Shabana Azmi injured in accident on Mumbai-Pune Expressway


Mumbai, Jan 18 :  Actor Shabana Azmi and another person were injured in an accident on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway in Maharashtra's Raigad district on Saturday, the police said.

Azmi was rushed to MGM Hospital in Navi Mumbai and was said to be out of danger, said a police official. Her husband and lyricist Javed Akhtar, who was traveling with her, escaped unhurt.

The incident took place near Khalapur, over 60 km from Mumbai, when the Tata Safari car in which they were traveling to Pune rammed into a truck, said Raigad Superintendent of Police Anil Paraskar.

A local police official said the car driver was apparently trying to overtake another vehicle and rammed into the truck.

One more person who was travelling in the car sustained minor injuries, he said. His identity was not known yet.

Azmi's spokesperson said the actor was undergoing a check-up. "She is fine, nothing to worry about," the spokesperson added.

Javed Akhtar celebrated his 75th birthday on Friday.

"Shabana Azmi injured in road accident on Mumbai-Pune Expressway OMG! Praying so hard," actor Swara Bhaskar tweeted.

Azmi is known for her path-breaking roles in films such as "Arth", "Ankur", "Paar", "Masoom" and "Godmother".

Jammu, Jul 1 :  At least 35 people died and over a dozen were injured when an overcrowded bus skidded off a hilly road and fell into a deep gorge in Jammu and Kashmir's Kishtwar district on Monday morning, officials said.

The minibus, which was on its way from Keshwan to Kishtwar, skidded off the Keshwan-Thakrai road and rolled down into the deep gorge around 7.30 am, officials said.

Kishtwar Deputy Commissioner A S Rana told that the 28-seater bus was carrying 52 passengers when the accident occurred, adding that a probe would be ordered.

Thirty-five people died and 17 others were injured, district Senior Superintendent of Police Shakti Pathak told.

The police, security agencies and the locals launched a rescue operation and shifted the injured to the hospital. Choppers were flown in and three passengers were airlifted from the site to the Jammu Government Medical College Hospital here, officials said.

Governor Satya Pal Malik expressed grief over the incident and announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh each to the next of the kin of the deceased. He directed the administration to provide the best medical treatment to the injured and wished them speedy recovery.

Malik said the reasons for such incidents would be probed thoroughly and strong decisions would be taken in the next state administrative council (SAC) meeting to ensure strict action.

A few months ago, the governor had directed the Transport Department officers to take away unfit vehicles and untrained drivers off the road, according to a Raj Bhawan spokesperson.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the loss of lives. "The accident in Jammu and Kashmir's Kishtwar is heart-wrenching. We mourn all those who lost their lives and express condolences to the bereaved families. May the injured recover at the earliest," Modi tweeted.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also expressed sorrow over the deaths. "Extremely saddened to learn about the loss of lives due to a road accident in Kishtwar, Jammu & Kashmir. My deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their loved ones. I pray of the speedy recovery of those injured," he tweeted.

Sitamarhi/Muzaffarpur (Bihar), Jan 13 :  Two persons were killed and 34 others injured after a tourist bus carrying them collided head-on with a truck in Bihar's Muzaffarpur district on Saturday, police said.

The incident happened on the Sitamarhi-Muzaffarpur road (NH-77) near Bhanaspatti village under the jurisdiction of Runnisaidpur police station, when the bus was travelling from Uttarakhand to Gaya via Muzaffarpur, the police said.

The passengers had offered prayers at Janki temple in Sitamarhi, the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) of Sitamarhi Sadar, Kumar Veer Dhirendra, said.

All the passengers had come from Uttarakhand, the DSP said.

All the 34 injured were taken to Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH) in Muzaffarpur, the District Magistrate (DM) of Muzaffarpur, Mohammad Sohail, said.

While 19 persons were admitted to the hospital, 15 others were being treated at the hospital's out patient department (OPD), the DM said.

One among the 19 admitted was shifted to the ICU of the hospital, he said.

