Srinagar, May 14 :  The historic 86-km-long Mughal road reopened on Monday after remaining closed for traffic on Sunday due to fresh landslides, triggered by rain.

However, Heavy Motor Vehicle (HMV) will continue to ply one-way only while Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs) will operate from both sides, a traffic police official told .

He said traffic on the Mughal road, connecting Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region, was closed again following fresh landslides early yesterday. However, the district authorities immediately put into service sophisticated machines and men and cleared the landslide.

He said LMVs will ply from both sides on the road. However, HMV will ply from one side only to avoid any traffic jam as the road is narrow at some place due to huge snow walls on both sides. On Monday HMVs will ply from Rajouri to Srinagar.

Meanwhile, the 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu national highway and 434-km-long highway, connecting Ladakh region with Kashmir were through for traffic.UNI

Srinagar, May 9: Traffic on the 86-km-long historic Mughal road was resumed on Wednesday after remaining suspended for two days due to accumulation of snow and slippery conditions while the Kashmir and Ladakh highway were also through for traffic.
Traffic on the Mughal road, connecting Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region, resumed this morning, a traffic police official told.
The road was closed on May 7 following fresh snowfall at several places, including Pir-ki-Gali, he said, adding that snow clearance operation was started from both sides and traffic was restored today.
The Centre has recently approved the road as National highway to make it all weather road by constructing tunnels.
He said light motor vehicles will ply from both sides on the road. However, no heavy vehicle will be allowed till further orders as the road is still very narrow at some place as vehicles had to pass through snowfall.
Meanwhile, two-way Light Motor Vehicle (LMV) traffic will continue on the 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu national highway, linking the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, he said. Heavy Motor Vehicle (HMV) traffic will continue to ply one-side only to prevent any accident and traffic jam.
Two-way traffic also continued on Srinagar-Leh national highway, the only road linking the Ladakh region with Kashmir. However, traffic will be allowed from Drass in Ladakh to Sonamarg in central Kashmir in the morning. Later, traffic will be allowed from here to other side of the Zojila pass, he said. UNI

Mehbooba stresses on taking Vailoo, Sughmahadev tunnels, Mughal Road, other projects as national priority

New Delhi, May 02: The Centre has agreed in principle to accord National Highway status to Mughal Road connecting Jammu and Kashmir provinces through Pir Panchal region. The Centre has also decided to put the construction of Vailoo-Singhpora and Chenani-Sudhmahadev tunnels on the fast track mode to expedite the start of work.
These decisions were taken in a marathon meeting of officers held here today with Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH),  Nitin Gadkari and Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti jointly in chair.
Minister for Public Works & Culture, Naeem Akhtar was also present in the meeting.
The meeting was informed that the process for formulation of project reports for these projects has already been started and the consultancy report has been received by the Union Government and with the melting of snow on these roads further action would be initiated.
Terming connectivity critical in bridging the mental divide between the people of Kashmir and rest of the country, the Chief Minister stressed on taking these tunnel projects in mission mode as a national priority.
The Chief Minister also raised the fast tracking of Baramulla-Gulmarg-Loran road which was founded in 2015. The road would provide alternatate connectivity to Gulmarg via Poonch thus ensuring more inter regional connectivity and giving the tourist inflow a push as well.
The Union Minister directed the concerned agencies to use latest technologies and soil stabilising methods to get ahead on the construction so that the project is completed at the earliest.
Mehbooba Mufti also took up the issue of 80 kilometre long Doda-Dessa-Kapran road connecting Doda district with Anantnag. The Union Minister directed completion of all formalities on the project including forest clearances for its quick consideration.
The Chief Minister also raised the issue of widening of Srinagar-Jammu National Highway and the bottlenecks coming in the way on the Ramban-Banihal stretch. She stressed on attaching national importance to the project as it is the only Highway connecting Kashmir Valley with rest of the country.
The Union Minister assured the Chief Minister that he would himself review the status of all these connectivity projects soon with all the concerned agencies. He also directed constitution of an expert team which would visit the Jawahar tunnel and inspect the repairs to be done as suggested by the Chief Minister.
In a significant decision involving local youth, Mr. Gadkari on the persistent demand of Mehbooba Mufti, directed training of 3000-4000 local youth in tunneling, highway construction, earth cutting and stabilisation works etc. by concerned project executing agencies so that subsequently they are engaged in similar projects.
On the suggestion of the Chief Minister, the Union Minister also directed the project executing agencies to associate local youth in the material supplies and other ancilliary works so that the socio economic development of the catchment areas is also taken care of.
It may be recalled here that projects worth Rs. 60, 000 crore in infrastructure including highways, tunnels and roads are under execution in the State currently.
The Chief Minister also sought construction of grade separators and flyovers on the National Highway where it touches major towns like Kathua, Samba, Jammu, Awantipore, Bijbehara and Srinagar to check the frequent traffic jams besides construction of a Bye Pass at Anantnag on the Donipawa-Ashajipora road stretch.
The meeting was also informed of complete and satisfactory utilisation of Rs.  332 crore under Central Road Fund by the State Government.
The meeting was also informed that the inception report of the water transport in the Jhelum river has been completed and the Detailed Project Report in this regard would come in next month. The Chief Minister, it may be mentioned here, had sought revival of water transport across the Jhelum river to provide an alternate transportantion mode and enhance the tourist attraction of the place.

