, deliberately disrupting the national anthem or stopping its recital midway invites three years of imprisonment.                            [Agencies]

Bhopal, Mar 29 :  After announcing candidature of senior leader Digvijaya Singh from Bhopal, which the Congress has not won since 1989, the party is mulling fielding prominent leaders from other seats like Vidisha and Indore, where it has not tasted success for last 15 years or more.

Bhopal is considered a tough seat for the Congress along with Indore, Vidisha, Bhind and Damoh as the BJP has not lost in these constituencies since 1989 but the Congress is hoping to build on the recent victory in Assembly polls to dislodge the saffron party here.

Apart from these five, there are nine other seats out of the total 29 Lok Sabha constituencies where the Congress has not won during the 15-year BJP rule in the state.

Chief Minister Kamal Nath has represented Chhindwara ten times including six times in a row while senior party leader and Congress general secretary for Uttar Pradesh (West) Jyotiradiya Scindia has been winning from Guna since 2002. These were the only two seats out of 29 won by the Congress in the 2014 Lok Sabha election which was swept by the BJP.

"The party will definitely field senior leaders in seats like Indore and Vidisha which it has not won since 1989," Madhya Pradesh Congress spokesman Pankaj Chaturvedi told. 

"Like Assembly polls, our party this time has sought opinions of ground level workers from mandal, block and district to finalise the best candidate who can win from those seats where the party has not won for long," he said.

"The party had done similar experiment during assembly polls also and had got best results and the same is expected in Lok Sabha polls also because of anti-Modi sentiment in the country," he said.

The Congress' decision to field former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Digvijaya Singh from Bhopal has already raised the political temperature in the state.

Soon after Singh's candidature was announced, Ajay Singh, former leader of opposition and close confidant of Digvijaya Singh, demanded that the party should field other senior leaders from tough seats like Indore and Vidisha.

Without taking the name of any particular leader, he told that "the party has a very tall leader in Chambal Gwalior region and he should be fielded from other tough seats like Indore and Vidisha".

He was apparently referring to Congress general secretary and Guna MP, Jyotiraditya Scindia. Kamal Nath, Digvijaya Singh and Scindia have been leading rival factions in the party's state unit.

The BJP has not yet decided its candidate in Bhopal and there is speculation that former chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan may be pitted against Digvijaya Singh. In 2003 also, Chouhan had contested assembly polls against Singh from latter's home constituency Raghogarh in Guna district.

There are 14 constituencies from where the Congress had not won during the BJP rule in the state, while the saffron party failed to wrest Congress stronghold of Chhindwara and Guna.

State BJP's chief spokesman Deepak Vijaywargiya said, "This time BJP will try to win all the 29 seats in the state and will field strong candidates of the caliber of Scindia and Nath in their respective constituencies." 

"The party will field the best workers from the remaining seats of the state so that it can win from all the constituencies," he said.

"Depending upon the opposition candidate, the party may also change its strategy at the last moment to ensure victory in each and every constituency," he added.

The fourteen seats from where the Congress has not won since last 15 years are -- Bhopal, Indore, Vidisha, Morena, Bhind, Sagar, Tikamgarh, Damoh, Khajuraho, Satna, Jabalpur, Balaghat, Betul and Rewa.

The Congress has announced candidature of Kiran Ahirwar from Tikamgarh, Kavita Singh from Khajuraho, Madhu Bhagat from Balaghat and Ramu Tekam from Betul.

Except Rewa, the BJP has been winning from the rest of the seats. In 2009, Bahujan Samaj Party's (BSP) Devraj Singh Patel won from Rewa while in 2004 and 2014, the BJP emerged victorious from this seat in Vindhya region bordering Uttar Pradesh.

Since 1996, the BJP has not lost from Morena, Sagar, Jabalpur and Betul while it is winning continuously since 1998 from Satna and Balaghat.