The driver of the bus and a woman died in the accident, the DM said.

The woman has been as Rukmini Devi, he added.

The collision was so massive that the front portions of both the bus and the truck have been badly damaged, a police officer said.                PTI

Chandigarh, Jan 12 : Five persons were killed after a tractor trolley overturned in Punjab's Amritsar district on Saturday, the police said.

The incident took place in the morning at Vallah in Amritsar district when the tractor trolley carrying labourers was on its way to a construction site, Amritsar Assistant Commissioner of Police Jaspreet Singh.

The front wheel of the tractor got dislodged and it overturned near a canal, he added.

The police suspect that construction material including heavy iron pipes, which were being transported in the trolley when it overturned, may have inflicted serious injuries on the labourers leading to their deaths.             PTI

New Delhi, Dec 11 : In a suspected case of road rage, a 34-year-old man was allegedly shot dead following a quarrel after his car collided with a scooter in Shahdara's Geeta Colony area, police said on Monday.

The deceased has been identified as Sushil Chauhan, a resident of New Usmanpur, they said.

Police said the incident took place at around 11.30 pm on Monday and they were informed about it the deceased's friend Karthik Kashyab who was also present there.

The accused are yet to be identified.

Chauhan was returning home with his friends after having dinner at a restaurant in Geeta Colony. When they reached near Geeta Colony flyover, their car collided with a scooter while taking a turn, a senior police officer said.

An argument erupted between them after which the scooter rider open fire at Chauhan and fled from the spot. Chauhan sustained a bullet injury in his thigh, the officer said.

Chauhan was rushed to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan Hospital by his friends where he was declared brought dead by the doctor. He died due to the excessive bleeding, the officer said.

There were six persons in the car including three women. As of now, it is a suspected to be a matter of road rage and no personal enmity angle was found, Meghna Yadav, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara) said.

A case has been registered and the matter is being probed, the officer said.

Police said no CCTV footage was found installed near the spot. However, the other occupants of the car did not sustain any injury.

The statement of the victims have been taken. The victim's have alleged involvement of two men in the attack, police said.

The body will be handed over to the family members after the post-mortem.

The deceased Chauhan, a tailor by profession was survived by his wife and a daughter.   PTI

Kota, Oct 8: Two people were killed when their motorcycle collided with stray cattle at NH-27, police said Monday.

The accident occurred on Sunday evening near Jhalipura village which comes under the jurisdiction of Kaithun police station.

The two were rushed to MBS Hospital, where they were declared brought dead.

The deceased persons were identified as Dilip Meghwal (30) and Rameshchand Nayak (45), both residents of Kacholiya village, said Sugan Singh, the SHO of Kaithun police station.

The bodies were later handed over to family members after postmortem, the SHO said. (PTI)

Ballia (UP), Oct 8: Two persons were killed after being hit by a tempo in Sahodeeh village here, police said Monday.

Preetam (19) and Rohit (21) were killed in the accident that took place on Sunday, they said.

The bodies of the two have been sent for postmortem.

Amaravati(AP), Oct 3: Veteran Telugu Desam Party leader, educationist and member of Andhra Pradesh Legislative Council M V V S Murthy died in a road accident in the USA, the party announced here Wednesday.


He was 76. He also served as a member of Lok Sabha from Visakhapatnam for two terms from 1991 to 1996 and 1999 to 2004.

Murthy and three others were killed in a car-truck collision on the highway near Alaska in the US, where he had gone to take part in the GITAM Alumni meet on October 6.

The MLC was on his way to a wildlife sanctuary when the accident occurred on Monday afternoon (US time).

Telugu Association of North America members are coordinating with the US authorities to bring the TDP leader's body back to the state.

Murthy had been an active leader of the TDP since 1983 and had a close association with the party's founder-president N T Rama Rao.

He founded the Gandhi Institute of Technology and Management (GITAM) at Rushikonda near Visakhapatnam, which has now been granted a "deemed to-be university" status with campuses in Hyderabad and Bengaluru.