Srinagar, Apr 25: The national highway, connecting Ladakh region with Kashmir, reopened on Wednesday after remaining closed for four days due to snowfall and slippery road conditions.
Meanwhile, the 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu national highway and 86-km-long historic Mughal road are also through for traffic.
'We have resumed traffic on the 434-km-long Srinagar-Leh national highway,' a traffic police official told.
He said traffic was suspended on the highway following fresh snowfall and slippery road conditions, particularly between Sonamarg, Zojila, Zero point, Meenmarg and Drass.
The Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for the maintenance of the highway, pressed into service sophisticated machines and cleared the snow, he said adding traffic will be allowed from both sides on the highway with some restrictions.
Traffic will be allowed from Drass for Sonmarg in Kashmir from 0500 hrs, he said, adding that Ladakh-bound traffic will be allowed from 1100 hrs.
Meanwhile, the Mughal road, connecting Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region, was through for only one-way for Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs). Traffic will ply from Bufliaz to Srinagar today and no vehicle will be allowed from opposite direction. The road is still very narrow at several places and vehicles had to pass through huge snow walls.
The national highway, connecting Kashmir valley with the rest of the country was also through for traffic, the official said. However, LMVs will ply from both Srinagar and Jammu, while heavy vehicles will continue to ply one-way only. HMVs will ply from Jammu to Srinagar only and no heavy vehicle will be allowed from opposite direction.
He said people are requested to undertake the journey on the highway only after confirming the status of the road from Traffic Control Units (TCUs) set up in Srinagar, Ramban and Jammu. UNI

Srinagar, Apr 21: The national highway, linking the Ladakh region with Kashmir, and 86-km-long historic Mughal road remained closed for the second day on Saturday due to fresh snowfall, landslides and slippery road condition.
However, traffic was resumed on the 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu national highway after disruption for about six hours on Friday due to landslides.
The Mughal road, connecting Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region , remained closed for the second day today due to fresh snowfall and landslides at several places, including Pir-ki-Gali. 
The authorities have already started operation to clear the landslides and snow and put through the traffic, he said, adding that the weather has witnessed improvement since this morning. However, he said traffic will be allowed only after receiving green signal from the traffic police personnel deployed on both sides of the Gali.
The road was reopened for one-way traffic only early this month after remaining closed during winter due to accumulation of snow.
Traffic remained suspended on 434-km-long Srinagar-Leh national highway for the second day today due to fresh snowfall and slippery road condition, he said.
Fresh snowfall was recorded at Sonamarg, Zojila, Meenmarg and Drass, the second coldest place in the world after Siberia due to which road had become very slippery, he said adding that as a precautionary measure to prevent any accident, traffic was suspended. 
'We are allowing Kashmir-bound traffic from Drass in the morning from 0500 hrs, he said, adding that 'from Sonmarg in central Kashmir to Drass in Ladakh we are allowing movement of vehicles from 1100 hrs.'
The Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for the maintenance of the highway, has pressed into service sophisticated machine to put through the highway for traffic, he said.