In the remaining 13 seats -- Gwalior, Jhabua, Shahdol, Mandla, Hoshangabad, Rajgarh, Dewas, Ujjain, Mandsaur, Dhar, Sidhi, Khargone and Khandwa -- there have been mixed results for the two parties during the last 15 years.        [Agencies]

Jabalpur, Mar 9 :  The Madhya Pradesh High Court has directed a government college to reinstate a guest lecturer whose services it had terminated during her maternity leave.

Setting aside the order of termination, Justice Sujoy Paul Friday asked the college to give her maternity benefits.

Richa Tiwari, a guest faculty of computer science in the Government Naveen Mahavidyalay at Lidhoura in Tikamgarh district, had filed the petition challenging her termination order of October 22, 2108, her counsel said.

"The high court said the respondents (including the state government) shall reinstate the petitioner in service and treat the relevant period as maternity leave and grant maternity benefits to her," Tiwari's counsel Madhavi Chaturvedi said.

The petitioner had applied for maternity leave on October 1, 2018 while in advance stage of pregnancy. She had also attached medical documents in support. But the college authorities did not respond to it, she said.

"However, her services were terminated on October 22 on the pretext that she remained absent from the college without informing the authorities, whereas the petitioner had already applied for maternity leave," Chaturvedi said.                [Agencies]

Mandla (MP), Feb 26 :  A seven-month-old leopard was killed by a tiger in the Phen Wildlife Sanctuary under the Kanha Tiger Reserve (KTR) in Madhya Pradesh, an official said Tuesday.

KTR Field Director L Krishnamurty said a team of forest officials Monday spotted pug-marks of a tiger in the sanctuary while patrolling the area.

"The pug-marks led the team to a tiger which was seen with the carcass of a leopard. The tiger fled after spotting us, leaving the carcass behind," he said.

The marks around the spot suggested that it was the tiger who had killed the leopard in a fight, Krishnamurty said.

As per procedure, a postmortem was conducted as per the guidelines of the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA), he added.             [Agencies]

Gwalior, Feb 25 :  Union minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi Monday said in Madhya Pradesh that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has blocked the "loot lobby" and controlled terrorism successfully.

Addressing a convention of BJP workers here, the Minority Affairs Minister said the BJP will retain power after polls, as PM Modi has ensured "development without discrimination".

"PM Modi's strong will power has ensured blockade of middlemen and the corrupt. Modi has taken a strict action against the 'loot lobby'. Each and every penny of public money is now spent on welfare of the poor," Naqvi stated in a release.

The minister stated the prime minister's policy of "development without Discrimination" has ensured that every section of the society has become an equal partner in the development process.

"The development works being carried out by the Modi government had not been taken place during 60 years of rule of the Congress governments," he said.

Talking about the security scenario, the minister said the previous government had adopted a lackadaisical approach towards the national security and terrorism, before BJP came to power in 2014.

"Before 2014, hundreds of innocent people had been killed in terror activities almost every month in one and another part of the country. But due to the 'zero tolerance' policy of Modi government against terrorism, terror activities have been confined to a few places in Kashmir only," he said.

Talking about upcoming elections, Naqvi said the BJP's "Sankalp Patra" would be the only such manifesto that will be prepared with the help, suggestions and participation of crores of people of the country.

Naqvi said the BJP was reaching out to the people across the country through various platforms like websites, WhatsApp messages and e-mails.

He said a campaign like giving a missed call on a particular number is underway to reach out to people.

Besides, 300 'sankalp Rath' vehicles are rolled out and as many as 7700 suggestion boxes installed to receive suggestions from people in various cities.                 [Agencies]

Jabalpur, Feb 17 :  Three passengers were killed and 30 others injured when a bus fell into a drain from a bridge in Jabalpur district of Madhya Pradesh in the wee hours of Sunday, police said.

The incident took place around 4 am when the bus was heading from Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh (UP) to Nagpur district in Maharashtra, Superintendent of Police Koushal Singh said.

The bus driver apparently lost control over the wheels when the vehicle was crossing the bridge located on the outskirts of Jabalpur. As a result, the bus fell into a dry portion of Karondi 'nullah' (drain), he said.