He served as Chairman of Visakhapatnam Urban Development Authority from 1987 to 1989 and lost the 1989 Lok Sabha election.

In 1991, he was elected to Parliament from Visakhapatnam for the first time and again in 1999.

A doctorate in economics from Andhra University, Murthy established many colleges in his native East Godavari and other districts.

He also owned a soft drinks bottling plant in Visakhapatnam and became popular as 'Goldspot' Murthy.

He was elected to the Legislative Council in 2014 from the Visakhapatnam Local Authorities constituency.

Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, his deputies K E Krishna Murthy, N China Rajappa, Council Chairman N Md Farook, Assembly Speaker Kodela Sivaprasada Rao, ministers and MPs condoled Murthy's death.

"I was shocked to learn about the death of Murthy.

His services as an MP and an MLC are memorable. His death is a deep loss to the field of education and also politics. It is a personal loss to me," Naidu said in a message.

He also expressed anguish over the death of many TDP leaders in road accidents.

Deputy Chief Minister Krishna Murthy recalled that he and Murthy were elected to the Lok Sabha for the first time in 1991.

"I lost a good friend," he said.

Shimla, Sep 22: Thirteen people, including three couples, died after a vehicle veered off a road and fell into a deep gorge in Himachal Pradesh's Shimla district Saturday, a police official said.

The accident happened at Sanail, three kilometres from Kuddu on Tiyuni Road. The ill-fated Trax vehicle (bearing registration number HP 02 0695) was on its way to Tiyuni from Swara.

All the thirteen occupants were killed in the accident, Shimla Superintendent of Police Omapati Jamwal said.

While 10 of them died on the spot, three succumbed to injuries at Rohru hospital, Jamwal said.

The deceased included eight members of three families. Three couples were among the deceased.

The deceased have been identified as Matvar Singh (48), his wife Basanti Devi (44), their son Munish (24), Prem Singh (38), his wife Poonam (30), their daughter Ridhima (6), Attar Singh (44), his wife Munna Devi (40), Bittu (42), Bandi Devi (48), Ner Singh (35), Manoj (35) and Anil (28).

A police team led by Jubbal Station House Officer and Swara police post in-charge reached the site shortly after getting information about the accident. The team rescued three injured people and sent them to Rohru hospital but they died, Jamwal added. (PTI)

Shimla, Sep 22: Ten people, including four women, died and three others were injured after a vehicle veered off a road in Himachal Pradesh's Shimla district Saturday, a police official said.

The accident happened at Snail, three kilometres from Kuddu on Tiyuni Road.

The three injured, including a child, have been admitted to Rohru hospital, Shimla Superintendent of Police Omapati Jamwal said.

A police team led by Jubbal Station House Officer and Swara police post in-charge is at the accident site, he added.

Muzaffarnagar, Sep 22: Four people died and two others were seriously injured when a car collided with a stationary truck in Muzaffarnagar district of Uttar Pradesh, a police official said Saturday.

The accident happened apparently due to low visibility near Vahelna village Friday night when the occupants of the car were on their way to Roorkee from Delhi, Civil Lines police station SHO DK Tyagi said.

The injured have been admitted to a hospital, Tyagi said.

He identified the deceased as Danish, his sister Rubi, truck driver Mohd. Waseem and helper Bhure. (PTI)

The incident took place Thursday evening, they said.

Shimla, Sep 20: The death toll in a bus accident in Himachal Pradesh's Chamba district has risen to three as one more person succumbed to injuries Thursday, police said.

The incident occurred Wednesday after the private bus hit a crash barrier that prevented it from falling into a gorge at Luna vilage in Bharmour, around 420 km from here.

The bus, carrying as many as 50 people, was on its way to Chhatrari village from Palampur hill station, Superintendent of Police Monika Bhutungru said.

Chatro Ram (82), a resident of Niyangal village in Kangra district, succumbed to injuries at Tanda Medical College Thursday, Bhutunguru said, adding three more injured were in serious condition.