Srinagar, Apr 20: The national highway, connecting Ladakh region with Kashmir was closed yet again on Friday due to fresh snowfall, while landslides forced closure of traffic on 86-km-long historic Mughal road.
However, despite rain the 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu national highway, the only all weather road, linking Kashmir with the rest of the country, was through for only one-way traffic.
There was fresh snowfall on the 434-km-long Srinagar-Leh national highway at Zojila, Meenmarg and other areas due to which road had become slippery forcing authorities to suspend traffic, a traffic police official told.
He said if the weather improves and road become safe for journey, traffic will be allowed on the highway.
'We are allowing traffic from Drass in Ladakh to Sonamarg in Kashmir in the morning from 0500 hrs to 1100 hrs everyday when the highway remains open, he said adding later traffic is allowed from here to Drass.'
The historic Mughal road, linking Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu was also closed for traffic movement following landslides in Pir-ki-Gali area. The authorities have already pressed into service sophisticated machines to put through the road, which is also seen as alternative to Srinagar-Jammu national highway.
The Srinagar-Jammu national highway was through for only one-way traffic, he said.
On Friday traffic will ply from Srinagar to Jammu only and no vehicle will be allowed from opposite direction, he said adding the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) , responsible for the maintenance of the highway, was already on the job to make it two-way at Peera Ramban where landslides had occurred on Wednesday. Srinagar, Apr 11: The 434-km-long national highway, the only road connecting Ladakh region with Kashmir valley, and 86-km-long historic Mughal road remained closed for the third day on Wednesday due to landslides and fresh snowfall.
Despite heavy rain during the past 24 hours, the 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu national highway was through for traffic.
The Mughal road, linking Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch remained closed for the third day on Wednesday, a traffic police official told UNI.
The authorities have already started work to remove the landslides and open the road. But, he said, traffic on the road will be resumed only after receiving green signal, he said . However, only one-way traffic will be allowed to ply on the road which is still narrow at some places as huge snow walls could be seen on both sides of the road.
Meanwhile, the national highway, linking Ladakh region with Kashmir was closed for traffic following avalanche at Captain Mode and fresh snowfall at Drass, the second coldest place in the world after Siberia. There was fresh snowfall at several places on the highway, including at Sonmarg, Zojila and Meenmarg during the past 36 hours. The BRO has pressed into service sophisticated machines and men to put through the highway. 
Traffic on the 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu national highway was plying from both sides for Light Motor Vehicle (LMV) despite rain during the past 24 hours.
Traffic is plying normally on the highway today also, he said adding that Heavy Motor Vehicles (HMV) will continue to ply from only one-way.Today HMVs will ply from Jammu to Srinagar and no HMV will be allowed from opposite direction, he said. But, he said, passengers, drivers and truckers, are requested to contact TCUs in Srinagar, Jammu and other places before undertaking the journey on the highway. UNI