Three passengers died on the spot. They were identified as Murat Lal (24), Rahul Sen (20), both residents of Nagpur, and Ramu Pal (22), hailing from Chitrakoot in UP, the official said.

Gwalior (MP), Dec 26 :  Noted sitar player Manju Mehta has been conferred with the 'Tansen Samman' for 2018 by the Madhya Pradesh government for her contribution in the field of music.

Union minister Narendra Singh Tomar presented the award to Mehta, 74, at the inaugural ceremony of the Tansen Music Festival here on Tuesday.

She was given a cash award of Rs 2 lakh and a memento.

Mehta, a recipient of several honours, learnt music from legendary sitar maestro late Pandit Ravi Shankar, an official in Madhya Pradesh's culture department said.

She runs a music school at Ahmedabad in Gujarat, the official added.

Meanwhile, the 'Raja Mansingh Tomar Honour' was given to the Sankat Mochan Pratishthan in Varanasi for 2017 and the Natrang Pratishthan of New Delhi for 2018.

The award is given to institutions for nurturing good music.

The Tansen Music Festival is organised every year by the MP culture department in the memory of Tansen, one of the greatest artists in Indian history.

The potential chief minister candidates in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh arrived in the city Thursday for a meeting with Congress president Rahul Gandhi who will take a final call on the top post in the states.


New Delhi, Dec 13 (PTI) The potential chief minister candidates in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh arrived in the city Thursday for a meeting with Congress president Rahul Gandhi who will take a final call on the top post in the states. 

The contenders for the top post in Rajasthan -- Ashok Gehlot and Sachin Pilot - and in Madhya Pradesh -- Kamal Nath and Jyotiraditya Scindia -- arrived early morning in the national capital and will be meeting Gandhi soon.

The Congress president will first meet party observers A K Antony for Madhya Pradesh and K C Venugopal for Rajasthan before meeting those in the race.

The observers had already held discussions with the newly-elected party MLAs in Jaipur and Bhopal Wednesday and would give their inputs to Gandhi on who the legislators want to be as their chief ministers.

Using an internal messaging platform for the party workers, Gandhi had sent out to party workers a pre-recorded audio message seeking their feedback for selection of the chief minister in their respective states.

Sources said that the decision would be taken Thursday itself after the state legislature party had authorised the Congress president to take a final call on the chief ministers.

Congress observer for Chattisgarh Mallikarjun Kharge will also be handing over his report to Gandhi following which he is likely to meet the contenders.

The Congress emerged as the single largest party in the state by winning 114 seats, two short of a simple majority. 

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which ruled the state for 15 years, got 109 seats.

However, it edged ahead of the Congress in the vote share by a slender margin, bagging 41 per cent of the total votes polled, while the Congress got 40.9 per cent.

"We have got more votes, but we will respect the mandate. We haven't got the required seats to form the government. We will not stake claim to form the government and I am submitting my resignation soon to the governor," Chouhan told reporters.

Bahujan Samaj Party supremo Mayawati and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav have announced their parties' support to the Congress in Madhya Pradesh.

Chouhan was the state's longest serving chief minister since 2005.

The announcement by SP chief Akhilesh Yadav came less than an hour after Bahujan Samaj Party supremo Mayawati made a similar offer to the Congress for government formation in the Hindi heartland state of Madhya Pradesh.

She also said that if the need arises, the BSP will support the Congress in Rajasthan to form the next government.

"We don't agree with the ideology of the Congress. But we will support it to keep the BJP out of power," she said here.

Datia (MP), Oct 15 (PTI) Congress president Rahul Gandhi Monday began his two-day tour of poll-bound Madhya Pradesh by offering prayers at the famous Maa Peetambara Peeth temple complex here.

Gandhi reached Datia district in the morning by a helicopter from Gwalior. He then went to the temple complex where he offered prayers to the deity and stayed at the 'shaktipeeth' for about half-an-hour.

State Congress president Kamal Nath and senior party leader Jyotiraditya Scindia accompanied him. Scindia introduced priests and other members of the temple trust to Gandhi.