Two persons - Kaushalya (50) and Makholi (65) - died and 48 others were injured in the accident on Wednesday. (PTI)

Gonda (UP), Sep 20: Four people were killed and eight others suffered injuries in a road accident in Gonda district of Uttar Pradesh, police said.

A mini-truck and a jeep collided head on and crushed a motorcycle in the accident late Wednesday night near Belmathar village in the Paraspur police station area.

Superintendent of Police Lallan Singh said Mannu (55) and Sheru (22), who were on the motorcycle, jeep driver Goldie (32) and a woman, Saraswati Singh (46), were killed in the accident.

Shimla, Sept 3: Three persons were killed when the tipper lorry they were travelling in overturned on Koti Utrau Road, near the Uttarakhand border in Shillai tehsil of Himachal Pradesh's Sirmaur district, the police said Monday.

Sirmaur Superintendent of Police Rohit Malpani said the incident occurred on Sunday night. All the deceased were from Ashyari village.

While Balbir died on the spot, Kamlesh and Anil succumbed to their injuries at a hospital in Vikasnagar, the official added. (PTI)

Jaipur, Aug 28: Two men were killed and six others injured today after a collision on National Highway 113 in Rajasthan's Pratapgarh district involving a car and five motorcycles, police said.

The incident took place at Chena Ghati when the driver of the car lost control over the vehicle and collided with motorcyclists who were on their way to Ramdevra village in Jaisalmer district, SHO, Dhamotar police station, Shambhu Singh said.

The car was going to Pratapgarh from Choti Sadri, he added.

Shambhu said the vehicle after hitting the motorcyclists dashed into a tree and overturned.

He said the deceased were identified as Shivlal Nagari and Kanhaiya Lal, both aged 24.

Their bodies were handed over to family members after post-mortem, the SHO added.

The Injured were referred to Udaipur for treatment from a government hospital in Pratapgarh, he said.

Shambhu said efforts were on to nab the car driver who fled the accident scene. (PTI)

Jaipur, Aug 27: Three members of a family were killed after their bike was hit by an unidentified vehicle in Rajasthan's Bhilwara district, police said today.

The deceased were identified as Ashok Regar (17), Rakesh Regar (20) and Chandra Prakash Regar (24), they said.

The three were killed after an unidentified vehicle hit them near Piploond crossing late last night, Station House Officer at Jahajpur Police Station Panna Lal said.

He said the bodies were handed over to their family members after post-mortem and a case was registered. (PTI)

Shimla, Aug 24: Four people were killed and three others injured when their car fell into a deep gorge in Nankhari tehsil of Himachal Pradesh's Shimla district, the police said today.

The four were on their way to Dhanavali village from Nankhari when the incident happened near Dhona village late last night.

A police team reached the spot immediately and started rescue work.

Three youths identified as Ashish alias Ram Lal (25), Surender (30) and Dalip Kumar (26), all residents of Dhanavali, died on the spot, the official said.

One of the four injured Hemchand (27) later succumbed to injuries.

The injured -- including vehicle owner Suresh (35), Neeraj Kumar (32) and Sunder (25) - have been admitted to a community health centre at Nankhari, he added.

Yesterday, eleven people were killed when a vehicle fell into a 200-feet deep gorge in Kullu district. (PTI)

Jamshedpur, Aug 23: Three persons were killed and 35 others injured when a bus overturned in Jharkhand's East Singhbhum district early today, police said.

The bus was on its way to Raxaul in Bihar when the driver lost control over the vehicle and it overturned near Jamsola chowk, about 90 km from here, they said.

One person died on the spot while two others succumbed to their injuries in hospital, they said.

The injured were first rushed to primary health centre in Baharagora. The doctors at the health centre referred them to government-run M G M Hospital here.

Altogether 15 injured persons were admitted in M G M hospital while several were discharged after first-aid, they added. (PTI)