Srinagar, Apr 9: Despite heavy rain during the night, the national highway, linking the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, was through for traffic on Monday while only one-way traffic of Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs) will ply on historic Mughal road.
Meanwhile, the 434-km-long Srinagar-Leh national highway, connecting Ladakh region with Kashmir, was also through for traffic from both ways.
Traffic on the 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu national highway was suspended on Sunday afternoon following landslides and shooting stones due to which two passenger vehicles were damaged. However, no one was injured.
The Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for the maintenance of the highway immediately put into service sophisticated machines and cleared the landslides and stones, a traffic police official told.
He said all the vehicles, including those carrying passengers from both sides, stranded at several places on the highway, were cleared till late on Sunday.
However, due to heavy rain, traffic was not allowed on the highway to prevent any accident, he said.
We have allowed LMVs from both sides on the highway Monday morning, an official of the Traffic Control Unit (TCU) Ramban told UNI over phone.
Traffic is plying normally on the highway today, he said adding that Heavy Motor Vehicles (HMV) will continue to ply from only one-way. On Monday HMVs will ply from Jammu to Srinagar and no HMV will be allowed from opposite direction, he said. But, he said, passengers, drivers and truckers, are requested to contact TCUs in Srinagar, Jammu and other places before undertaking the journey on the highway.
Traffic police official said only one-way LMV will ply on the historic 86-km-long Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region. No vehicle will be allowed from opposite direction to avoid any accident and traffic jam, he said. Today traffic will ply from Shopian to Buffliaz side only as there is still huge snow walls on both sides of the road, which is seen as alternative to Kashmir highway.
Meanwhile, the national highway, linking Ladakh region with Kashmir was through for both ways with some restrictions. In the morning traffic will ply from Kargil to Sonamarg only to avoid traffic jam or accident at Zojila pass. Similarly traffic will ply from Sonamarg in central Kashmir to Kargil in Ladakh on the highway, he said. UNI

SRINAGAR, JANUARY 23: Divisional Commissioner, Baseer Ahmad Khan, today directed the officials to explore the possibility of opening a portion of Mughal Road so that the remaining towers of major power transmission line being constructed along the road are completed.
He was speaking at a meeting convened to review the progress on laying of power transmission line along the Mughal Road.
The meeting was attended by district officers, R&B and Mughal Road officials and representatives of the private company laying the transmission line.
The company representatives informed that if a certain portion of the road is cleared they can deploy machinery and erect the crucial towers, that too, subject to weather conditions.

The Div Com directed the Mughal Road project authorities and district officials to give a report within seven days indicating whether the company can re-start the construction work.

Srinagar, Dec 16: Hundreds of vehicles, including those carrying essentials, left for Kashmir valley on Saturday as only one-way traffic will continue to ply on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway till further orders.
Meanwhile, the national highway, linking the Ladakh region with Kashmir, has been closed for winter months while historic 86-km-long Mughal road also remained shut due to heavy snowfall.
Today, traffic will ply from Jammu to Srinagar and no vehicle, including those of security forces, would be allowed from opposite direction, a traffic police official told UNI on Friday.
Large number of vehicles, including those carrying passengers and trucks carrying essentials, particularly vegetables, left different parts of Jammu region for Kashmir valley this morning. However, the Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs), including passengers, were allowed from 0500 hrs from Nagrota and they have to cross Udhampur by 1100 hrs.
Heavy vehicles and load carriers were allowed from 0400 hrs from Nagrota up to 1000 hrs only.
He said no vehicle, including convoy of security forces would be allowed from Srinagar to Jammu under any circumstances for smooth flow of traffic on the highway.
Traffic on the Mughal road, connecting Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region remained closed for the sixth day today as about three to four feet of snow had accumulated at several places. Though snow from Shopian to Heerpora has been cleared after pressing into service sophisticated machines, the officials said, adding that road on other side of the Pir-ki-Gali remained under snow. UNI