Elections will be held in Madhya Pradesh on November 28.

The Congress chief is scheduled to address a public meeting here later in the day. 

Many political bigwigs have visited the shrine in the past, state Congress spokesman Pankaj Chaturvedi told PTI.

"Indira Gandhi (Rahul Gandhi's grandmother) visited the shrine in 1979, before polls in 1980 and later after becoming the prime minister. Later, Rajiv Gandhi (the Congress chief's father) also paid a visit to the shaktipeeth after becoming PM in 1984-85," he said.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje Scindia is the chairperson of the Peetambara Trust, that manages the affairs of the shrine.

Chaturvedi also recalled when the then prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru had fallen very sick, senior Congress leader Kamlapati Tripathi organised a special 'puja' for his recovery there.

Damoh (MP), Oct 8: Authorities in Madhya Pradesh's Damoh district seized around 2,000 bags carrying images of state Finance Minister Jayant Malaiya in connection with the implementation of the model code of conduct in the poll-bound state.

The election code of conduct came into force in Madhya Pradesh Saturday after the Election Commission announced poll dates for five states.

MP will go to polls on November 28 and counting of votes will be carried out on December 11.

Following a complaint, a team comprising police and district authorities Sunday seized 2,000 bags, containing sanitary pads and soaps among other things, Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Ravindra Choukse said.

These bags carried an image of Malaiya, the official said, adding that such articles could not be distributed as it would violate the model code of conduct that has come into force in the state.

He informed that they were meant for a centre run by the Madhya Pradesh State Rural Livelihoods Mission that imparts training to members of self help groups (SHGs).

These bags were seized from different places and a case under relevant sections of the Public Representative Act and IPC has been registered against SHG manager Akhilesh Shukla and driver Lalchand Ahirwar.

The two were carrying 600 such bags to a village, the SDM added. (PTI)

Ajmer, Oct 6 (PTI) In a scathing attack Saturday on the Congress, Prime Minister Narendra Modi accused the opposition party of practising vote bank politics and dividing people to get into power.

The prime minister made the charge at a rally here just ahead of the announcement of assembly election dates for Rajasthan and four other states in November and December.

He asked people not to let the Congress get into power again.

Modi said vote bank politics is not limited to elections now.

Political parties which do vote bank politics divide the bureaucracy when they are in power and this badly affects governance, he said.

They allocate the budget as per vote bank politics and therefore overall development does not happen, he said at the meeting which marked the end of Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje's state-wide political `yatra'.

The Congress has established this tradition in the past 60 years, Modi said.

"With great difficulty, the country has picked the right direction now after 60 years. Don't give them another chance again, he said.

He said the Congress leaders' high command is a family and they can do politics only be revering it.

He accused the party low-level politics.

The Congress leaders were questioning the surgical strikes by the Army across the Line of Control two years ago and insulting soldiers, he said.

They should be ashamed of indulging in such politics, Modi said.

The rally marked the end of Raje's Rajasthan Gaurav Yatra', an outreach exercise by the Bharatiya Janata Party.

The prime minister's rally ended shortly before the Election Commission's press conference in Delhi announcing the polling dates for Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Mizoram and Telangana.

Rajasthan will go to the polls on December 7. Counting will take place in all five states on December 11, the EC announced.

New Delhi, Sep 6: At a time when upper caste-OBC groups in Madhya Pradesh are protesting against the SC/ST Act, a tribal group has said it will contest the year-end assembly elections to form a tribal government in the state.

Jai Adivasi Yuva Shakti (JAYS) started as a group on Facebook in 2012. Six years on, it has around 15 lakh members in 10 states, including Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Odisha, Hiralal Alawa, the founder of JAYS, claimed.

Alawa worked as a doctor at AIIMS in New Delhi till 2016. He then returned to Dhar district, his hometown, to "take the fight for the rights of tribal people to the next level".

"We are uniting the tribal populations in 10 states where scheduled areas have been declared under the Fifth Schedule of the Constitution," he said.