Srinagar, Dec 11: The 434-km-long Srinagar-Leh national highway, connecting Ladakh region with Kashmir, has been closed for winter months while Kashmir highway was through for traffic despite rain.
The 86-km-long historic Mughal road, linking Shopian in South Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region has been closed for any traffic movement following fresh snowfall since early this morning.
Meanwhile, authorities across the Kashmir valley have geared up all resources to meet any challenge following snow on upper reaches and rain in plains, including summer capital, Srinagar since early this morning.
The Srinagar-Leh national highway has been closed for winter months from Sunday, a traffic police official told UNI this morning.
He said all traffic personnel deployed on the highway between Sonamarg and Drass, on other side of the Zojila pass to regulate traffic have been withdrawn, he said. However, he said if any vehicle will ply on the highway he will be doing so on his own risk and responsibility. The official said that traffic police and local administration on both sides of the Zojila had made all efforts to clear vehicles to their respective destinations before closing it officially from yesterday. Actually the highway remained closed between Sonamarg to Meenmarg Drass because of ten to 15 feet of snowfall during winter.
He said there was also a forecast for heavy snow on the highway, connecting Ladakh with Kashmir for next five days from today.
However, he said, traffic from Kargil a border town on the highway to Leh will continue during the winter also subject to weather and road condition. Similarly traffic from Srinagar to Sonamarg will also ply subject to road condition.
Meanwhile, despite rain since last night, the national highway, connecting Kashmir with the rest of the country was through for both way light vehicle traffic. However, light vehicles will continue to ply from one side only to avoid any traffic jam on the highway, where road widening is going on.
Traffic on the Mughal road has been suspended due to fresh snowfall since Sunday night. It was snowing at Harpora Shopian, Pir-ki-Gali and other places on the road. UNI

Launches cleanliness drive at Peer ki Gali

SHOPIAN SEPTEMBER 23:- District Development Commissioner Shopian Mohammad Aijaz Asad today inspected the condition of entire stretch of Mughal Road right from Shopian upto Peer Ki Gali.
During the inspection DDC took a comprehensive on spot review of blacktopping of the road surface, protection works, repairing of potholes at various locations including at crucial spots near Dubjian Bridge and Lal Ghulam Bridge.
          The DDC expressed satisfaction at the level of repair work undertaken on the road stretch during the last three months and said that the condition of Mughal Road has improved significantly resulting in smooth and safe movement of traffic.
         The DDC also launched cleanliness drive at Peer Ki Gali Under “Swachta Hi Seva” today in presence of Executive Engineer of Mughal Road, Executive Engineer R&B, Chief Executive Officer Dubjian-Pir ki Gali Development Authority, Tehsildar Shopian, and concerned District/Sectoral officers including a large number of people.
During the Swachhta drive, Astaan Sharief premises and the  peripheral area near Pir ki Gali were cleaned.
           Speaking on the occasion, the DDC said the main motto of conducting the “Swachta Hi Seva” in the district is to create awareness amongst the masses so that the message of cleanliness can spread to every nook and corner of the district and every person contributes in the noble cause of promoting cleanliness.
 The DDC appealed the visitors to contribute in preserving the Fragile Ecology of Peer ki Gali. On the occasion DDC issued Instructions to CEO Dubjian Pir Ki Gali Development Authority to make a comprehensive plan for beautification of Pir ki Gali including Ziarat Sharief.

          He asked CEO to make a plan for construction of Lavatory Block at Pir Ki Gali for convenience of tourists and passengers. Further, it was impressed upon all to preserve the pristine nature of the tourist spot.