"We are demanding proper implementation of the Fifth Schedule and the Panchayats (Extension to Scheduled Areas) Act and that the benefits of the Forest Act be extended to tribal people," Alawa said.

The Fifth Schedule under Article 244 (1) of the Constitution defines scheduled areas. The purpose of such areas is to preserve the tribal autonomy, their culture, and economic empowerment to ensure social, economic and political justice.

"A large number of tribal children are dying due to malnutrition. Scores of people are being displaced from their areas. The government has failed to provide electricity and drinking water in tribal villages," he alleged.

Tribal children do not have access to education and healthcare. Development funds do not reach such areas due to corruption. There is no employment even under the government's rural employment guarantee scheme MNREGA, he rued.

There are 47 leaders representing tribal populations in Parliament and around 600 tribal legislators in state assemblies, but they have been ineffective in highlighting the issues of their people. The tribal MPs and MLAs are busy spreading their party's propaganda, the JAYS founder alleged.

The JAYS had recently organized a mahapanchayat at Manawar in Dhar district "where around 50,000 tribal people protested against the Madhya Pradesh government's decision to give 32 Adivasi villages to UltraTech. The government just gave a meager sum as compensation to the displaced people," Alawa said.

He claimed the "adivasi adhikar yatra" started by JAYS in July compelled Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan to declare a holiday on UN Day for Indigenous People on August 9 in 20 tribal-dominated districts of Madhya Pradesh. The yatra will culminate on Sunday.

He said a JAYS delegation met the chief minister on August 3 and submitted a 25-point charter of demands but "he did not act on our requests".

"To make its voice heard, the JAYS has decided to fight elections in 47 ST reserved seats and 33 other seats, each having 40,000 to 50,000 tribal voters. Our slogan is 'abki baar adivasi sarkar'," the activist said.

He said that the JAYS is ready to give support to any party willing to work for tribals. Alawa said that the Congress is in talks with the JAYS and the group may extend support to the party.

According to him, 162 JAYS-backed candidates had won student union polls in tribal-dominated districts of Dhar, Barwani, Jhabua, and Alirajpur last year, defeating nominees having the support of the ABVP and NSUI of the Congress.

The Bharatiya Janata Party, however, does not consider the JAYS a challenge and seems more worried about the ongoing protests by upper caste-OBC groups.

There is a perception that the BJP gets its maximum votes from upper castes and OBC blocs. Also, many leaders of JAYS have left it due to an "internal rift" in the tribal group, a BJP leader said on condition of anonymity.

On the issues of tribals, the BJP's state unit chief Rakesh Singh said, "Our government is moving ahead taking every section of society along. We are working for everyone."

Asked about the upper caste-OBC protests, he said, "It is a sensitive issue and should not be politicised."

On the protests against the SC/ST Act, Alawa said, "These upper caste groups inflict atrocities on Dalits and Scheduled Tribes. This has been the case for long. We may launch a counter-agitation." (PTI)

Raisen (MP), Sep 3: A 35-year-old man's hand was allegedly chopped off by members of a family when he went to their residence to enquire about his missing cow here, police said Monday.

The victim, Kallu Sahu, went Saturday evening to the home of Sattu Yadav in Pipalwali village, situated about 40 km from the district headquarters, in search of his missing cow, Sultanpur police station's Assistant Sub-Inspector Malkhan Singh Meena said.

However, a simple enquiry about the animal turned into a heated argument when Yadav did not give a satisfactory reply on the matter following which Sahu allegedly abused him, he said.

The enraged family members of Yadav then caught Sahu and tied him to a tree. They allegedly thrashed Sahu mercilessly, attacked him with a sword and chopped off one of his hands and caused severe injuries to the other, Meena said.

Sahu's kin rushed to the spot and freed him from captivity, he said, adding that they later admitted him to the community health centre at Sultanganj from where he was referred to a hospital in Bhopal.

Police registered a case in connection with the incident and arrested Yadav and his son on Sunday, Meena said.

A search was on for three others - Yadav's wife, his another son and a servant - who were also allegedly involved in the incident, he added. (PTI)