Srinagar, Aug 16 (UNI) The 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu national highway, connecting Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, has been closed due to landslides. However, the historic Mughal road and highway linking Ladakh region with Kashmir were through for traffic, a traffic police official told UNI. He said the Srinagar-Jammu national highway was closed last evening following fresh landslides at several places, including at Rattanbas Banihal. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for the maintenance of the highway, immediately pressed into service sophisticated machines and men to clear the landslides and resume traffic. The road clearance operation was on when the reports last came in, he said, adding that traffic will be resumed only after receiving green signal from the BRO and officials posted at different places on the highway. He said no fresh vehicle was allowed from Srinagar or Jammu. Meanwhile, large number of vehicles, including trucks loaded with essentials for Kashmir valley, are stranded at some places on other side of the Banihal. Fresh traffic will be allowed only after clearing stranded vehicles. For security reasons no security force vehicle was allowed on the highway yesterday. Srinagar, Jul 20 :  One-way heavy vehicular traffic has been allowed on historic Mughal road, linking Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region, after remaining suspended for about eight months. However, one-way light vehicular traffic was allowed on the Mughal road on April 23 after remaining closed for winter months due to accumulation of heavy snow. The road was made operational for two-way traffic for light vehicles from June 8. Traffic is plying normally on Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, connecting Kashmir with the rest of the country, and 434-km-long Leh highway, linking Ladakh with the Valley. ''Heavy Motor Vehicles from Srinagar to Jammu have been allowed to ply on Mughal road since early this morning,'' a traffic police official told UNI. He said all the un-laden empty trucks and fruit laden trucks (six tyre trucks only) except multi axle vehicles can adopt Mughal road from Srinagar to Jammu. ''The movement of HMVs shall continue to be one-way till further orders and movement of these vehicles (HMVs) from Shopian towards Behramgalla shall be allowed on alternate days,'' he said. He said further informed that the movement of these vehicles shall be allowed strictly between 0900 hrs to 1600 hrs only and all the vehicles shall cross Peer Ki Gali before 1700 hrs every day. UNI

          SHOPIAN, JULY 15: District Development Commissioner Shopian, Mohammad Aijaz today inspected ongoing maintenance works especially blacktopping on historical Mughal Road from Shopian to Peer Ki Gali.
          DDC was accompanied by Executive Engineer Mughal Road Division Shopian. He was apprised that required men and machinery has been put in place for blacktopping and slide clearance on Historic Mughal Road.
          DDC directed the concerned officers to cover all the patches upto Peer Ki Gali within a stipulated time to make the road fit for the smooth plying of traffic. He further directed the Executive Engineer Mughal Road to restore the drains wherever they have been breached and also take up the protection works at the earliest.
          The DDC asserted that Historic Mughal Road provides an alternate connectivity for Kashmir valley to the rest of India and has a got tremendous impact on the economy of Kashmir division and in particular to district Shopian.

          It should be noted here that the fruit growers association are pressing for hassle free opening of the Mughal Road as the fruit season is very near and the road provides them extra connectivity in transporting their fruit to rest of the country. The supply of essential commodities especially during summer also gets facilitated through the NH-4A road.

SRINAGAR, JUNE 08: Inspector General of Police (Traffic) Jagjit Kumar today said the Mughal road will be open for two-way traffic from June 09.
          In an official statement issued today, IG Traffic said initially two-way movement on the Mughal road will be allowed for Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs) only from June 09, 2017 for a period of one week.
          Giving details, he said the movement of traffic (LMVs only) from either sides (viz. from Behramgalla and Heerpora sides) shall be allowed strictly between 9:00 am to 4:00 pm only and all the vehicles shall crossPeer Ki Gali before 5:00 pm, every day.

          The IG Traffic said movement of HMVs shall continue to be one-way till further orders and movement of these vehicles (HMVs) from Behramgalla towards Shopian and vice versa shall be allowed on alternate days strictly.

SRINAGAR, MAY 13: According to the Inspector General of Police Traffic J&K, Jagjit Kumar, historic Mughal Road shall open for one-way movement of heavy vehicular traffic with proper traffic regulations in avalanche prone spots from May 14.
          The IGP said that Mughal Road Project Chief Engineer conveyed feasibility of the road for heavy motor vehicles (HMVs).
          He said that to ensure smooth regulation of traffic from Poonch to Shopian and vice versa, only one-way traffic plan has been formulated which will remain in effect till May 31, 2017.
          According to the plan, HMVs (6 tyre trucks only) and light motor vehicles shall move from Poonch in Jammu region to Shopian in Kashmir from May 14 on alternate days only.

          Similarly, traffic from Shopian to Poonch will be allowed from May 15 on alternate days.
